Confused about ESD benefits calculation - where to find my full payment amount?

I've been on unemployment for about 3 weeks now after being laid off from my accounting job. I'm really confused about how to find my full weekly benefit payment amount on the ESD website. I get the direct deposits, but I want to make sure I'm actually receiving the correct amount. I see a 'weekly benefit amount' of $902 on my claim summary page, but then there's also something about a maximum benefit payable? Is that the total I can receive over the whole claim year? The ESD notices are so confusing! Can someone explain where I can find my full payment details and what all these different amounts actually mean?

The weekly benefit amount ($902 in your case) is what you receive each week if you qualify for your full amount. The maximum benefit payable is the total you can receive for your entire claim year - typically 26 weeks worth of benefits, though it can be less depending on your work history. So if your weekly amount is $902, your maximum would be around $23,452. You can find a detailed breakdown by clicking on the 'View payment history' link on your eServices dashboard, which shows any deductions for taxes or other withholdings.

Thanks! I found the payment history section. So the amount I'm getting deposited ($812) is less than my weekly benefit amount ($902) because I chose to have taxes withheld, right? I didn't realize they'd take that much out!

its right there on ur main page when u login... the amount ur supposed to get each week. but u gotta check if ur getting deductions for child support, taxes, pension etc. they take all that out BEFORE u see a penny. they took almost $200 from me for child support every week!!!

This is why I didn't choose to have taxes withheld! You get more money now when you need it, and just deal with it at tax time. Though I guess it depends on your situation!

I HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM!! The ESD website is SO CONFUSING! I spent THREE WEEKS trying to figure out why my payments were different from what it said my weekly amount was. Turns out I had federal taxes being withheld (which is 10%) AND I had an overpayment from 2023 they were collecting. NOWHERE did it clearly explain this on the main screen! You have to go to payment history and click on each individual payment to see the breakdown. The system is DESIGNED to confuse us!!!!

You're right that the payment details aren't super clear on the main screen. For anyone else confused: Go to your eServices account → Unemployment Claims → View Payment History → then click the blue link on any payment date to see the detailed breakdown with all deductions. This shows exactly what was taken out for taxes, overpayments, or other deductions before the final deposit amount.

If you're having trouble reaching ESD to explain your payment amounts, try using Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was going crazy trying to figure out why my payments were less than expected, but couldn't get through on the phones for days. Used their service and got connected to an actual ESD agent in about 15 minutes who walked through my payment history with me. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Completely worth it to get actual answers about your specific payment situation.

Thanks for the tip! If I keep having trouble understanding my payment breakdown I might try that. I've tried calling ESD directly twice this week and just got the 'high call volume' message both times.

mine says one thing on the homepage and another in the payment history lol. turns out the homepage doesnt include the $-10 adjustment they made for some reason last month. i dont even know why. just esd things i guess

Sometimes those small adjustments happen because of wage corrections from employers or calculation fixes. If it's just $10, probably not worth the hassle of calling to ask, but anything larger should definitely be questioned.

Since you mentioned being confused about the different terms, here's a quick explanation of the main payment terms you'll see on your ESD account: 1. Weekly Benefit Amount (WBA): The base amount you qualify for each week ($902 in your case) 2. Maximum Benefits Payable (MBP): Total available for your entire claim year (typically 26 x WBA) 3. Claim Balance: Remaining benefits available on your claim 4. Net Payment: What actually goes to your bank account after deductions You can always see your payment history with all deductions by going to the payment history section of your eServices account. Each payment will show exactly what was taken out for taxes or other deductions.

This is super helpful, thank you! I didn't realize there was such a big difference between the WBA and what actually gets deposited. Makes sense now. I found the detailed breakdown in my payment history and see that I'm having taxes withheld plus a small retirement pension deduction I forgot about.

when i was on unemployment last year i had this same question! i ended up just downloading the payment history and making my own spreadsheet to keep track of everything because the esd website is so confusing. helped me catch when they underpaid me one week too!

That's actually a really good idea. I'm an accountant so spreadsheets are kind of my thing anyway. Did you eventually get the underpayment fixed?

yeah but it took forever. had to send like 3 messages through the portal and finally called. they fixed it about 3 weeks later with backpay. document everything!
