Combined wage claim denied after ESD received wages - can't reach anyone by phone

I'm in a total nightmare with my unemployment claim. Lost my job in December 2025 but couldn't file right away because of a family emergency (father-in-law passed away). When I finally got around to filing in late January, I requested a combined wage claim since I had worked in Washington and Louisiana during my base year. At first everything seemed okay - I got approved and even received payment for one week. Then things got weird. They were supposedly processing my backdated weeks while waiting for Louisiana wage info. ESD actually closed my original claim and opened a new one, saying they were still waiting on Louisiana to report my wages there. This morning I got a denial letter saying there were "no hours reported" for my claim period! This makes absolutely NO sense because they already verified my hours and wages on the previous claim they closed! They literally had this information already! I've called at least 40 times in the past week and either get disconnected or placed on hold until the system eventually hangs up on me. I'm two months behind on my mortgage and about to lose my house. I honestly don't know what to do anymore. Has anyone dealt with this combined wage claim nightmare before? Any advice on how to actually speak to a human at ESD who can fix this mess?

This combined wage claim issue is unfortunately pretty common. The systems between states don't communicate well, and information often gets lost when ESD closes one claim and opens another. Here's what you need to do: 1. Get proof of your Louisiana wages (W2, paystubs, anything official) 2. File a formal appeal of the denial - you have 30 days from the date on the letter 3. In your appeal, explain that ESD already verified these wages in your previous claim 4. Request that they reference the previous claim number in their investigation I had a similar situation last year between Washington and Oregon. The appeal took about 3 weeks to resolve, but they eventually fixed it and paid all my backdated weeks.

Thank you for this clear advice. Do I need to mail physical copies of my Louisiana wage documents with the appeal, or can I upload them somewhere? And should I keep trying to call them while the appeal is processing, or just wait it out?

OMG the EXACT same thing happend to me!!!! except it was Idaho not Louisiana. ESD is THE WORST!!!!! they closed my claim and opened a new one and then denied it for the same reason. I had to call like 200 times before I got though. When I finally did the lady said it was a "system error" and that the info didn't transfer right when they made the new claim. took them 6 WEEKS to fix it and I almost got evicted. good luck man

That's exactly what I'm afraid of - 6 weeks is too long to wait! Did they at least backpay you for all the missed weeks once they fixed it?

I worked for ESD as a claims specialist until recently, and I can tell you this is unfortunately a common issue with combined wage claims. The problem happens when they close the initial claim and open a new one - sometimes the wage data doesn't transfer properly, especially from out-of-state. Here's what you should do: 1. File an appeal immediately (you have 30 days from the date on the denial letter) 2. In your appeal, specifically request they verify the wages from your previous claim AND check the Interstate Connection Network (ICON) for your Louisiana wages 3. Upload any documentation you have of your Louisiana employment (paystubs, tax documents, etc.) While this is processing, you should also try to reach someone by phone to flag your claim for special handling.

Thank you so much for this insider knowledge! I'll definitely mention the ICON system in my appeal. Is there a specific department or phone number I should try to reach for combined wage claim issues?

After struggling for weeks to get through to ESD about my combined wage issue, I finally had success using Claimyr (claimyr.com). It got me through to an actual ESD agent in about 25 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own with no luck. The agent was able to see that my wages from my previous claim hadn't transferred correctly to the new claim and fixed it on the spot. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 Definitely file the appeal like others suggested, but also try to get through by phone because someone with the right access can often fix these data transfer issues much faster than waiting for the appeal.

I used Claimyr last month when I was dealing with an adjudication issue. It definitely works - got me through to an agent in about 30 minutes when I had been trying for days. Worth it when you're desperate and can't get through any other way.

im in a similar situation with my claim...mines not a combined wage but they denied me saying I didn't work enough hours in my base year when I know I did! how do these people keep making these mistakes?? they have one job!! so frustrating.

Make sure you check which quarters they're using as your base year. Sometimes people get confused because ESD doesn't use the most recent quarter - they use the last 4 completed quarters before you filed. So if you filed in January 2026, they would look at October 2024 through September 2025, not including the last quarter of 2025.

To answer your question about filing the appeal - you can do it entirely online. Log into your eServices account, go to your claim, and look for the "Appeal" option. You'll be able to upload digital copies of your wage documents there. Just make sure they're clear and legible. And yes, you should absolutely continue trying to reach someone by phone while your appeal is processing. The appeal can take 3-6 weeks to resolve, but if you get through to the right agent by phone, they might be able to fix it much faster.

Thank you! I just checked eServices and found the appeal section. I'm going to gather all my documents tonight and file the appeal tomorrow morning. I'll also keep trying to call - maybe early morning when they first open will be less busy.

i dont get why they always have to make things so complicated?? like why close one claim just to open another one?? thats where all these problems start! the esd system is stuck in like 1995 or something

FOR REAL!!! their whole system is ancient. when i finally got through to someone they told me they had to manually enter my Idaho wages because the "automatic system failed" like what?? how is that still a thing in 2026??

UPDATE: I finally got through to someone at ESD this morning! Called right at 8:00 AM and only had to wait about 45 minutes. The agent confirmed exactly what everyone here said - when they closed my first claim and opened the new one, my wage data didn't transfer correctly. She said she can see all my Washington wages in the system, and she can also see that Louisiana had already reported my wages there (they were in the system but not attached to my new claim). She's escalated my case to a claims specialist who can manually reattach all my wage data to the current claim. Should be fixed within 5-7 business days. I'm still going to file that appeal just to be safe, but at least someone is working on fixing the issue now. Thanks everyone for your advice and support!

Great news! Smart move to still file the appeal - always good to have a backup plan with ESD. The 5-7 business days estimate is usually pretty accurate for these types of fixes. Make sure to keep checking your eServices account daily for updates.
