Can I apply for Washington ESD unemployment if I'm pregnant?
I'm 6 months pregnant and just got laid off from my job at a retail store. I've never filed for unemployment before and I'm worried that being pregnant might disqualify me somehow. Can I still apply for Washington ESD benefits while pregnant? Do I need to tell them about my pregnancy when I file my claim? I'm really stressed about this whole situation and need to know what my options are.

Yes, you can absolutely apply for unemployment while pregnant! Being pregnant doesn't disqualify you from receiving Washington ESD benefits. The key requirements are that you're able and available for work, actively seeking employment, and meet the earnings requirements. Your pregnancy status doesn't factor into eligibility.

•Thank you so much! That's such a relief to hear. I was really worried they would deny me because of my pregnancy.

•I got unemployment when I was pregnant with my second child. No issues at all from Washington ESD.

You should definitely apply right away. The longer you wait, the more benefits you might lose. When you file your initial claim on the Washington ESD website, you don't need to specifically mention your pregnancy unless it affects your ability to work. Just make sure you can honestly answer yes to being able and available for work.

•Good point about applying quickly. I'll start the application today on the Washington ESD site.

•What if she goes on bed rest later? Does that affect her benefits?

•If a doctor puts her on bed rest, that could affect the 'able and available' requirement. She'd need to report that change to Washington ESD.

I was in a similar situation last year. Filed for unemployment at 7 months pregnant and had no problems. The only thing is you still have to do your job search requirements and be available for work. If you can't work due to medical reasons related to pregnancy, that's when it gets complicated.

•How did you handle the job search part? Were employers weird about interviewing someone who was obviously pregnant?

•Honestly, some were. But I just focused on remote work opportunities and was upfront about my availability. You still have to meet the job search requirements though.

Just to add - if you have trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about your specific situation, I recently discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com). They help you get connected to actual ESD agents without waiting on hold forever. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Might be helpful if you need to speak to someone directly about your pregnancy situation.

•That sounds really helpful! I've been dreading having to call Washington ESD because I heard the wait times are terrible.

•How much does that service cost though? I'm always skeptical of third-party services for government stuff.

•It's worth it if you really need to talk to someone. Way better than spending hours on hold or getting disconnected.

Make sure you're honest about your availability when you file your weekly claims. If you have prenatal appointments or other pregnancy-related commitments, you still need to be available for work the majority of the time.

•Good point. My doctor appointments are usually just an hour or two, so that shouldn't be a problem.

What about after the baby is born? Can you still get unemployment if you're taking care of a newborn?

Eli Wang
•After birth, if you're not able and available for work due to caring for your newborn, you wouldn't qualify for unemployment. That's different from being pregnant and still able to work.

•That makes sense. So basically pregnancy itself doesn't disqualify you, but if you can't work because of it, then you have issues.

I'm dealing with Washington ESD right now for a different issue and their customer service is AWFUL. Been trying to get through for weeks. Maybe I should try that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier.

•Yeah, definitely give Claimyr a shot. I was getting so frustrated with the busy signals and disconnections before I found them.

•Same here! I spent literally hours on hold just to get hung up on. So annoying.

Don't let anyone tell you that you can't get benefits because you're pregnant. That's discrimination and it's illegal. Washington ESD can't deny you benefits just because you're expecting.

Nora Brooks
•Thank you for saying that. I was really worried they might discriminate against me.

Quick question - do you need to have worked a certain amount before the pregnancy to qualify? I'm asking because my sister might be in a similar situation.

•You need to meet the standard work and earnings requirements like anyone else. Washington ESD looks at your work history over the past 12-15 months to determine eligibility.

•Got it, thanks. So it's not specifically about being pregnant, just the regular unemployment requirements.

File ASAP! I made the mistake of waiting a few weeks after I lost my job and missed out on benefits. Pregnancy has nothing to do with it - you earned those benefits by working.

•I'm definitely filing today. Thanks for the push!

When I was pregnant and on unemployment, I just made sure to keep good records of my job search activities. Washington ESD doesn't care that you're pregnant as long as you're meeting all the regular requirements.

Nora Brooks
•That's reassuring. I'll make sure to keep detailed records of everything.

•What kind of records do you need to keep for job searches?

•Date, company name, position applied for, how you applied. Washington ESD can audit your job search activities.

The most important thing is being honest on your weekly claims about your ability to work. If your pregnancy doesn't prevent you from working, then you're fine. If it does, you need to report that change immediately.

•Makes sense. Right now I feel fine and can definitely work, so I should be good.

Has anyone had issues with employers not wanting to hire pregnant women during interviews? I know it's illegal but it still happens.

•Yeah, I definitely felt like some employers weren't interested once they saw I was pregnant. But you still have to keep applying and documenting your job search for Washington ESD.

•That's so frustrating and unfair. But like you said, you still need to meet the job search requirements.

I used Claimyr when I had questions about my unemployment claim and it was a game changer. Actually got to talk to a human at Washington ESD instead of getting the runaround. Worth every penny.

•I'm definitely going to check that out if I run into any issues with my claim.

Don't overthink it - just apply like anyone else would. Being pregnant doesn't change the process at all.

•You're right, I was definitely overthinking it. Thanks everyone for the advice!
