Can you use Washington ESD unemployment benefits as proof of income for a car loan?
I've been getting unemployment benefits from Washington ESD for about 2 months now and I really need to buy a car to help with my job search. My old car finally died and I'm having trouble getting to interviews. I'm wondering if dealerships or banks will accept my unemployment benefit letter as proof of income when applying for an auto loan? Has anyone had success using their UI benefits for car financing? I get $487 per week and have been consistently filing my weekly claims without any issues.

Yes, unemployment benefits can count as income for car loans! You'll need your monetary determination letter from Washington ESD that shows your weekly benefit amount. Most lenders will accept this, though they might require additional documentation like your recent benefit payment history. The key is showing consistent payments and that you're actively job searching.

•That's great to hear! I do have my monetary determination letter. Do you know if they care that it's temporary income?

•Some lenders are pickier about temporary income, but many understand unemployment benefits especially if you have remaining weeks left on your claim. Having proof of active job search helps too.

I literally just went through this last month! Used my Washington ESD benefits as proof of income for a used car loan at a credit union. They accepted my benefit payment summary and wanted to see 3 months of consistent payments. Got approved but the interest rate was higher than if I had regular employment income.

•Which credit union did you use? And what kind of interest rate did you get if you don't mind me asking?

•I went with BECU. Got 8.5% which isn't great but not terrible considering. They were pretty understanding about the unemployment situation.

•BECU is good for this stuff. They actually consider the full picture instead of just rejecting unemployment income outright.

Just a heads up - make sure you factor in that your unemployment benefits will eventually end. Most UI claims in Washington last up to 26 weeks unless you qualify for extensions. Lenders might ask about your job search progress and what your income plan is after benefits expire. Having a realistic timeline helps with approval.

•Good point. I'm actively interviewing and have a few promising leads. I've been doing my job search activities through WorkSourceWA like required.

•That's smart. Having documentation of your job search activities can actually help with lenders because it shows you're serious about getting back to work.

This is exactly what I needed to see! I've been putting off car shopping because I wasn't sure if my unemployment would count. Been getting benefits for 6 weeks now but was worried about getting rejected. Did you need anything besides the monetary determination letter?

•I also brought my recent benefit payment confirmations from the Washington ESD website and my bank statements showing the deposits. Having multiple forms of proof helps.

•Thanks! I can print those out from my SecureAccess Washington account.

Word of warning - dealership financing might be trickier than going directly to a bank or credit union. Some dealerships have policies against unemployment income but banks are often more flexible. Shop around before you go to the lot.

•That makes sense. I was planning to check with my bank first anyway.

•Agreed. Dealerships often use subprime lenders who are even pickier about income sources. Better to get pre-approved somewhere else first.

be careful about taking on debt while unemployed tho... what if you dont find work before benefits run out? then ur stuck with car payments and no income

•I understand the concern but I really need transportation to get to interviews. It's been a huge barrier to my job search.

•Sometimes you need to take calculated risks. Having reliable transportation can actually help you find work faster, which makes the loan payment worth it.

Check if Washington state has any programs to help unemployed people get transportation. I know some states have special loan programs or grants for job seekers who need cars.

•I haven't heard of anything like that but I'll look into it. Do you know where I should check?

•Try calling 211 or checking with your local WorkSource office. They sometimes know about programs that aren't well advertised.

Another option is looking at buy-here-pay-here lots. They're more flexible with income verification but usually have higher interest rates and older cars. Might be worth considering if traditional financing doesn't work out.

•I'd prefer to avoid those if possible since I've heard they can be predatory. But it's good to know as a backup option.

•Yeah, those places can be sketchy. Stick with legitimate banks and credit unions if you can.

Make sure your unemployment claim is in good standing before applying. If you have any pending issues or adjudication problems, that could complicate things with lenders who verify income.

•My claim has been smooth so far. No adjudication or payment holds, just filing my weekly claims regularly.

I tried this a few months ago and got rejected by three different places. Maybe my credit wasn't great but they all said unemployment income was too risky. ended up having to wait until I got a job

•Credit score definitely matters a lot. If your credit is decent, unemployment income is more likely to be accepted.

•yeah my credit was pretty rough at the time. probably would have been different if it was better

Have you considered a cosigner? If you have family or friends with good income and credit, that might make approval easier even with unemployment benefits as your primary income.

Zara Rashid
•I'd rather not involve family if I can avoid it, but that's a good backup plan if I can't get approved on my own.

Document everything with Washington ESD! Keep copies of all your benefit letters, payment confirmations, and weekly claim submissions. Some lenders want to see a really detailed payment history.

•Good advice. I've been keeping records anyway for my own tracking.

What about lease vs buy? Sometimes leasing is easier to qualify for with unemployment income since the monthly payments are usually lower.

Zara Rashid
•I haven't really considered leasing. Wouldn't that end up costing more in the long run?

Liam Fitzgerald
•Usually yes, but if you just need transportation while job hunting and expect to be employed again soon, it might be worth it for the lower monthly payment.

Try smaller local banks too, not just the big ones. Sometimes they're more willing to work with people in unique situations like unemployment.

•I'll definitely check out some local banks. They might be more understanding.

Don't forget to budget for insurance! If you haven't had a car in a while, insurance costs might be higher than you expect, especially if you're financing and need full coverage.

•True, I need to get insurance quotes before I commit to anything. Don't want any surprises.

I'm in a similar situation and have been hesitant to even try. This thread is giving me hope that it's actually possible. Thanks for asking this question!

One more tip - if you do get approved, try to keep the loan term as short as you can afford. Since unemployment is temporary, you want to minimize how long you'll be paying for the car.
0 coins
Zara Rashid
•That makes sense. I'll aim for the shortest term I can manage with the monthly payment.

Also remember that having a car might help you expand your job search area, which could lead to finding work faster. Sometimes the investment in transportation pays for itself by opening up more opportunities.

Zara Rashid
•Exactly! Right now I'm limited to jobs I can reach by bus, which really narrows things down.
