Do I need to reapply for ESD benefits after standby period ends or just start job search activities?
My standby status is ending next week after my employer extended it twice (manufacturing industry). I understand I need to start doing the 3 job search activities each week, but I'm confused about whether I need to completely reapply for unemployment benefits or if I just continue filing my weekly claims while adding the job search information. The ESD website is confusing me and the automated phone system just keeps disconnecting me. Has anyone transitioned from standby to regular unemployment recently? What exactly do I need to do to keep receiving benefits without interruption?

•Thanks! So I don't need to submit any special forms or reapply? Just add the job search information to my existing weekly claim?

I went through this exact situation in January! No need to reapply - your claim stays active. You just start reporting your job search activities when you file your weekly claim. There's a section specifically for entering those details. Make sure you're keeping track of where you applied, contact information, application method, etc. They can audit your job search log at any time.

•That's a huge relief! Thanks for the detailed explanation. Do you know if I need to call them to let them know my standby is ending or is that automatic in the system?

When your standby period ends, the system automatically transitions your claim to regular unemployment status where job search is required. You don't need to reapply, but here are some important things to know: 1. You MUST do at least 3 job search activities each week 2. Document everything in your job search log (employer name, date, contact info, position, how you applied) 3. Keep your job search records for at least 3 years (ESD can audit up to 3 years back) 4. You can use WorkSource workshops as job search activities 5. If you miss reporting job search for even one week, your benefits could be denied The transition should be smooth if you just start reporting job search activities on your very next weekly claim after standby ends.

•Thank you for such a thorough breakdown! This helps a lot. I'll make sure to have my job search documentation ready to go for next week.

My standby ended last month and I accidentally reapplied for a whole new claim which COMPLETELY messed everything up!! Don't do what I did! It took 5 weeks to sort out and I missed payments. Just continue your regular weekly claims and add the job search info.

While everyone is correct that you don't need to reapply, just be aware that job search requirements are strictly enforced now. In 2025, ESD is doing more random audits than ever before. Make sure you're actually doing the activities you report - don't just make them up! I've heard of people getting hit with overpayment notices for thousands of dollars when they couldn't verify their job searches during an audit.

•THIS!!! I got audited in February and had to pay back $4,250 because I couldn't provide proof of 2 job searches from December. The system is rigged against us! They wait until you've been paid then demand it all back if you miss one tiny detail. So frustrating!!!

I've been trying to reach someone at ESD about my own standby situation for 3 weeks now - impossible to get through on the phone lines! Have you tried using Claimyr? I found it on claimyr.com and it helped me get through to an actual ESD agent in about 30 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Saved me so much frustration after spending days trying to get through on my own.

•I hadn't heard of this service before. I'll keep it in mind if I run into issues with the transition. Right now I'm hoping everything goes smoothly with just continuing my claims and adding job search info.

By the way, when you start entering job search activities, the ESD website can be really glitchy. Sometimes it will time out or lose your information if you take too long. I recommend writing down all your job search details before you start your weekly claim, so you can enter everything quickly without the system timing out.

One more thing - remember that job search activities don't just mean applying for jobs. You can also count: 1. Attending WorkSource workshops (virtual or in-person) 2. Meeting with a career counselor 3. Posting your resume on job boards 4. Creating profiles on employer websites 5. Attending job fairs Makes it easier to get your 3 activities each week if you expand beyond just applications.

•That's really helpful information! I'll definitely look into the WorkSource workshops especially. Are there any you recommend that are particularly useful?
