Can't get ahold of Washington ESD unemployment office - phone lines always busy
I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for over two weeks now about my unemployment claim that got flagged for identity verification. Every time I call the main number it just says they're experiencing high call volume and hangs up on me. I've tried calling right when they open at 8am, during lunch, even tried the different numbers I found online but nothing works. My benefits are on hold and I'm starting to panic about rent. Has anyone actually gotten through to a real person lately? What am I doing wrong?

•It's so frustrating! I don't understand how they expect us to resolve issues if we can't even talk to anyone.

•Have you tried the secure messaging system on your account? Sometimes that gets faster responses than calling.

The phone system has been terrible since they updated it last year. Try calling the technical support line instead of the main claims line - sometimes they can transfer you or at least give you better information about your specific issue.

•What's the technical support number? I haven't seen that one listed anywhere.

•It's on the SAW login page under 'Contact Us' but honestly even that one gets backed up during peak times.

I had the same problem last month when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Spent hours calling every day with no luck. Finally found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to a Washington ESD agent in like 20 minutes. They have some system that keeps calling for you until someone picks up. Check out claimyr.com - there's even a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ

•Never heard of that before. Is it legit? Sounds too good to be true.

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Cost me way less than the stress and time I was wasting trying to call myself.

•I'll look into this, thanks! At this point I'm willing to try anything.

For identity verification issues specifically, you might be able to upload documents through your SecureAccess Washington account instead of calling. Go to your unemployment dashboard and look for 'Upload Documents' or 'Identity Verification' sections.

•I already uploaded everything they asked for but the status hasn't changed. That's why I need to talk to someone.

Leo McDonald
•Yeah, sometimes the automated system doesn't process uploads properly. You definitely need to speak with an agent to get it sorted out.

The whole system is a joke. I've been calling for MONTHS about an overpayment notice that makes no sense and can't get through to save my life. They expect us to just sit here and starve while they can't even answer their phones.

•Seriously! How is this acceptable in 2025? Other states seem to have figured out their phone systems.

•The staffing issues got worse after they laid off contractors last year. Now they're understaffed and overwhelmed.

try calling tuesday or wednesday mornings right at 8am sharp, sometimes better luck midweek

•I've tried that multiple times, still just get the busy message and hang up.

For what it's worth, identity verification usually takes 7-10 business days to process once they have all your documents. If it's been longer than that, then yes you definitely need to call to see what's holding it up.

Kelsey Chin
•It's been 12 business days since I uploaded everything. My account still shows 'pending identity verification' with no updates.

Jessica Nolan
•That's definitely too long. Something's stuck in the system and needs manual review by an agent.

I had my identity verification completed last week actually. Took forever to get through but the agent was really helpful once I finally talked to someone. She said they're seeing a lot of cases where the automated system flags legitimate claims by mistake.

•How did you finally get through? What time and day?

•Actually I used that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier. Worked way better than trying to call myself.

Has anyone tried going to a WorkSource office in person? I know they can't process claims directly but maybe they can help with the calling situation.

Leo McDonald
•WorkSource can help with job search requirements and some general questions, but for identity verification you really need to reach the Washington ESD claims center directly.

Sebastián Stevens
•Figured as much but worth asking. This whole situation is ridiculous.

Anyone know if there's a better time of month to call? Like maybe right after benefit payments go out when call volume might be lower?

Jessica Nolan
•Call volume is usually highest on Mondays and right after people file their weekly claims. Mid-week afternoons sometimes have slightly better odds.

Norah Quay
•I'll try Wednesday afternoon then. Though at this point I'm losing hope.

This is exactly why I switched to using Claimyr after my first week of failed calling attempts. Life's too short to spend hours listening to busy signals. The agents can actually fix these identity verification issues pretty quickly once you get connected.

Kelsey Chin
•I'm seriously considering it at this point. How exactly does it work?
0 coins
Nathan Dell
•You just tell them what you need to discuss with Washington ESD and they handle all the calling and waiting. Then they connect you when an agent picks up. Super simple.

maybe try the spanish language line? heard sometimes those have shorter wait times

Leo McDonald
•That only works if you actually speak Spanish though. They'll transfer you back to English and you'll lose your place in line.

I feel for everyone dealing with this. The phone system crisis has been going on for years and Washington ESD just keeps saying they're 'working on improvements' but nothing changes. Meanwhile people can't get their legitimate benefits.

Bethany Groves
•Exactly! They have no accountability. We pay into this system and then can't access it when we need it.

•The callback system they promised last year never materialized either. Still the same broken phone tree.

For identity verification specifically, make sure you have your Social Security card, driver's license, and any other documents they requested ready before calling. The agents can sometimes verify your identity over the phone if you have everything available.

Kelsey Chin
•Good tip! I have all my documents scanned and ready. Just need to actually reach someone.

The automated system sometimes tells you what documents are missing from your identity verification. Check your correspondence section in your account - there might be a message explaining exactly what they need.
0 coins
Kelsey Chin
•I've checked everywhere and there's no specific message about missing documents. Just the generic 'pending identity verification' status.
0 coins
Amaya Watson
•Yeah that usually means they need to manually review what you submitted. Definitely need to talk to an agent.

Update: I finally got through using Claimyr this morning! The agent said my adjudication issue was just sitting in a queue waiting for manual review. She fixed it in 5 minutes. Wish I had tried this weeks ago instead of wasting all that time calling.

•That's awesome! I'm definitely going to try Claimyr tomorrow. This gives me hope.

•How much did it cost if you don't mind me asking?

•Way less than I expected, and totally worth it considering how much time and stress it saved me.

Pro tip: when you do get through to an agent, ask them to add notes to your account about what was discussed. That way if you need to call again, the next agent can see the history instead of starting from scratch.

Jessica Nolan
•Great advice! Also get the agent's name or ID number for your records.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions! I'm going to try Claimyr first thing tomorrow morning. Will update this thread once I hopefully get my identity verification sorted out. It's reassuring to know I'm not the only one dealing with this mess.

This thread should be pinned somewhere. The phone access issue affects so many people and Washington ESD doesn't seem to care about fixing it.

Jessica Nolan
•Agreed. Maybe we should start documenting successful strategies and times that work better than others.

Just want to add that identity verification delays can also trigger job search requirement issues, so make sure to keep filing your weekly claims even while this is pending. Don't let other problems pile up.

Kelsey Chin
•Good point! I've been keeping up with my weekly claims but wasn't sure if I should continue the job search activities.

Savannah Weiner
•Yes, definitely keep doing your job searches and logging them. The identity verification is separate from those requirements.

I've been dealing with Washington ESD phone issues for months now trying to resolve a simple address change that got my account locked. The automated system is completely broken - it either hangs up immediately or puts you in an endless loop. I finally broke down and used one of those callback services someone mentioned here and got through in under an hour. Cost me a small fee but honestly worth every penny compared to the weeks I wasted trying to call myself. The agent was super helpful and fixed my issue in minutes. Sometimes you just have to accept that the state's phone system is fundamentally broken and find workarounds.

•This is exactly what I needed to hear! I've been hesitating about trying one of those callback services but your experience sounds similar to mine - weeks of frustration with the broken phone system. Which service did you use? I'm at the point where a small fee is definitely worth it to get this resolved and move on with my life.
