ESD adjudication changed to 'in progress' after 4 weeks - what happens next?
Guys I'm freaking out a little. I've been stuck in adjudication for almost 4 weeks now after getting laid off from my construction job. Today I logged into my eServices account and noticed the status changed from 'adjudication' to 'adjudication in progress'. Does anyone know what this actually means? Is this good news or just another step in the waiting game? My rent is due next week and I've been counting on this money. I've tried calling ESD literally 37 times in the past two weeks and can't get through to a human being. Has anyone else seen this status change before? How much longer am I looking at?

This is actually good news! When your claim moves to 'adjudication in progress' it means an adjudicator has been assigned to your case and is actively working on it. In my experience, this typically means you'll see movement within 3-7 business days. Make sure your phone is on and you're checking your eServices messages daily - they might reach out for additional information.

•OMG thank you! That makes me feel a little better. Do you know if they'll call from a blocked number? I usually don't answer those but I definitely will if it might be ESD.

•Six weeks?! I can't wait that long... did you have to do anything to make it move faster?

I'm sorry you're dealing with this stress. 'Adjudication in progress' means an adjudicator is reviewing your claim to determine if you qualify for benefits. This is different from regular processing - it happens when there's a question about your eligibility. Common reasons include circumstances of job separation (layoff vs. firing), availability for work, or reported earnings. The change in status is positive - it means they're actively working on your case. Are you continuing to file your weekly claims during this time? That's crucial even while waiting for a decision.

•Yes I've been filing every week, even though they all just say "disqualified" until this gets resolved. I was definitely laid off - we had a whole crew reduction and they gave us paperwork and everything. I uploaded the layoff notice to my claim but I guess nobody looked at it yet?

they change the adjudication status all the time and it doesn't mean anything its just to make you think your claim is moving but its just sitting there trust me. ive done this 3 times now and its always the SAME BS!

•That hasn't been my experience. The status changes do mean something, but the system isn't always transparent about what's happening behind the scenes. Status changes definitely indicate movement, even if it's not as fast as we'd like.

After helping dozens of people navigate ESD claims, I can tell you that 'adjudication in progress' means your case has moved from the general queue to active review by an adjudicator. This is a positive step! However, it doesn't guarantee immediate resolution. Because you uploaded documentation of your layoff, that should help expedite things. Make sure you check your Notices/Letters section in eServices daily, as they might post questions there instead of calling you. If you need to speak with someone to check the status, I'd recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They've helped many people on this forum connect with ESD agents quickly instead of waiting on hold for hours. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 that shows how it works. It saved me hours of frustration when I was dealing with a similar adjudication issue last year.

•Thank you - I'll check out that Claimyr thing. At this point I'd do anything to talk to an actual person at ESD. I didn't know about checking the Notices section - I've only been looking at the main dashboard page. I'll start checking that too.

Quick question - have you been doing your required job search activities while waiting? I made the mistake of not doing them during adjudication and it caused even more delays when they finally approved my claim but then had to verify my job search activities retroactively.

•Oh crap, I didn't realize I needed to do those while in adjudication! I thought I only needed to start once they approved me. Do I need to go back and do them now for the past 4 weeks?

•Yes, you definitely need to be doing 3 job search activities each week, even during adjudication. But don't panic - start documenting them now going forward. And if you did apply for any jobs in those past weeks, try to document those retroactively as best you can. They might waive the requirement for the first couple weeks, but it's not guaranteed.

I went thru this exact thing. When it changed to "in progress" it took exactly 8 days until my money hit my account. All back pay came at once!! Hang in there!

•That's really good to hear, thanks for sharing your experience! Did you have to do anything during those 8 days or just wait?

•Just waited and kept filing my weekly claims. One day it all just switched to paid status!

•This is actually good advice. If your adjudication extends beyond 6 weeks, contacting your state representative can help. They have liaisons who work directly with ESD leadership. However, I'd recommend waiting until at least 5-6 weeks have passed since adjudication began before taking this step.

Update: I used that Claimyr service and actually got through to ESD today! The agent told me that my case was flagged because my employer initially contested the layoff (what the heck??) but they just received confirmation from HR that it was indeed a legitimate reduction in force. She said the adjudicator should make a decision within a week. Fingers crossed!! Thanks everyone for your help.

•That's great news! And it explains the delay - employer contests can add weeks to the process. Keep us posted on how it goes!
