Contacted governor's office about stuck ESD adjudication - what happens next?

I finally broke down and contacted the governor's office yesterday about my ESD claim that's been stuck in adjudication for 7 weeks now. I'm completely out of savings and my credit cards are maxed. I'm 58 years old and have been applying like crazy but keep running into what feels like age discrimination (or as I call them, 'ghost jobs' where they post but never seem to hire anyone). At this point, I can't even afford my medications. Has anyone had experience escalating through the governor's office? Do they actually help speed things up or am I just wasting my time? I'm so stressed I can barely sleep and don't know what else to do while waiting for ESD to make a decision on my claim.

Yes! The governor's office actually helped me get unstuck after 5 weeks in adjudication hell. They assigned my case to someone who called me within 3 business days. Had my benefits approved 2 days after that call. Make sure you gave them your full claim ID # and contact info or they might not be able to help efficiently.

Oh thank god someone had a good experience! I did give them all my info including my claim ID. Did they contact you by phone or email first? I'm checking both obsessively.

They never helped me ONE BIT!! Just got a generic email saying they'd "forward my concerns" to ESD. Then nothing for another MONTH!!! The whole system is DESIGNED to make you give up!!!!

Same experience here. Got the standard "we'll forward your concerns" email and then radio silence. Eventually my claim was approved but I don't think the governor's office had anything to do with it. Their office is overwhelmed with these requests so don't pin all your hopes on this working.

I had success with the governor's office, but it still took about 10 days to see movement. What really works is getting through to an actual ESD agent who can check your file and potentially escalate internally. After weeks of trying, I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected to an agent without the endless busy signals. There's a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. The agent I reached was able to look at my adjudication and push it to a supervisor for immediate review.

I hadn't heard of this service before. I'll check out the video. At this point I'm willing to try anything that might help. Did they explain why your claim was stuck when you finally reached someone?

The key with adjudication escalations is persistence and documentation. Three approaches that can work simultaneously: 1. Governor's office - response time varies from 3-20 business days 2. State representatives - sometimes faster than governor's office 3. ESD escalation form (found in your eServices account under "more services") While waiting, make sure to continue filing your weekly claims without interruption. Missing even one week can create additional delays. Also, check your ESD Secure Message Center daily as many adjudicators will send information requests there without any email notification. For your specific situation with the 'ghost jobs' issue, be sure to document all your job search activities thoroughly in case there's ever a question about your work search requirements. At 7 weeks in adjudication, your claim likely has an identity or employer response issue that needs resolution.

Thank you for the detailed response. I had no idea about the escalation form in eServices! Just checked and found it. I've been keeping meticulous records of all my job applications with screenshots since I've applied to over 60 positions in the last 6 weeks with only 2 interviews. Will definitely check the message center more regularly.

I'm going through the EXACT same thing right now!! 62 yrs old and nobody wants to hire me even though I have 30+ yrs experience. Been in adjudication for 9 weeks now! I contacted the governor last week but haven't heard anything yet. Did you get an auto-reply email from them at least?

Yes, I got an auto-reply saying they received my message and would review it. That was it so far. It's so frustrating being our age in this job market - I have 25+ years experience but suddenly I'm "not a culture fit" whatever that means. I'll update here if I hear anything from the governor's office.

When I contacted the governor's office about my claim last year, they actually assigned someone to my case who called me directly. But what really broke things loose was when I mentioned that I was considering hiring an attorney for wrongful delay of benefits. My claim was magically fixed within 48 hours after that call. Not saying that's what you should do, just sharing my experience.

Update for the OP: The governor's office usually contacts you by email first, then you might get a phone call from ESD within a few days after that. The email will probably come from a wa.gov address that might look like spam, so check your spam folder too!

Thanks for the update! I'll keep an eye on my spam folder too. Really hoping to hear something by the end of this week.

I work with older job seekers and want to mention that while you're waiting for ESD resolution, you might want to connect with your local WorkSource office. They have specific programs for job seekers 55+ that can help with the "ghost job" situation you're experiencing. They offer free workshops on addressing age bias in interviews and can sometimes match you directly with employers who specifically value experienced workers. Additionally, the WorkSource case managers can sometimes help expedite ESD issues.

That's really helpful information. I didn't know WorkSource had specific programs for older workers. I'll look into that tomorrow. At this point I need all the help I can get both with my claim and finding sustainable employment.

dont forget to check your ESD account for any hidden "alert" messages. Sometimes they say theres a problem but DONT EVEN TELL YOU. I was stuck for 2 months before finding out they needed a document and never bothered to tell me!!! Check the NOTICES section.

Good point, I just checked all tabs in my account and don't see any notices or alerts requiring action. Everything says it's in adjudication with no explanation why. So frustrating!
