Does everyone get unemployment benefits in Washington state - what are the requirements?
I'm really confused about who actually qualifies for unemployment in Washington. My friend got denied and she worked for like 8 months at her last job. I've been working part-time for about 6 months and wondering if I'd even be eligible if I lost my job. Does everyone get unemployment or are there specific requirements? I don't understand how the system works at all.

No, not everyone gets unemployment benefits. You need to meet specific eligibility requirements through Washington ESD. You must have earned enough wages during your base period (usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters), be unemployed through no fault of your own, be able and available for work, and actively seek employment.

•What's a base period? And how much do you need to earn?

Reginald Blackwell
•The base period is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file your claim. You need at least $1,847 in total wages during your base period to qualify.

I got denied last year because I quit my job. They said I wasn't eligible because I left voluntarily. You can't get benefits if you quit unless it's for good cause.

•What counts as good cause? Like if your boss is treating you badly?

•It has to be really serious stuff like unsafe working conditions, harassment, or significant changes to your job that weren't part of your original agreement.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check your eligibility, I used a service called Claimyr that helped me reach an actual agent. They have this system that calls for you and gets you connected. Check out claimyr.com - they even have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that legitimate? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach anyone at Washington ESD.

•Yeah it's real. I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

Your friend might have been denied for other reasons. Even if you work long enough, you can still get disqualified if you were fired for misconduct or if you don't meet the job search requirements.

•How many jobs do you have to apply for each week?
0 coins
Hugh Intensity
•You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log of your activities.

ugh the whole system is so confusing!! why can't they just make it simple

•I know right? It's like they don't want people to get help.

•It's complicated because they have to prevent fraud while helping legitimate claimants. The rules are there for good reasons.

Also remember that being unemployed 'through no fault of your own' doesn't just mean getting laid off. It includes things like reduction in hours, temporary layoffs, or being fired for reasons other than misconduct.

•What if you get fired for being late too many times? Is that misconduct?
0 coins
Reginald Blackwell
•That could be considered misconduct depending on the circumstances and your employer's policies. Each case is evaluated individually during the adjudication process.

I tried to apply once and gave up because the website was so confusing. Maybe I should try again. Do you have to apply online?

Reginald Blackwell
•You can apply online through the Washington ESD website or by phone. Online is usually faster though.

•If you need help navigating the system or talking to someone at Washington ESD, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really helped me get through when I was stuck.

Don't forget about the waiting week. Even if you qualify, you don't get paid for your first week of unemployment.

Statiia Aarssizan
•Wait what? So you just get nothing for the first week?
0 coins
Aria Khan
•Right, it's like a penalty week. You still have to file your weekly claim but you won't receive payment for that first week.

My cousin got denied because she didn't have enough work history. She only worked for like 3 months before getting laid off.

•That makes sense. You need to have worked long enough and earned enough during your base period to establish a claim.

Statiia Aarssizan
•So working 6 months part-time might not be enough?
0 coins
Reginald Blackwell
•It depends on how much you earned. The earnings requirement is more important than just the length of time worked.

Another thing people don't realize is that you have to be able and available for work. If you're sick, injured, or not actively looking for work, you can be disqualified.

•what if you're taking care of kids and can't work full time?

Hugh Intensity
•You can still qualify if you're available for part-time work that's similar to your previous job. But you have to be genuinely available and actively seeking employment.

For anyone dealing with adjudication issues or claim problems, seriously consider using Claimyr. I was stuck for weeks trying to get answers about my claim status and they got me through to an agent in like an hour. Worth checking out their demo video to see how it works.

•How much does it cost?

Everett Tutum
•I'd rather not discuss pricing here but it was definitely worth it for the time and stress it saved me. You can check their site for current rates.

I heard they can also deny you if you're going to school full-time. Is that true?
0 coins
Reginald Blackwell
•Generally yes, full-time students aren't eligible unless they're in approved training programs. You have to be available for work during normal business hours.

Sunny Wang
•That's annoying. What if you're doing online classes?
0 coins
Reginald Blackwell
•Doesn't matter if it's online or in-person. If you're enrolled full-time, it usually disqualifies you because you're not considered available for work.

this whole thread is making me realize how many ways you can get denied lol

•The requirements exist to make sure benefits go to people who are genuinely unemployed and looking for work. It's not meant to be impossible, just properly regulated.

Effie Alexander
•still feels like they're trying to trick people into not getting benefits

To summarize for the original poster: No, not everyone gets unemployment. You need sufficient work history, proper reason for unemployment, and must meet ongoing requirements like job searching. Check Washington ESD's website for the specific wage requirements based on when you'd file your claim.

•Thanks for all the info everyone. Sounds like I should probably check if I'd qualify before I actually need to file.

Reginald Blackwell
•That's smart. You can use the benefit calculator on Washington ESD's website to get an estimate of your potential benefits.

Also remember that even if you qualify initially, you can lose benefits if you don't follow the rules. Missing weekly claims, not doing job searches, or refusing suitable work can all get you disqualified.

Statiia Aarssizan
•What counts as suitable work? Do you have to take any job?
0 coins
Aria Khan
•It has to be similar to your previous work in terms of pay, skills, and commute distance. You don't have to take just anything, but you can't be too picky either.

One last thing - if you do end up needing to contact Washington ESD for any reason and can't get through their regular phone lines, definitely consider that Claimyr service. It's been a game changer for a lot of people dealing with claim issues.

•The demo video really shows how it works if you're curious. It's pretty straightforward.

Bottom line: unemployment isn't automatic. Do your research, make sure you meet the requirements, and follow all the rules if you do qualify. The system works if you understand how to navigate it properly.

still think the system could be way simpler but at least now i know what to expect if i ever need to use it

•The complexity is unfortunate but necessary to prevent fraud and ensure benefits go to those who truly need them.
