Do they tax unemployment benefits in Washington ESD - confused about tax implications

I just started receiving my Washington ESD unemployment benefits last month and I'm really confused about the tax situation. Do they automatically take taxes out or do I need to handle this myself? I don't want to get hit with a huge tax bill next year when I file my return. My friend said something about withholding but I'm not sure if that's optional or required. Has anyone dealt with this before?

Yes, unemployment benefits are taxable income at the federal level. Washington ESD gives you the option to have federal taxes withheld from your weekly payments, but it's not automatic. You need to request it when you file your initial claim or you can add it later through your online account.

So it's optional? What percentage do they usually take out if I choose withholding?

Felicity Bud

•

It's 10% for federal withholding. You can request this when you're filing your weekly claims or update your account settings.

I learned this the hard way last year - didn't have any taxes withheld and owed like $800 when I filed my taxes. Definitely recommend having them take it out automatically.

0 coins

Ouch, that's a painful lesson. Did you have to pay penalties too?

Max Reyes

•

Fortunately no penalties since I paid it all when I filed, but it was a shock I wasn't prepared for.

Just to be clear - Washington state has no state income tax, so you only need to worry about federal taxes on your unemployment benefits. The 10% withholding usually covers most people's federal tax liability, but it depends on your total income for the year.

That's good to know about no state taxes. So if I'm only working part-time plus unemployment, the 10% should be enough?

For most people yes, but everyone's situation is different. You might want to talk to a tax preparer if you're unsure.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD to set up tax withholding, I had success using Claimyr.com to get through to an actual agent. They have a callback service that saved me hours of trying to call. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Really? I've been trying to call for days to update my withholding status. How does that service work exactly?

0 coins

You basically schedule a callback and they handle getting you connected to Washington ESD. Way better than sitting on hold for hours or getting disconnected.

I'm skeptical of these third-party services. Isn't it better to just keep trying to call directly?

I thought the same thing until I wasted three full days trying to get through. Sometimes you just need to talk to someone and this actually worked.

wait so if I already got like 6 weeks of payments without withholding can I still change it now?? I'm worried I'm screwed for taxes

•

Yes, you can change your withholding election at any time. Just log into your Washington ESD account and update your tax withholding preferences. It will apply to future payments.

thank god. I was freaking out thinking I messed up permanently

The whole tax thing with unemployment is so confusing. I wish they just made it clearer when you first apply. I almost missed the withholding option completely.

Agreed! They should make it more prominent in the application process instead of burying it in the settings.

I think they mention it briefly when you file but there's so much information to process during that initial claim that it's easy to miss.

For anyone wondering about the 1099-G form - Washington ESD will send you one in January showing how much you received in benefits and how much was withheld for taxes (if any). You'll need this to file your tax return.

Do they mail it or is it electronic? I moved recently and haven't updated my address yet.

They usually mail it, but you should be able to access it online through your Washington ESD account too. Definitely update your address though!

I've been on unemployment for 4 months now and had 10% withheld the whole time. My tax guy said I'll probably get a small refund this year because of the withholding. Much better than owing money!

That's smart planning. Better to have a little extra withheld than scramble to pay taxes later.

0 coins

Exactly. I learned my lesson from a previous year when I didn't have enough withheld from my regular job.

This is probably a dumb question but do you get taxed on the waiting week too? I know Washington ESD doesn't pay for the first week but I'm not sure about the tax implications.

Adrian Connor

•

You only get taxed on benefits you actually receive. Since Washington has a non-payable waiting week, there's nothing to tax for that first week.

Makes sense, thanks for clarifying that!

PRO TIP: If you're also working part-time while on unemployment, make sure your employer is withholding enough from your paychecks too. The combination of part-time work + unemployment benefits can push you into a higher tax bracket.

Good point! I'm working 20 hours a week plus getting partial unemployment. Should I increase my withholding at work?

It wouldn't hurt to have a little extra withheld, especially if you're close to the next tax bracket. Better safe than sorry.

Can confirm that Claimyr thing works for tax questions too. I used it last week to ask about changing my withholding and got through to someone right away. Much easier than the phone maze.

How much does it cost? I'm on unemployment so money's tight.

Derek Olson

•

I don't remember the exact cost but it was worth it to actually talk to someone instead of wasting whole days calling. Check their website for current pricing.

I used it too and found the cost reasonable considering how much time it saved me. Plus you can resolve multiple issues in one call.

Just wanted to add that if you received unemployment last year and forgot to report it on your taxes, you should file an amended return. The IRS will eventually catch it anyway and you'll owe penalties.

Niko Ramsey

•

How long do you have to file an amended return? Asking for a friend who may have forgotten to include their 1099-G...

0 coins

Anna Kerber

•

You have three years from the original due date to file an amendment. But don't wait - the sooner the better!

The tax withholding saved my butt this year. Got a small refund instead of owing money. If you're on the fence about it, just do it. The peace of mind is worth it.

You've all convinced me. I'm going to set up withholding tomorrow. Thanks everyone for the advice!
