Can I get a car with unemployment benefits - Washington ESD restrictions?
I'm currently receiving unemployment benefits through Washington ESD and my car just broke down completely. The repair costs are more than the car is worth so I need to get a different vehicle. Can I use my unemployment money to buy a car or are there restrictions on what I can spend the benefits on? I need reliable transportation for job interviews and my job search requirements. Has anyone dealt with this situation before?

There are no specific restrictions from Washington ESD on how you spend your unemployment benefits once you receive them. The money is yours to use for living expenses, which includes transportation needs. However, keep in mind that you still need to maintain your job search activities and be available for work.

•That's a relief to hear. I was worried there might be some rule against making larger purchases while on unemployment.

•Just make sure you can still afford your other bills after the car purchase. UI benefits aren't forever.

You're allowed to spend your unemployment benefits however you need to. Transportation is actually considered an essential expense, especially since you need it for job searching and interviews. Washington ESD requires you to be actively looking for work and available to accept suitable employment, so having reliable transportation actually supports those requirements.

•Good point about needing transportation for the job search requirements. I hadn't thought about it that way.

•Exactly! Plus if you get a job offer and can't get there because of transportation issues, that could affect your benefits.

I was in a similar situation last year when my transmission died. I ended up using some of my UI benefits for a down payment on a used car. No issues with Washington ESD at all. The only thing that matters to them is that you're meeting your weekly claim requirements and job search activities.

•How did you handle the weekly claims while dealing with the car situation? Did you mention it to Washington ESD?

Atticus Domingo
•I didn't need to mention it specifically. The weekly claims just ask about work and earnings, not about your spending. As long as you're still available for work, you're fine.

Actually, I had trouble reaching Washington ESD when I had questions about benefit usage rules. The phone lines are always busy and I kept getting disconnected. I ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual agent. They have this system that calls you back when an agent is available, and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•I might need to try that if I have more questions. The Washington ESD phone system is definitely frustrating.

•That's actually pretty clever. I didn't know there were services like that for getting through to government agencies.

wait so there's literally no restrictions on spending unemployment money?? that seems weird to me

•Unemployment insurance is designed to replace lost wages, so once you receive it, it's treated like any other income for spending purposes.

•ok that makes sense when you put it that way

The key thing is maintaining your eligibility requirements. You need to keep filing your weekly claims, do your job search activities, and be available for work. As long as you're doing those things, how you spend your benefits is up to you. Transportation is definitely a legitimate expense.

•I'm definitely keeping up with all my requirements. The job search log and weekly claims are all up to date.

One thing to consider is whether you'll be able to keep up with car payments if you find a job soon. UI benefits will stop once you're employed again, so make sure the payment fits your expected income from a new job too.

•That's a really good point. I'm looking at used cars in a reasonable price range, nothing too expensive.

•Smart approach. Better to be conservative with the purchase amount.

I remember being paranoid about spending my unemployment money on anything other than basic bills when I first started receiving benefits. Turns out I was overthinking it. The money is meant to help you survive while you look for work, and transportation is part of survival in most places.

•Yeah, I think a lot of people worry about this unnecessarily. The rules are pretty straightforward.

Just make sure you keep all your documentation in case you ever need it for any reason. Not that Washington ESD typically asks for receipts or anything, but it's good to have records of major purchases during your unemployment period.

•Good advice. I'll definitely keep all the paperwork from the car purchase.

•Documentation is always a good idea, though like you said, it's not typically required for benefit spending.

The unemployment system in Washington is actually pretty reasonable about these things. They understand people have legitimate expenses while they're between jobs. Transportation is obviously essential for getting back to work.

•That's been my experience so far. The system seems designed to actually help people get back on their feet.

I bought a car while on unemployment two years ago and never had any issues. Washington ESD cares about whether you're looking for work and available to work, not about your spending decisions. Having reliable transportation actually helps with both of those requirements.

The only spending restrictions I've ever heard of are for specific grant programs or assistance programs, not regular unemployment insurance. UI is meant to replace your wages, so you use it like you would any paycheck.

Amy Fleming
•That makes perfect sense. I was maybe confusing it with other types of assistance programs.

•Yeah, programs like food stamps have spending restrictions, but unemployment insurance doesn't work that way.

Just a reminder to keep documenting your job search activities even while you're dealing with the car situation. Don't let that slip while you're focused on transportation issues.

•Absolutely. I've been staying on top of my job search log and weekly claims throughout this whole car situation.

One more thing - if you end up getting a job offer and need to start immediately, make sure you can handle the transportation logistics. Some people lose job opportunities because they can't get to work reliably on short notice.

•That's exactly why I need to get this car situation sorted out ASAP. Don't want to miss opportunities because of transportation issues.

I had a similar transportation crisis last year and ended up using Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD when I had questions about continuing benefits while job hunting without a car. The agent confirmed that lack of transportation could potentially affect your 'able and available' status if it prevents you from accepting suitable work. Getting a reliable car was definitely the right move.

Amy Fleming
•That's a really important point about the 'able and available' requirement. I hadn't considered that angle.

•Yeah, it's one of those things that isn't obvious until you think about it. Transportation is pretty crucial for employment.

Bottom line: you're fine to buy a car with your unemployment benefits. It's a reasonable and necessary expense for someone who's actively job searching. Washington ESD won't have any issues with it as long as you're meeting all your other requirements.

For what it's worth, I've used Claimyr twice now when I needed to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD about benefit questions. Much better than the regular phone system. The callback feature is genius - no more sitting on hold for hours just to get disconnected.
