ESD denied my benefits over wrong job history - desperate to reach a REAL person

I'm at my wits end with this unemployment nightmare! ESD denied my claim saying I 'voluntarily quit' a job at Westside Manufacturing back in November. Here's the crazy part - I've NEVER worked there! I worked at Pacific Solutions until they had layoffs in January 2025, then briefly at TechCorp before they eliminated my position last month. That's it. I've submitted three different appeals through eServices explaining this mistake, but just keep getting automated responses. I've called the main ESD number probably 50+ times this week (not exaggerating) and either get disconnected or told the wait is over 4 hours. Has anyone actually managed to speak to a REAL PERSON at ESD lately? I'm about to miss rent and am getting desperate. There has to be a way to fix this obvious error in their system!

I had almost the exact same issue! ESD had me confused with someone with the same name who worked at some company I'd never heard of. The only way I finally got through was using Claimyr (claimyr.com). It's a service that basically holds your place in line and calls you back when an ESD agent is available. Worth checking out, they have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. I was skeptical but it worked for me when I needed to get someone to fix my claim that was denied for a similar reason.

Thank you! I'll look into that service right now. Did they actually fix your claim when you got through? How long did the whole process take after you finally spoke to someone?

Yes! Once I finally talked to a human, they fixed my claim within a week. The agent I spoke with could actually see my work history in their system and confirmed it didn't match what they had denied me for. Just make sure you have all your employment documentation ready before the call. The whole process took about 15 minutes on the phone once connected.

I hate to tell u this but ESD ALWAYS makes these kinds of mistakes!!! It happened to my cousin, my neighbor and ME. The system is BROKEN!!! When I finally got thru to someone they said I needed to provide proof of my employment history for the past 18 months even tho they should already have all that info. The whole system is designed to make you give up and go away!!!

That's what I'm afraid of... I don't want to give up but I'm seriously running out of options. Did your cousin or neighbor ever get their issues resolved or did they just give up?

This is actually a relatively common issue that has a specific solution path. What you're experiencing is likely an identity cross-match error in the ESD system. Here's what you should do: 1. Continue attempting to reach an ESD representative (I know that's frustrating) 2. Prepare documentation proving your actual employment history (W-2s, paystubs, employment verification letters) 3. Write a formal identity verification statement explaining the error 4. Request a formal adjudication on the issue rather than just appealing Identity cross-match errors must be handled through a specific process called an "Identity Verification Interview" rather than standard appeals. When you do reach a representative, specifically ask for this. They may need to transfer you to a claims specialist who can initiate this process. In the meantime, continue filing your weekly claims despite the denial. This will preserve your claim week history once the error is corrected.

Thank you so much for this detailed information! I didn't know about the "Identity Verification Interview" process. I'll definitely ask for that specifically when I get through. Should I upload my documentation to my eServices account now or wait until I speak with someone?

Go ahead and upload everything to your eServices account under the document upload section. Label them clearly (example: "Identity Verification - Previous Employment Documentation"). This creates a record in the system that someone might see before you get through by phone. Also, continue to file your weekly claims despite the denial - this is critical because they can't pay for weeks you didn't claim, even after they fix the error.

So this actually happened to my roomate last year and it turned out that someone had used his ssn for a job he never worked at!! You might wanna check your credit report and make sure nobody stole your identity!!

Oh no, I hadn't even thought of that possibility! That's really scary. I'll check my credit report right away. Did your roommate get his unemployment sorted out after discovering the identity theft?

Have you tried contacting your state representative? I was stuck in adjudication for 3 months with no movement until I contacted my district's state rep. Their office has liaisons that work directly with ESD and can often get things moving. Google "[your county] state representative" and you should find contact info. They often have constituent services forms right on their websites.

That's a really good idea, thank you! I'll look up my representative right now. Did you have to provide a lot of documentation when you contacted them?

They asked for basic info like my claim ID, last four of SSN, and a brief description of the issue. I also sent them copies of my denial letter and evidence showing it was incorrect. They had me sign a privacy release form so they could discuss my case with ESD. Within a week, I got a call from someone at ESD who had been assigned to review my case. Much faster than waiting in the regular queue!

This isn't helpful at all. Some people can't just "find a new job" immediately, and they legitimately need their unemployment benefits to survive while job searching. OP has a legitimate issue that deserves to be resolved.

I work in HR and deal with unemployment issues regularly. This is definitely an identification mix-up in the ESD system. I've seen many cases where ESD has confused claimants with similar names or SSNs. I'd recommend doing all of the following: 1. Continue trying to reach a live agent (others have suggested methods) 2. Submit a formal appeal through the OAH (Office of Administrative Hearings) - this is different from the eServices appeals you've submitted 3. Go to your local WorkSource office in person - sometimes they can help escalate these issues 4. Contact your state representative as someone suggested 5. Continue filing weekly claims despite the denial Most importantly, document EVERYTHING. Note the dates/times of all calls, take screenshots of all online submissions, and keep copies of all documents you submit. This creates a paper trail showing your due diligence that can help get any waiting week penalties waived once the issue is resolved.

Thank you for these detailed suggestions! I didn't know about the OAH formal appeal process - is there a specific form I need to fill out for that? And do you think it's worth visiting WorkSource in person even if they're not directly connected to the UI department?

Yes, you can find the OAH appeal form on the ESD website under "Appeals". It's different from the eServices appeal process. You'll submit this to the Office of Administrative Hearings directly. As for WorkSource, while they're technically separate from the UI department, many WorkSource offices have ESD staff on site who have internal connections and can sometimes escalate cases or provide direct contact information for UI specialists. It's worth a try, especially if you're getting nowhere with phone calls. Just be sure to bring all your documentation with you.

UPDATE: I finally got through to a real person at ESD! I used the Claimyr service that someone suggested above, and it worked great. Got a call back in about 2 hours. The agent confirmed it was indeed a case of mistaken identity - they had somehow merged my records with someone else's who had the same last name but different first name and SSN! They've escalated my case to a claims specialist who will call me within 48 hours to process the correction. I'm still going to submit that OAH appeal as backup, but it looks like things are finally moving in the right direction. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!
