Can I call Washington ESD unemployment office directly?
I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to actually call unemployment and talk to a real person. My claim has been stuck in adjudication for over a month and I can't get any answers through the online system. Every time I try the main number I either get disconnected or sit on hold for hours before getting cut off. Is there even a point in trying to call anymore? Has anyone actually gotten through to Washington ESD recently?

I've been trying to call for weeks too. The main number just hangs up on you after like 2 hours of waiting. It's so frustrating!

•Right?? I don't understand how they expect people to resolve issues if you can't even talk to anyone.

•The phone system is definitely overwhelmed. Best times to call are usually first thing in the morning around 8am.

Yes you can call Washington ESD but the wait times are brutal. The main customer service line is 800-318-6022. They're open Monday-Friday 8am-4pm. Pro tip: don't call on Mondays or right after holidays - those are the worst days.

•I've tried that number so many times. Do they have any other numbers for specific issues?

•There's a separate number for technical issues with your account but for adjudication questions you need the main line.

I actually found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD when I was having the same problem. They basically call for you and connect you when they get an agent on the line. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•That sounds too good to be true. How much does it cost?

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They don't mention pricing upfront but for me it was worth it to finally talk to someone about my adjudication.

•Is this legit? I'm worried about giving my info to some random service.

The phone system is designed to handle high volume but it's still overwhelmed most days. Your best bet is calling right when they open at 8am. Have your Social Security number and claim details ready before you call.

•I tried calling at 8am sharp and still waited 3 hours before getting disconnected. This system is broken.

•I know it's frustrating. The adjudication process is backed up right now which is why so many people are trying to call.

ugh same problem here!! been trying to call for 2 weeks about my weekly claim that got rejected. the automated system just keeps saying call back later

•At least your weekly claim went through the system. Mine has been stuck for a month with no movement at all.

•thats even worse! have you tried the live chat thing on their website?

Carmen Lopez
•There's no live chat option that I can find. Just the contact form that never gets answered.

For adjudication issues specifically, calling is really your only option besides waiting it out. The online system won't show you what documents they need or what the hold-up is. When you do get through, ask specifically what your claim is pending on and if there's anything you can submit to move it along.

•That's exactly what I need to know! My account doesn't show any outstanding items but it's been stuck for so long.

•Same situation here. The lack of information is the worst part.

I had success with that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier. Took about 30 minutes and they got me connected to an agent who explained exactly why my claim was in adjudication. Turns out I needed to submit additional wage verification from my previous employer.

Carmen Lopez
•Really? How does it work exactly? Do they just keep calling until someone answers?

•Pretty much. You give them your callback number and they call you when they get an agent on the line. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•I'm still skeptical about these services but if it actually works...

The reason calling is so difficult right now is that Washington ESD has been dealing with a lot of complex cases and fraud prevention measures. This has created a backlog in both adjudication and phone support. They're working on improving the system but it takes time.

•That's great and all but people need their benefits now. We can't wait months for them to fix their system.

•I completely understand the frustration. Just trying to explain why the phones are so backed up.

Try calling the Olympia office direct sometimes they answer faster than the main line

•Do you have that number? I can't find any direct office numbers online.

Zoe Papanikolaou
•The direct office numbers don't handle individual claims anymore. Everything goes through the main customer service line now.

My cousin works for Washington ESD and she says the phone situation is crazy right now. They're getting like 10x normal call volume because of all the adjudication delays. She said most agents are spending their whole day just on phone calls instead of processing claims.
0 coins
Carmen Lopez
•That makes sense but it's creating a vicious cycle. More delays mean more calls which means less claim processing.

•They need to hire more people or fix their system. This is ridiculous.

Fatima Al-Suwaidi
•She said they are hiring but training takes time and they have to do background checks and everything.

I finally got through last week after trying for a month. Took 4 hours on hold but the agent was actually really helpful. She explained that my adjudication was because of a discrepancy between what my employer reported and what I put on my application. Got it cleared up in 10 minutes once I talked to someone.

Carmen Lopez
•See that's exactly what I need! But 4 hours on hold is just not realistic for most people.

•I know it's crazy. I had to take a day off work just to sit on hold.

•This is why I used Claimyr. Couldn't afford to spend a whole day on hold.

NOBODY should have to wait 4 hours to talk to someone about their unemployment benefits! This is our money that we paid into the system. Washington ESD needs to get their act together.

Has anyone tried calling right before they close at 4pm? Sometimes government offices are less busy then

•That's actually not a bad idea. Most people call in the morning so afternoon might be better.

I used to work at a call center and let me tell you the Washington ESD phone system is set up all wrong. They need better call routing and more staff. The agents are probably doing their best but the system is failing them too.
0 coins
Carmen Lopez
•That's an interesting perspective. So it's not necessarily the agents' fault?
0 coins
StarSailor}
•Exactly. Most of them probably want to help but they're overwhelmed and understaffed.

UPDATE: I tried Claimyr this morning after reading about it here and I'm now on hold with an actual Washington ESD agent! They called me back in about 45 minutes. This is amazing!

•They don't make you pay upfront which was nice. I'll update after I talk to the agent.

The problem is Washington ESD is still using phone technology from like 2005. They need to modernize everything not just hire more people.

•You're not wrong. The whole system could use an upgrade but that takes time and money.

my mom had to call about her standby claim and she said the key is calling exactly at 8:00:00am not 8:01 or 8:02. she got through in like 20 minutes

Just wanted to follow up - the agent I talked to through Claimyr was super helpful. Turns out my employer had reported my separation reason incorrectly and that's why I was in adjudication. She's sending me the forms to get it corrected. Would never have known this without calling!

Bottom line - yes you can call Washington ESD but be prepared for a long wait or try one of these callback services if you can't sit on hold all day. The important thing is getting your questions answered so you can move forward with your claim.
