Confused about 'missing employment information' upload section on ESD portal - what documents do they need?
I'm completely stuck on my unemployment claim because of this 'missing employment information' section on the upload tab. Been going back and forth with ESD for almost 3 weeks now and they keep saying my claim needs additional documentation, but nowhere does it specify WHAT I'm supposed to upload! I worked at a construction company for 2 years before getting laid off last month, and I've already submitted my final paystub when I first applied. Do I need to upload W2s? Tax returns? Some special form I don't know about? The alert just says 'missing employment information' with no details. Has anyone dealt with this before and actually figured out what they're looking for? I'm getting desperate as rent is due next week and I still haven't received a single payment.

This happens a lot! ESD typically wants your last paystub AND either W2s or your past quarterly earnings statements. If you worked for a construction company, they might also be verifying if you're a seasonal worker (which affects your claim). Upload both your W2 from last year and at least 2-3 recent paystubs showing consistent employment before layoff. ESD's system is frustratingly vague, but providing more documentation than necessary is better than not enough.

•Thanks for the info! I'll definitely upload those documents tonight. One more question - should I also include my layoff notice or anything from my employer confirming the separation? The construction company gave me a letter when they let me go.

•This sounds exactly like what happened to me, except it took me over TWO MONTHS to get my claim approved because I couldn't get anyone on the phone! ESD really needs to be more specific about what documents they need. The whole system is designed to make people give up.

If you've been trying to get through to ESD for 3 weeks with no luck, you might want to try Claimyr. I was in a similar situation last month - couldn't get anyone on the phone for weeks, claim stuck in limbo. Their service connected me to an ESD agent in about 25 minutes after I'd spent days trying on my own. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 and their website is claimyr.com. The agent I talked to immediately told me exactly which documents to upload and got my claim moving again.

•I've never heard of this service before. Does it actually work? I'm willing to try anything at this point because I've literally been calling every single day with no luck.

•Yeah, it definitely worked for me. They basically navigate the phone system and wait on hold so you don't have to. When they get an agent, they call you and connect you. I was skeptical too but was desperate after weeks of trying to get through on my own.

ESD employee here - I can clarify what's needed for the "missing employment information" alert. You need to provide documentation that verifies your employment and wages during your base year (typically the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before filing). For construction workers specifically, we need: 1. W2s from your base year 2. At least 3-4 paystubs showing regular employment 3. Separation letter/layoff notice Upload all three document types clearly labeled in separate files. Many construction claims require additional verification because of seasonal work patterns and potential overlap with self-employment.

•Thank you SO much for this specific information! This is way clearer than anything I've been able to get from the website or automated messages. I'll upload all three types of documents tonight.

•Is this the same for all industries or just construction? I worked in retail and got the same alert but don't have a formal separation letter since I was fired on the spot when they downsized the store staff.

•For retail workers without a formal separation letter, you can submit a detailed written statement explaining the circumstances of your separation - date, reason given, manager's name who terminated you, etc. We just need documentation of why employment ended. The W2s and paystubs requirement is the same across industries.

I'm actually dealing with the EXACT same problem right now except I've been waiting for 6 weeks!!!! This system is a JOKE and they make it impossible on purpose so people just give up. I uploaded 20+ documents already and they STILL say they need more info but won't tell me what. I'm about to lose my apartment because of this garbage system.

•Have you tried contacting your state representative? They can sometimes help move ESD claims along when they're stuck. Just google "[your district] state representative" and most have a constituent services contact form specifically for helping with unemployment issues.

For what it's worth, when I had this issue last month, I tried uploading one document at a time and checking back the next day to see if the alert was gone. That way I could figure out exactly what they wanted. Turns out for me it was specifically my final paystub that resolved it, even though I'd already uploaded tax forms and W2s. Their system is frustrating but sometimes this approach helps narrow down what they're actually looking for.

•That's a really smart approach! I might try that if uploading everything at once doesn't work. It's so frustrating how unclear they make everything.

Did you check your messages in the ESD portal? Sometimes they send specific document requests there but the notification doesn't show up properly. Also, did you work for multiple employers during your base year? That often triggers the missing employment info alert because they need to verify all sources of income.

•I've checked messages and there's nothing specific there. Just generic updates about my claim status being pending. I did have a brief 3-week job at another construction site early last year before going back to my main employer. Maybe that's causing the confusion? Should I upload documentation from both jobs?

•Yes! That's almost certainly the issue. You need to document ALL employment during the base year, even short-term jobs. Upload documentation from both employers and label them clearly. The 3-week job is probably what's hanging things up.

I went through this same nightmare last year! The key is uploading documentation for ALL employment during your base year period. Since you mentioned having that 3-week job at another construction site, that's definitely what's triggering the alert. ESD needs to verify every single employer, even short-term ones. I'd suggest uploading: 1) W2s from both construction companies, 2) paystubs from your main employer showing consistent work, 3) whatever documentation you have from the 3-week job (even just a paystub or two), and 4) your layoff letter. Label each file clearly with the employer name and document type. Once I provided documentation for a brief temp job I'd almost forgotten about, my claim got approved within days. The system is definitely frustrating but hang in there!

•This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I was definitely not thinking about that 3-week job as being significant, but it makes total sense that ESD would need documentation for ALL employment. I'm going to gather everything tonight - W2s from both companies, paystubs from my main job, whatever I can find from the short-term job, and my layoff notice. Really appreciate you breaking it down so clearly with the specific labeling advice too. Fingers crossed this finally gets my claim moving!

Just wanted to follow up and say THANK YOU to everyone who helped, especially @Evelyn Martinez for the specific breakdown and @Freya Nielsen for connecting the dots about my short-term job! I uploaded documentation from both construction companies last night - W2s, paystubs from my main employer, the few paystubs I still had from that 3-week job, and my layoff letter, all clearly labeled. Woke up this morning and the "missing employment information" alert is GONE! My claim status changed to "processing" and I actually got a timeline estimate of 3-5 business days. After almost a month of stress, I can't believe it was that simple once I knew what they actually needed. This community is a lifesaver - the ESD website and phone system are absolutely useless but you all provided clearer guidance than I ever got from official sources. Hopefully this thread helps other people in the same boat!
