Can I still apply for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD right now?

I just got laid off yesterday from my warehouse job and I'm wondering if I can still apply for unemployment benefits or if there's some kind of deadline I missed? I've never had to file for unemployment before and I'm not sure how this works. Do I need to wait a certain amount of time or should I apply right away? Also not sure if Washington ESD is even accepting new applications right now with everything going on. Any help would be appreciated!

Yes, you can absolutely still apply for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD! There's no deadline to miss - you can file your initial claim anytime after you become unemployed. Actually, you should file as soon as possible because your benefit year starts the week you file, not the week you lost your job. Go to esd.wa.gov and click on 'Apply for Benefits' to get started.

Thank you! That's a relief. I was worried I had to wait or something. I'll go file right now.

Yeah definitely don't wait. I made that mistake and lost out on a week of benefits because I thought I had to wait until the following Monday or something.

The sooner the better! Washington ESD processes new applications all the time. When you file, make sure you have your Social Security number, employment history for the last 18 months, and reason for separation ready. The system will walk you through everything step by step. After you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to get paid.

Good to know about the weekly claims - I had no idea you had to do that every week.

The weekly claims are super important. If you forget to file one week, you won't get paid for that week and you can't go back and file it later.

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD when I needed to file my claim last month. Kept getting busy signals and the website was slow. If you run into issues like that, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual person at Washington ESD. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Made the whole process so much easier.

Never heard of that before. Is it legit? I'm always skeptical of third-party services for government stuff.

0 coins

Yeah it's totally legitimate. They just help you get through the phone lines to talk to Washington ESD staff. I was skeptical too at first but it actually worked.

ugh the washington esd website is such a pain to navigate sometimes. took me forever to figure out where to apply when i lost my job

It's gotten better over the years but yeah, it can be confusing if you've never used it before. The mobile version is actually easier to use than the desktop version in my opinion.

I'll try it on my phone then. Thanks for the tip!

One thing to remember - Washington ESD has work search requirements now. You'll need to do at least 3 job search activities per week and keep track of them in your online account. This includes things like applying for jobs, going to job fairs, networking activities, etc. Make sure you understand these requirements before you start filing weekly claims.

3 job search activities per week? That seems like a lot. What counts as a job search activity?

0 coins

Applying for jobs, attending job interviews, going to career workshops, networking events, even updating your resume can count. Washington ESD has a list of approved activities on their website.

Yeah and they actually check this stuff now. My friend got in trouble because he wasn't keeping track properly.

Just wanted to add - if you quit your job instead of being laid off, you might not be eligible for benefits. Washington ESD will review your separation reason and decide if you qualify. Being laid off should definitely qualify you though.

I was definitely laid off, not quit. The whole warehouse is shutting down next month so they're letting people go in waves.

0 coins

That sucks about the warehouse closing. At least you should have no problem getting approved for benefits with that reason.

Make sure you file your weekly claims on time every week! I think the deadline is Saturday night but don't quote me on that. If you miss filing a weekly claim you lose that week's benefits permanently.

Actually the weekly claim deadline is Sunday at midnight. But yeah, definitely don't miss it or you lose that week forever.

Norman Fraser

•

Good to know about the Sunday deadline. I'll set a reminder on my phone.

I remember when I first applied it took like 2-3 weeks before I got my first payment. Don't panic if it doesn't happen right away - there's usually some processing time involved, especially if they need to verify your employment history.

2-3 weeks?! I was hoping to get something sooner than that. I have bills due next week.

0 coins

Sorry, I know it's stressful. Sometimes it's faster but I wanted to set realistic expectations. The first payment is always the slowest.

Mine only took about a week but that was before COVID so things might be different now.

If your claim gets stuck in adjudication for some reason, that's when you really might need to call Washington ESD to get it moving. The phone lines are always busy though. That Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier might be worth looking into if that happens.

Norman Fraser

What's adjudication? Should I be worried about that?

Avery Davis

•

Adjudication is when they need to review something about your claim before they can approve it. It's not necessarily bad, just means they need more info or clarification about something.

also dont forget you have to report any income you earn while collecting unemployment, even if its just a few hours of part time work. washington esd will reduce your benefits based on what you earn but you can still get partial benefits

Norman Fraser

•

That's good to know. I might try to pick up some gig work while I'm looking for a full-time job.

0 coins

Yes, you can work part-time and still collect partial benefits. Just make sure you report all earnings accurately when you file your weekly claims.

The whole process is pretty straightforward once you get started. Washington ESD has improved their online system a lot over the past few years. Just have patience with the initial setup and make sure you keep filing those weekly claims every week.

One more tip - create your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account first if you don't already have one. You'll need that to access your Washington ESD account and file claims online.

Norman Fraser

I think I already have a SAW account from when I had to do something with L&I a few years ago. Can I use the same one?

0 coins

Adaline Wong

•

Yes, you can use the same SAW account for multiple state services including Washington ESD unemployment benefits.

if you need help reaching someone at washington esd by phone and cant get through, i had success with claimyr too. saved me hours of calling and redialing. the website is claimyr.com and they show you exactly how it works

0 coins

How much does something like that cost? I'm already tight on money since I lost my job.

Gabriel Ruiz

•

I thought it was worth it considering how much time it saved me, but I understand being tight on money. The regular application process online doesn't require calling anyone though.

Just remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld from your weekly payments or pay them later when you file your tax return. Something to keep in mind for next year.

0 coins

Norman Fraser

•

Oh wow, I didn't know unemployment was taxable. Thanks for mentioning that!

0 coins

Vince Eh

•

Yeah, I learned that the hard way my first time collecting unemployment. Ended up owing money at tax time because I didn't have anything withheld.

0 coins

The most important thing is just to get started with your application. Washington ESD is definitely still accepting new claims and processing them regularly. Don't overthink it - the system will guide you through everything you need to know.

0 coins

Norman Fraser

•

You're right, I should stop overthinking and just get it done. Thanks again everyone!

0 coins

That's the spirit! The sooner you apply, the sooner you can start getting benefits. Good luck!
