I got fired for 'attendance issues' when I was actually dealing with a family emergency. Got my benefits after explaining the situation. Be prepared to tell your whole story if they ask.
Bottom line - getting fired doesn't automatically disqualify you from unemployment benefits in Washington. File your claim, be honest about what happened, and let Washington ESD make the determination. Don't talk yourself out of benefits you might be entitled to.
just make sure she applies asap if she's going to do it. there's usually a waiting period before benefits start and every week counts when you're unemployed
Welcome to the unemployment club nobody wants to be in! But seriously, the payment timing is pretty predictable once you get the hang of it. You'll be fine.
Thanks everyone for all the helpful info! This thread has been more useful than the actual Washington ESD website.
One more thing - if your earnings were really high, make sure you have all your W-2s and pay stubs ready when you file. They might ask for documentation to verify the maximum benefit amount.

The irony is that stagflation makes you need unemployment benefits more (because jobs are scarce) while simultaneously making those benefits less adequate (because everything costs more). It's like the worst possible combination for people trying to survive on UI.

•That's a perfect way to put it. I need the benefits more than ever but they help less than ever.

•Exactly. And there's no easy solution because the root problem is macroeconomic, not something Washington ESD can fix at the state level.

just want to say thanks to everyone sharing their experiences with this. I thought I was going crazy trying to make my UI benefits stretch during this inflation but it's clearly a widespread problem during stagflation periods

•Agreed, it's somewhat comforting to know it's not just personal budgeting failures but an actual economic phenomenon affecting all of us.
