Also just FYI - unemployment benefits are taxable income so don't forget about that when tax time comes around. You can have taxes withheld from your weekly payments if you want.
Just make sure you keep good records of everything - your work dates, wages, reason for separation, etc. Washington ESD might ask for documentation later and you want to have it ready.
The most important thing is to apply as soon as you become unemployed, even if you're not sure you qualify. You can't get benefits for weeks before you apply, so don't wait around trying to calculate everything perfectly.
Good point. I've been putting it off because I wasn't sure about the requirements, but I should probably just apply and see what happens.
Thanks everyone for all the helpful info! This thread definitely cleared up my confusion about the work requirements. Going to log into my account tonight and check my wage history, then probably apply this weekend.
And remember, if you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD and can't get through, that Claimyr service is still available. Sometimes it's worth it just to get real answers to specific questions about your situation.
I used Claimyr when I had questions about transitioning from PFL to unemployment benefits and it was super helpful. The rep I talked to knew exactly how to handle my situation and walked me through what to expect. Way better than trying to navigate the phone system alone.

Just want to emphasize - keep filing your weekly claims even if you think you might find work soon. You can't get retroactive benefits for weeks you didn't file, and you never know if a job offer might fall through.

•Good reminder. I'll make sure to stay on top of the weekly filings.

•This is so important! I skipped filing for 2 weeks when I thought I had a job lined up, then the offer got rescinded and I lost those benefit weeks forever.

Bottom line: 26 weeks maximum in Washington state, no current extensions, keep looking for work actively, and file every week. That's the reality right now in 2025.
