Bottom line for your brother: file for unemployment benefits immediately, expect the job search to take 2-3 months during winter, but know that opportunities will increase significantly starting in March. Use this time to network, update skills, and prepare for when hiring picks up.
And remember, if he runs into issues with his unemployment claim during this busy period, don't just keep calling the regular ESD number endlessly. Tools like Claimyr exist specifically to help during high-volume times when getting through normally becomes nearly impossible.
The rates change annually based on the state's average weekly wage. So the amounts people are mentioning from previous years might be slightly different now.
Bottom line: you'll probably get a decent amount based on your previous salary, but the exact calculation depends on your specific earnings history. The determination letter will give you the definitive answer.
just want to say thanks to everyone who explained this stuff. I was panicking thinking I only had like 12 weeks or something. Knowing I have 26 weeks makes the job search feel less desperate.
One last tip - make sure you understand the difference between your benefit year (52 weeks) and your maximum duration (26 weeks). I've seen people get confused and think they get benefits for a full year.
tbh the whole overpayment system is broken. they make mistakes then expect us to pay for their errors. but unfortunately thats just how it is and fighting it is usually harder than just paying
Bottom line - don't ignore this. The consequences are real and they get worse with time. Either appeal if you think it's wrong, negotiate a payment plan you can afford, or look into hardship options. But do something.

been through this process twice and my advice is don't count on the money being there right away even after approval. sometimes there are payment delays or system issues. try to have at least some emergency savings if possible before relying completely on unemployment

•Unfortunately not everyone has savings when they get laid off unexpectedly. That's why people need unemployment in the first place.

•true, I just meant if you have any cushion at all it helps because the system isn't always perfectly reliable with timing

For what it's worth, Washington has some of the better unemployment benefits compared to other states. The weekly amounts are decent and the 26-week duration is pretty standard. Plus they've made the online system a lot better over the past few years.

•The online system is definitely better than it used to be but calling them is still a nightmare if you have problems.

•That's where services like Claimyr come in handy. I used them when I had adjudication issues and it saved me so much frustration trying to get through on the phone.
