ESD asking for previous claim info - will my payments stop?
Just got a notification from ESD asking me to submit information about my previous unemployment claim from last year. I'm currently receiving benefits on a new claim (about $627/week) and I'm worried they'll stop my payments while they review this. The message says 'additional information required to verify eligibility' but doesn't explain what exactly they need or why. Has anyone dealt with this? Will they suspend my payments during this process? I really can't afford any payment gaps right now with rent due next week. Not sure if I should call them or just upload whatever documents I can find from my previous claim.

This happened to me in January. They're probably doing a routine cross-check of your claims history. As long as you respond quickly (within 5 days), your payments should continue without interruption. Make sure you upload any documents they specifically asked for - usually past separation notices, earnings statements from the base year of your previous claim, or any determination letters you received.

•Thanks for the quick response! They didn't specify exactly what documents they want, just said 'information from previous claim.' Should I just upload everything I have? I'm worried I'll miss something important.

•Oh no, 2 months?? That's exactly what I'm afraid of. Did they tell you why it took so long to review your documents?

I work with ESD claims frequently. Here's what you need to know: 1. This is typically a verification process to check for overlapping benefit periods or to confirm your work history doesn't contradict previous claims. 2. Your payments SHOULD continue while they review, but only if you respond promptly and completely. 3. The most important documents to include are: - Separation notices from employers in both claim periods - Any W-2s or paystubs showing your work between claims - Any previous determination letters from ESD - Your work search logs (if they suspect job search issues) 4. Call ESD directly to ask specifically what they're looking for - this saves time and prevents delays.

•This is super helpful, thank you! I've been trying to call but can't get through. Been on hold for over an hour twice today.

If you can't reach ESD by phone (and who can these days?), try using Claimyr. I was in your exact situation last month and was getting desperate after days of trying. Their service connected me to an actual ESD agent in about 30 minutes. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The agent I spoke with told me exactly which documents they needed for my previous claim verification, and my payments never stopped because I got everything submitted on time.

•I've never heard of this service! Might have to try it if I can't get through tomorrow. Did they explain what they were specifically looking for in your case?

•Yes! In my case, they were specifically checking if I had reported all work between my claims correctly. The agent told me exactly which dates they were concerned about and what documents would resolve it. Saved me from just uploading random stuff that might not have addressed their actual concern.

the esd system is DESIGNED to catch ppl in technicalities!!! they WANT u to miss deadlines so they can deny ur benefits and save $$$. happened to my cousin who missed uploading ONE document and they cut him off for 6 weeks!!! the whole system is rigged!!!!

•While I understand your frustration, this isn't entirely accurate. ESD does have verification requirements, but the system isn't designed to trick people. They're required by law to verify eligibility and prevent fraud. Your cousin's situation sounds unusual - most document issues get resolved much faster if you stay in communication with them.

i had this happen last year too. they were checking if i had reported some gig work correctly between claims. i just uploaded my 1099s from that period and a statement explaining the dates i worked. no interruption to my payments at all!

MAKE SURE YOU LABEL YOUR DOCUMENTS CLEARLY when you upload them!! My girlfriend had to resubmit everything because she just uploaded a bunch of files with the default scanner names like "scan001.pdf" and they couldn't tell what was what. Use descriptive names like "W2_2024.pdf" or "SeparationNotice_CompanyName.pdf" to make it super clear what each document is.

•That's a great tip! I wouldn't have thought of that but it makes total sense. Going to rename everything before uploading.

•Yes! I finally got through to ESD yesterday. Turns out they just needed to verify there was no overlap between my previous claim and some part-time work I did last fall. I uploaded my paystubs from that job showing the exact dates, and they told me my payments won't be interrupted while they review. What a relief!

Glad to hear you got it sorted out! For anyone else dealing with this - the key is really just being proactive and responsive. I went through something similar a few months ago and the anxiety was terrible, but once I understood what they actually needed it was much simpler than I thought. The ESD staff are generally helpful once you can reach them, they just have to follow their verification procedures. Don't panic if you get one of these requests - just gather your documents and respond quickly!

•This is such good advice! I'm new to this community and dealing with unemployment stuff for the first time. Reading through this whole thread has been so helpful - it's reassuring to see that these verification requests are pretty routine and that people do get through them successfully. I'm going to save some of the tips mentioned here (like labeling documents clearly) just in case I run into something similar. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences!
