Denied standby status for ESD unemployment - confused about earlier weeks and new job starting
So I'm really confused about this whole standby situation with ESD. My employer temporarily laid me off and I applied for standby status from 1/29 to 2/24, but I just got notification that I was DENIED standby?? Does this mean I have to do the job search activities retroactively for those weeks? And what about my claim weeks before 1/29 - do I need to do anything different with those? To make things more complicated, I just got hired at a new company and should be starting next week. Do I need to report this on my weekly claim? Will I still get benefits for this final week before I start? The ESD website is so confusing and I can't figure out if I'm doing this right. Has anyone dealt with a standby denial when you're about to start a new job anyway?

Yes, unfortunately a standby denial means you'll need to provide job search activities for those weeks (1/29-2/24). ESD requires 3 job search activities for each week you claimed benefits. For weeks before 1/29, nothing changes - whatever status you had for those weeks remains the same. You absolutely need to report your new job on your weekly claim. When you file your weekly claim, there will be questions about whether you've accepted new work and when you start. Be honest about this. You can still receive benefits for your final week of unemployment if you didn't work or get paid during that week, but you must report the job acceptance.

•Thanks for explaining! So I have to go back and enter job search activities for almost a month of claims? Is there a deadline for this? I'm panicking a bit because I didn't keep track of any job search stuff since I thought I was on standby!

•While it's true that not all job search activities are verified, I strongly recommend being truthful. ESD can conduct random audits, and providing false information can result in having to pay back benefits plus penalties. It's better to contact ESD directly and explain the situation rather than entering fictitious job search activities.

THE ENTIRE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MAKE YOU FAIL!!!! I went through this EXACT same thing in December. They DENIED my standby after THREE WEEKS of waiting then demanded all my job searches retroactively! When I called to explain I couldn't possibly remember all the places I'd applied they basically told me TOO BAD! Then they put me in adjudication for "failure to provide job search details" and I STILL HAVEN'T SEEN A PENNY OF MY BENEFITS!!!! 🤬🤬🤬

•I'm sorry you went through that. But I found a way to actually get through to an ESD agent who helped resolve my standby issue. I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that gets you through the phone queue. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Honestly would've been stuck in adjudication forever without getting an actual person to look at my claim. The agent told me exactly what job search stuff I needed to add and fixed my claim status the same day.

•Did you end up getting paid for the weeks you were waiting for the standby approval? That's what I'm most worried about - missing out on like 4 weeks of benefits when I really needed them!

When I had a standby denial last fall, I talked to someone at WorkSource who helped me backdate some job search activities. They were super helpful in showing me how to document networking events, online job search workshops, and resume updates as qualifying activities. You don't need just applications - things like creating accounts on job sites and attending virtual job fairs count too!

•wait srsly? i thought only actual job applications counted. so watching youtube videos about job hunting would work too?

Let me clarify some points about standby status and job search requirements: 1. For the weeks you were denied standby (1/29-2/24), you have 30 days from the denial notification to enter your job search activities or request a good cause waiver if you have a legitimate reason for not completing them. 2. For weeks before 1/29, you must maintain whatever requirements were in place for that period. 3. Regarding your new job: Yes, you must report when you accept a job offer and the start date. You can still receive benefits for weeks you remain unemployed before your start date, provided you meet all other eligibility requirements. 4. Valid job search activities include: job applications, interviews, creating profiles on job search websites, attending job fairs (virtual counts), resume workshops, and networking events. 5. Document everything carefully - date, employer/organization name, contact information, and activity description. I recommend calling ESD directly to explain your situation with the standby denial and upcoming employment. They can provide guidance specific to your claim.

•Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! I feel much better knowing I have 30 days to get this sorted out. I'll call ESD tomorrow and see if they can help me figure out what I need to do exactly. Really appreciate everyone's help!

When I had trouble reaching someone at ESD about my standby status, I tried for DAYS with no luck. Then I found out about Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me through to an actual ESD agent in about 20 minutes. They have this demo video: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 showing how it works. The agent I spoke with helped me add job search activities retroactively and explained exactly what I needed to do. Definitely worth it instead of stressing for weeks.

•Do they actually get you through to a REAL PERSON? Because I've called that ESD number like 50 TIMES and either get disconnected or wait 3+ hours only to get hung up on!!

Update: I finally got through to someone at ESD this morning! They explained that I need to go back and add job search activities for the weeks I was denied standby, but they're giving me until the end of the month to complete them all. They also confirmed I'll still get benefits for this final week before my job starts as long as I report the job acceptance and start date correctly. Thanks everyone for your help - this was so stressful!

•That's great news! Make sure to keep documentation of any job search activities you add just in case they audit your claim later.
