ESD standby status ended 6th - Do I need job searches this week or next?
I've been on standby status with ESD for the past 8 weeks due to a temporary layoff at my construction company. My standby period officially ended on June 6th (yesterday). I'm confused about when I need to start doing my job search activities. For my weekly claim tomorrow, do I need to have already completed 3 job search activities for this week? Or can I start doing job searches next week and report those on the following claim? I don't want to get disqualified for benefits just because I misunderstood the timing. I tried calling ESD but couldn't get through to anyone. Help!

i think ur supposed to start job searching immediately when standby ends. thats what happened 2 me last yr. didn't do searches right away and my payment got held up for like 3 weeks

•Oh no, that's what I was afraid of! So I'm already too late since my standby ended yesterday? Will they deny my benefits for this week?

The requirement is that you need to complete job search activities during the week you're claiming benefits for. Since your standby ended on the 6th, you technically should have completed job search activities this week to report on tomorrow's claim. However, there's a bit of wiggle room in the first week of transition. When you file your weekly claim, you'll be asked if you completed job search activities. If you answer "no," your benefits might be held temporarily, but you can call ESD to explain the situation - many agents understand the confusion around standby transitions and may be able to help. Make sure you start your job search activities immediately and document everything thoroughly for next week.

•This is right - my wife went through exactly this last month. She was super stressed about it too! They did hold her payment for answering no to job searches but when she got through to ESD they approved her payment as a one-time exception. Just make SURE you do the 3 activities every week from now on!

I had the EXACT same problem in April when my standby ended!!! ESD's system is SO FRUSTRATING! I spent 4 DAYS trying to get through to someone on the phone. Kept getting busy signals or disconnected after waiting for 2+ hours!! Finally found Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got a callback from ESD within 30 minutes. The agent told me they often give a one-week grace period when transitioning from standby to regular UI, but you HAVE to call and explain. Check out their video if you want to see how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Totally worth it for the stress relief alone.

•Does that service actually work? I'm always skeptical of these things that claim to get you through to ESD faster. Has anyone else tried it?

•Yes, it works. I used it back in January when my claim got stuck in adjudication. It's not free but when you're desperate to reach ESD and your benefits are on the line, it's worth considering. Just make sure you have all your claim info ready when they call you back.

To be technically correct about the ESD requirements: Once standby status ends, you immediately return to regular UI requirements which include completing 3 job search activities each week. The specific rule is that you need to have completed these activities during the week you're claiming for. That said, there are two important details to understand: 1. The "week" for ESD runs Sunday-Saturday. If your standby ended on the 6th, you would technically need to complete job search activities between the 6th and Saturday. 2. There is often a one-time exception available for claimants transitioning from standby to regular UI who weren't aware of the immediate job search requirement. This isn't guaranteed, but many adjudicators will allow it if you call and explain. I recommend being honest on your weekly claim (don't falsely report job searches you didn't do), then immediately call ESD to explain your situation. And of course, start your job search activities right away for next week.

•This isn't completely accurate. I worked for ESD until 2025 and the policy on standby transitions can vary. Sometimes the system automatically gives a one-week transition period, other times it doesn't. It depends on how the claim was originally coded and whether the standby was employer-requested or individual.

My standby ended in March and I was in the same boat. Here's what I learned: 1. Technically yes, you're supposed to start job searching immediately when standby ends 2. ESD usually gives a one-week grace period for this transition but it's NOT automatic 3. You should answer the weekly claim questions honestly (so say "no" to job searches if you didn't do them) 4. Call ESD ASAP to explain the situation In my case, they approved my payment after I called, but I had to do the full 3 job searches every week after that. Just make sure you document everything - date, company name, position, how you applied, contact info. ESD can audit your job search logs at any time.

•This is super helpful, thank you! I'll definitely be honest on my claim and call them right away. I'm going to start applying for jobs today just to get a head start on next week's requirements too.

•That's a great point! Yes, when transitioning from standby to regular UI, you typically need to register with WorkSource and complete the orientation/workshop. This requirement is separate from your weekly job search activities, but equally important for maintaining eligibility.
