Can you buy a car while on unemployment benefits in Washington?
I've been on Washington ESD unemployment for about 6 weeks now and my old car finally died on me. I found a decent used car for $8,500 but I'm worried about how this might affect my benefits. Will Washington ESD see this as having too much money or assets? I have some savings from before I lost my job plus the unemployment payments. Do I need to report a car purchase to them? Really need reliable transportation for job interviews but don't want to mess up my claim.

You're fine to buy a car while on unemployment. Washington ESD doesn't have asset limits for regular UI benefits like some other programs do. They care about your weekly earnings, not what you own.

•That's a huge relief! I was so worried they'd think I was somehow gaming the system.

•Yeah totally different from food stamps or medicaid which do look at assets

The only thing Washington ESD cares about is if you're working and earning money each week. Car purchases, rent, other expenses - none of that matters for your weekly claim certification. Just keep reporting your job search activities and any work income accurately.

•Good to know! I've been doing my job searches through WorkSource like I'm supposed to.

•WorkSource is such a pain but you gotta do what you gotta do to keep benefits flowing

Actually having a car might help your job search since you can apply to places further away. Just make sure you're still available for work and meeting the job search requirements.

•That's exactly what I was thinking - opens up way more job opportunities

•Definitely report the expanded job search area if it helps you find more suitable positions

I bought a car last year while on unemployment and had zero issues. Washington ESD never asked about it, never affected my benefits. You're overthinking this.

•Same here, bought furniture and everything while on UI. No problems at all.

The only time assets matter is if you're on other programs like TANF or food assistance. Regular unemployment insurance doesn't have asset tests. I learned this the hard way when I was stressing about having savings in my account.

•Oh that's good to know about the difference between programs

•Exactly right. UI is insurance you paid into, not welfare based on need.

honestly i think you're fine but if you're really worried you could call washington esd and ask directly. though good luck getting through on the phone lol

•Yeah I've tried calling before and it's impossible to get through

•There's actually a service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. They handle the calling for you and have you join when they get an agent on the line. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•oh interesting, never heard of that before but makes sense given how impossible it is to reach them

Buy the car! You need transportation to get to job interviews and potentially to work. Having reliable transportation actually makes you more employable.

•You're absolutely right - can't get a job if I can't get to interviews

•Plus showing up to interviews stressed about transportation doesn't help your chances

Wait, are you sure about this? I thought there were rules about having too much money while on benefits?

•You're thinking of means-tested programs. Unemployment insurance isn't means-tested - it's based on your work history and earnings, not your current assets.

•Right, you already paid into the unemployment system through payroll taxes when you were working. It's your insurance benefit, not charity.

I was in the same situation last month. Bought a $12,000 car while on unemployment and everything was fine. Washington ESD doesn't track your purchases or bank account.

•That's even more than what I'm looking at spending, so that's really reassuring

•12k is a decent car these days with used car prices so high

The system is already set up to help you find work, not punish you for having basic needs like transportation. Go ahead and buy the car.

•That's a good way to think about it - transportation is a basic need for job searching

Fatima Al-Hashemi
•Exactly, they want you to be able to work, not stuck at home without a car

Just to be extra clear - the only financial thing Washington ESD cares about is your weekly earnings from work. Everything else (savings, purchases, gifts, etc.) is irrelevant to your UI claim.

•Perfect, that's exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you!

•This is correct. Only report work earnings when you file your weekly claims.

I wish I had known this earlier. I put off buying a car for months because I was scared it would affect my benefits. Ended up missing out on job opportunities because of transportation issues.

One thing to consider - if you're financing the car, make sure the monthly payments fit your budget with unemployment benefits. But there's no rule against it.

•Good point, I'm planning to pay cash to avoid monthly payments while unemployed

this whole thread is making me realize how much unnecessary stress i put myself through when i was on unemployment. nobody explains this stuff clearly

Go buy that car! You've got multiple people here confirming it's fine, and you need reliable transportation. Don't let anxiety about the system keep you from making practical decisions.

Just remember to keep track of your mileage for job interviews and job fairs - that's tax deductible when you're job searching.

Jamal Anderson
•Oh good tip! I hadn't thought about the tax implications

Amara Eze
•Yes, job search expenses including mileage can be deducted on your taxes

I had to deal with Washington ESD about a different issue and ended up using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. It actually worked - they got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of me calling for hours.

Jamal Anderson
•That's amazing! I might need to try that if I have any other questions

•20 minutes vs hours of calling sounds like a no-brainer to me

The key thing is keeping your job search active and reporting accurately. Having a car will probably help you expand your search area and get to more interviews.
