Does 401k withdrawal affect Washington ESD unemployment benefits eligibility?
I'm currently receiving unemployment benefits and considering withdrawing from my 401k to help with bills. Will this affect my weekly claim payments from Washington ESD? I'm worried they might reduce or stop my benefits if I report this income. Has anyone dealt with this situation before?

401k withdrawals are generally not considered earned income for unemployment purposes, but you should still report it when filing your weekly claim just to be safe.

•Thanks! Do I report it as other income or just mention it in the remarks section?

•I would put it in the other income section with a note that it's a retirement withdrawal. Better to over-report than under-report.

I withdrew from my 401k last year while on unemployment and it didn't affect my benefits at all. Washington ESD only cares about work income and certain types of pension payments.

•That's reassuring! Did you have any issues when you reported it on your weekly claim?

•Nope, no issues. Just make sure you report it accurately and keep all your documentation.

Be careful though - if you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD to verify this, I found claimyr.com really helpful for getting through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Thanks for the tip! I've been trying to call for days but keep getting the busy signal.

•What exactly does this service do? Is it legitimate?

•It's legit - they basically call the Washington ESD phone lines for you and connect you when they get through. Beats sitting on hold for hours.

The key thing is that 401k withdrawals are NOT wages or earnings from work. Washington ESD is looking for income that would indicate you're working, not retirement fund access.

•What about the taxes though? Won't that show up as income on next year's tax return?

Chloe Robinson
•Yes it will be taxable income for the IRS, but that's different from Washington ESD's definition of reportable income for weekly claims.

I'm in the same boat - thinking about early withdrawal but worried about penalties AND how it might affect my claim.

Isabella Oliveira
•The penalties are rough but might be worth it if you really need the money. At least it won't mess up our unemployment.

•Yeah the 10% penalty plus taxes is painful but better than falling behind on rent.

Just make sure you understand the difference between a withdrawal and a loan from your 401k. Loans don't count as income at all.

•My plan doesn't allow loans unfortunately, only hardship withdrawals.

•Same here - my employer's plan is pretty restrictive about loans.

If you need to confirm this with Washington ESD directly, definitely try that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier. I was stuck in adjudication for weeks and couldn't get through until I used them.

•How much does it cost to use?

•I don't remember the exact amount but it was worth it to finally talk to someone. Check their website for current pricing.

Washington ESD's handbook specifically mentions that retirement distributions are not deductible from benefits. You're good to go as long as you report it properly.

Isabella Oliveira
•Where can I find that handbook? I'd like to read it myself.

•It's on the Washington ESD website under claimant resources. Look for the unemployment insurance handbook.

Been there done that - withdrew $8000 from my 401k while collecting UI and had zero problems. Just be honest on your weekly claim.

Isabella Oliveira
•Did you put it under 'other income' or somewhere else on the form?
0 coins
Zara Mirza
•I put it under other income with a note explaining it was a retirement withdrawal.

•Smart move - always better to over-disclose than have them find out later.

Wait, I thought ANY income had to be reported and could reduce your benefits?
0 coins
Chloe Robinson
•Not all income - only earned income from work. Things like retirement withdrawals, tax refunds, gifts, etc. don't count against your benefits.

•Oh wow, I've been stressing about this for nothing then!

The confusion comes from people mixing up 'income' and 'wages.' Washington ESD cares about wages and work-related earnings, not all forms of income.

Mateo Sanchez
•Exactly - I made this mistake early on and reported everything including birthday money from my mom lol

Nia Wilson
•Haha yeah they don't care about birthday money! Just employment-related stuff.

If you're really unsure, that claimyr service mentioned earlier might be worth it. I used it last month when I had questions about pension payments.

•How quickly were you able to get through to someone?

•They called me back within a few hours and had me connected to Washington ESD within minutes after that.

I withdrew from my Roth IRA (different than 401k but similar concept) and Washington ESD didn't care at all. Still got my full weekly benefit amount.

Isabella Oliveira
•Good to know! I was wondering about IRAs too since I have both.

•Roth withdrawals are even cleaner since you already paid taxes on that money.

The Washington ESD website has a whole section about what counts as reportable income. 401k withdrawals are specifically listed as NOT affecting benefits.

Isabella Oliveira
•Perfect! I'll look that up to put my mind at ease.

•Yeah it's pretty clear once you read their actual guidance instead of just guessing.

Just went through this exact situation 2 months ago. Zero impact on my weekly claims. You're overthinking it!

One more vote for it being fine - I've done both 401k withdrawal and Roth conversion while on unemployment with no issues.

Isabella Oliveira
•Roth conversion too? That's good to know for future planning.
0 coins
Zoe Stavros
•Yep, conversions are just moving money between retirement accounts, not earning new income.

Final thought - if you need to discuss your specific situation with Washington ESD, definitely consider using claimyr.com. Their system makes it so much easier to actually reach an agent instead of getting hung up on constantly.

Summary for anyone else finding this thread: 401k withdrawals don't affect Washington ESD benefits, just report them accurately on your weekly claim and keep documentation.

This is such valuable information! I'm in a similar situation and was really stressed about whether a 401k withdrawal would mess up my unemployment benefits. Reading everyone's experiences has been incredibly reassuring. It sounds like the key is just being transparent when reporting it on the weekly claim form. Thanks to everyone who shared their stories - this community really does help navigate these confusing situations!
