One last thing - if you do need to contact Washington ESD by phone later and can't get through the regular way, that Claimyr service people mentioned really does work. I used it when I had questions about my weekly claim and it saved me hours of frustration.
One more tip - keep good records of all your unemployment payments throughout the year. Don't just rely on the 1099-G because sometimes there are discrepancies.
Thanks everyone for all the helpful info. I'm going to try to call Washington ESD tomorrow to set up tax withholding, and if I can't get through I'll check out that Claimyr service. Better late than never I guess.
Good plan! Even if you start withholding now, you'll still owe taxes on what you've already received, so start setting aside money for that too.
Yeah definitely try Claimyr if the regular phone lines don't work. Made my life so much easier when I needed to talk to someone at Washington ESD.
don't forget to file your weekly claims right away if you do get approved, even if the first payment is delayed. missing weekly claims can mess up your whole case
One last suggestion - if you end up needing to call Washington ESD multiple times during this process, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really does help cut through the phone line chaos. Saved me hours of redialing when I had questions about my claim.
Don't forget that your first payment might be delayed if you have any outstanding issues with previous claims or if you owe any overpayments. They'll often hold new benefits to offset old debts.
I used claimyr.com last month when my claim got stuck and it was honestly a lifesaver. Instead of spending hours on hold every day, I was able to get connected to an agent who explained exactly what was holding up my claim. Turned out to be a simple paperwork issue that took 5 minutes to resolve once I got the right person.

Thanks everyone for all the info in this thread. I was completely clueless about unemployment being taxed but now I know what to do with my 1099-G.

One more tip - if you can't afford to pay the taxes you owe because of unemployment income, the IRS has payment plan options available. Don't just ignore it.

•Good advice. I had to set up a payment plan last year and it was pretty straightforward online.
