Claim unexpectedly in adjudication after recent layoff - worried about timeline with no requests from ESD
Just got laid off on May 25th (only about 2 weeks ago) and my unemployment claim is already showing 'in adjudication' status. I'm freaking out after reading posts about 5+ week waits! I honestly don't understand why mine even went to adjudication in the first place. My former employer isn't contesting it as far as I know, and the ESD system already calculated my quarterly wages and weekly benefit amount correctly. The only weird thing is my employer put June 1st as my official termination date on paperwork, even though my last actual working day was May 25th. Could this date discrepancy be why it's in adjudication? Maybe it affected which quarters they're using to calculate my benefits? There's nothing in my ESD account requesting additional information from me - no alerts, no documents to upload, nothing. Is this normal? What should I expect timeline-wise? Anyone have recent experience with a similar situation?

Almost ALL claims go to adjudication these days, it's their standard process now. The real question is how long it takes. My claim back in February took 3 weeks even with zero issues. My friend just got approved after 6 weeks. There's really no way to predict unfortunately.

•3-6 weeks!? I'm going to be completely broke by then. Are there ways to speed it up or at least find out what they're actually reviewing?

The date discrepancy could definitely be causing the adjudication. When there's ANY difference between what you report and what your employer reports, it automatically triggers adjudication. Your best bet is calling ESD directly to ask what specifically needs to be resolved, because sometimes they don't update the online portal with the real reason. Do you have any PTO/vacation payout in your final check? That can also trigger adjudication since they need to determine if that affects your eligibility for the week(s) immediately after separation.

•Yes! I did get a vacation payout on my final check. I didn't even think about that being an issue. I've tried calling but can't get through - it just disconnects after the automated messages about high call volume.

•8 weeks is insane! Yes, I've been filing my weekly claims. Just feels pointless when nothing is happening.

Have you tried using Claimyr to reach an ESD agent? I was in adjudication for 4 weeks with no movement, then used their service (claimyr.com) to get connected to an actual person at ESD who found the issue and resolved it that day. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 Turns out my claim was stuck because of a simple wage verification that wasn't even showing on my online account. The agent manually reviewed it while I was on the phone.

•I've used it twice. It actually works. They basically keep dialing for you and get you into the ESD phone queue when there's an opening. Saved me HOURS of redial hell.

The date discrepancy PLUS the vacation payout is definitely why you're in adjudication. ESD has to verify that you weren't double-paid (getting unemployment for days you were technically still employed according to their records) and they have to determine how the vacation payout affects your eligibility. It's standard procedure. BTW don't stress too much - they'll backpay you for all eligible weeks once they approve your claim. Just keep doing your weekly claims and job search activities while you wait!

•Thank you for the explanation - that makes a lot of sense. I guess I just need to be patient but it's hard when bills are due!

•It's not rigged, just understaffed and overwhelmed. They actually approved my claim faster than I expected (3 weeks). They have to verify things to prevent fraud, which has been a huge problem.

One thing that helps is checking if there are any "Alerts" or tasks in your eServices account. Sometimes they need info but don't actually contact you about it. Also, make sure you're doing your 3 job search activities each week and documenting them properly. If you miss even one week of job search activities, it can delay your whole claim. The date discrepancy is common and shouldn't be a major issue as long as both dates are within the same quarter. The vacation payout might require them to determine if you were available for work during that period. I would definitely try to get through to an agent by phone to see what specifically is causing the delay.

•I've checked repeatedly for alerts but there aren't any. And yes, I've been carefully doing my 3 job search activities each week and documenting everything. I'll keep trying to reach someone by phone.

Quick update question: have you uploaded your ID verification documents yet? Sometimes claims get stuck in adjudication because they need to verify your identity first, but the request doesn't show up properly in the portal. I'd recommend uploading your driver's license/ID and Social Security card just to be safe. It's under the "Upload Documents" section.

•I did upload my driver's license when I first applied, but not my Social Security card. I'll upload that today just in case - thanks for the suggestion!

Any updates? Has your status changed at all?

•Update: I FINALLY got through to ESD yesterday! The agent confirmed it was the vacation payout plus the date discrepancy causing the adjudication. They said everything looks good otherwise and they've expedited the review. Supposedly should be resolved within 5-7 business days. Fingers crossed!

•That's great news! Make sure you keep doing your weekly claims while waiting. And please update us when it's resolved - helps others know what to expect time-wise.

FINAL UPDATE: My claim was approved! Took exactly 3 weeks and 2 days from when I first applied. All weeks were paid including the waiting week (not sure why, but I'm not complaining). To anyone else in adjudication - hang in there! And definitely try to speak with an agent if you can, it seemed to speed things up in my case.
