Can you get unemployment while working part-time in Washington?
I'm really confused about this whole situation. I lost my full-time job at a retail store last month but I picked up some part-time hours at a coffee shop - maybe 15-20 hours a week. My friend said I can still file for unemployment benefits with Washington ESD even though I'm working these few hours. Is this actually true? I don't want to mess anything up or get in trouble for filing when I shouldn't. The Washington ESD website is kind of confusing about this stuff.

Yes, you can absolutely collect partial unemployment benefits while working part-time in Washington! This is called 'partial unemployment' and it's designed exactly for situations like yours. You just need to report your part-time earnings when you file your weekly claims. Washington ESD will reduce your benefit amount based on how much you earn, but you'll still get some benefits as long as you're earning less than your full weekly benefit amount plus $5.

•Oh wow, I had no idea this was even a thing! So I should definitely file a claim then? I was worried they'd reject me for having any work at all.

•Definitely file! The key is being honest about your earnings. They have a formula where they subtract your weekly earnings minus $5 from your weekly benefit amount. So if your benefit is $300/week and you earn $100, you'd get $205 in benefits.

This is one of those things Washington ESD doesn't explain very well on their website. I was in a similar situation last year - lost my main job but kept doing some freelance work. You definitely qualify for partial benefits. Just make sure you report ALL your earnings, even small amounts. They cross-reference with employers so any unreported income will cause problems later.

•Good to know about reporting everything. The coffee shop pays me in cash sometimes - I assume I still need to report that?

•Yes, report ALL income regardless of how you're paid. Cash, check, doesn't matter. Washington ESD wants to know about every penny you earn during your claim period.

I struggled with this exact question for weeks before I found Claimyr. Couldn't get through to Washington ESD on the phone to ask about partial unemployment rules. Claimyr helped me get connected to an actual agent who explained everything clearly. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really saved me a lot of stress trying to figure this out on my own.

•Never heard of Claimyr before but the phone situation with Washington ESD is ridiculous. Been trying to call for days about my own questions.

•Yeah, that's exactly why I used Claimyr. They handle the calling part so you don't have to spend hours on hold or getting disconnected. Worth checking out if you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD.

The partial unemployment thing is great but be prepared for the job search requirements. You still need to do your job searches every week even if you're working part-time. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week. Don't forget to log them in your WorkSourceWA account!

•Wait, I still have to look for jobs even though I'm already working? That seems weird.

•Yep, because you're still considered partially unemployed. The job search requirement doesn't go away just because you have some part-time work. You need to be actively seeking full-time employment.

•This is so stupid. If someone is working part-time they're obviously trying to make ends meet. Why make them jump through more hoops?

Been doing partial unemployment for 3 months now. Works pretty well once you get the hang of it. Just be super careful about reporting your hours and earnings correctly each week. I made a mistake once and reported my gross instead of net earnings - caused a whole mess with overpayment notices.

Aisha Patel
•Do I report gross or net earnings? I'm getting conflicting info online.

LilMama23
•You report GROSS earnings - that's before taxes are taken out. Washington ESD wants to know your total earnings, not what you take home after deductions.

The whole system is set up to confuse people. I swear Washington ESD makes this stuff complicated on purpose. Why can't they just have clear answers on their website instead of making everyone call or figure it out through trial and error?

•Seriously! I've been on their website for hours trying to understand the partial benefit calculation. It shouldn't be this hard.

•The formula is actually pretty straightforward once you know it: Weekly Benefit Amount - (Earnings - $5) = Partial Benefit. So if you normally get $400/week and earn $150, you'd get $255 in benefits.

I tried calling Washington ESD about this exact question last week and gave up after being on hold for 2 hours. Ended up just filing my claim and hoping for the best. Probably not the smartest approach but what else can you do when you can't reach anyone?

•That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. I was in the same boat - couldn't get through to anyone at Washington ESD. They got me connected to an agent in like 10 minutes instead of hours of waiting.

•Hmm, might have to check that out. Is there a cost involved?

•There is a fee but honestly it was worth it for me to avoid the phone runaround. Plus the agent was able to answer multiple questions I had about my claim.

One thing to watch out for - if your part-time earnings get too high, you might not qualify for any benefits that week. There's a threshold where if you earn more than your weekly benefit amount plus $5, you get zero. But you can still file your weekly claim to keep your claim active.

Aisha Patel
•So even if I don't get money that week, I should still file the weekly claim?
0 coins
Dmitri Volkov
•Exactly! You need to file every week to keep your claim active, even if you don't receive benefits that week due to high earnings.

Does anyone know if tips count as earnings? I work at a restaurant part-time and get tips that vary week to week. Do I need to estimate those or what?
0 coins
LilMama23
•Yes, tips absolutely count as earnings. Report your actual tip income for each week. If tips vary a lot, just report what you actually received that specific week, not an average.

Ava Williams
•Thanks! That makes sense. I was worried about having to guess or average them out.

I've been on partial unemployment for 6 weeks now. The process is pretty smooth once you understand it. Just make sure you're available for full-time work and actively job searching. Washington ESD can audit your job search activities so keep good records.

Aisha Patel
•What do you mean by available for full-time work? Like, if my part-time job scheduled me for more hours, would that be a problem?
0 coins
Raj Gupta
•You need to be able to accept full-time work if it's offered. If your part-time job is interfering with your ability to take a full-time position, that could be an issue. But normal part-time scheduling shouldn't be a problem.

Pro tip: keep detailed records of everything. Your work hours, earnings, job search activities, everything. Washington ESD can request documentation at any time and you don't want to be scrambling to find records from weeks ago.

•Good advice! I learned this the hard way when they asked for my job search records and I could only find half of them.

The partial unemployment thing is actually pretty helpful. It encourages people to take part-time work instead of just sitting around waiting for full-time jobs. Better than some other states that make it harder to work while collecting benefits.

•True, at least Washington has a decent system for this. Still frustrating how hard it is to get clear information though.

Been there! Filed my first partial claim last month. The hardest part was figuring out the WorkSourceWA job search logging system. Make sure you create an account there and log your searches properly. Washington ESD checks that system.

•I haven't set up WorkSourceWA yet. Is that something I need to do right away?

Keisha Thompson
•Yeah, set it up ASAP. You need it to log your required job searches. Don't wait until your first weekly claim filing.

Quick question - if I get called in for extra shifts at my part-time job, can I turn them down to stay eligible for benefits? Or do I have to accept all available work?
0 coins
LilMama23
•You can turn down part-time work that would pay less than your unemployment benefits. But you need to be careful about the reasoning. Washington ESD wants to see you're genuinely seeking full-time employment.

Paolo Bianchi
•That makes sense. I don't want to do anything that would jeopardize my benefits.

I used Claimyr a few months ago when I had questions about partial benefits and working. Really helpful to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD who knew what they were talking about. The website info is so vague compared to getting real answers from an agent.

•How long did it take to get connected? I've been thinking about trying them but wasn't sure if it was worth it.

•Maybe 15 minutes total? Way faster than trying to call Washington ESD directly. The agent answered like 5 different questions I had about my claim situation.

One more thing to remember - your benefit year is still limited to 26 weeks total, even if you're doing partial unemployment. So if you're working part-time for several months while collecting, those weeks still count toward your total entitlement.

Aisha Patel
•Good point! I hadn't thought about that. So I need to keep looking for full-time work actively, not just coast on partial benefits.

The system actually works pretty well for encouraging people to take whatever work they can find while still looking for something better. Just wish Washington ESD made the rules clearer upfront instead of people having to figure it out through forums like this.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful info! I'm definitely going to file my claim and report my part-time earnings. Sounds like as long as I'm honest about everything and keep looking for full-time work, I should be fine.
