Good luck with your application! The Washington ESD system has improved a lot over the years. Most people get through the process without major issues as long as they follow the instructions and stay on top of their weekly claims.
One last tip - if you do need to call Washington ESD and are having trouble getting through, try calling right when they open or during lunch hours. Those tend to be less busy times. But honestly, that Claimyr service others mentioned sounds like a much better option than trying to get through yourself.
Thanks for the timing tip! I'll keep that in mind if I need to call. And yes, several people have mentioned Claimyr - definitely seems like a useful resource to know about.
My advice is to apply for disability as soon as possible if your doctor thinks you should. The process takes so long that the sooner you start, the better. You can figure out the unemployment stuff as you go.
Make sure you get copies of all your medical records before you apply. Social Security will want everything and it's easier if you have it organized ahead of time.
For anyone else reading this thread who's having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really does work. I used it again last week when I had questions about my job search requirements and got through within a few hours. Much better than the endless busy signals.
Just to circle back on getting help - if anyone else is struggling to reach Washington ESD by phone, I can't recommend Claimyr enough. Their website is claimyr.com and they've helped tons of people get through to resolve claim issues quickly.
Update: I successfully filed my initial claim this morning! It took about 40 minutes like someone mentioned. Now I just wait for the monetary determination and start filing weekly claims. Thanks again everyone!

One more tip - when you file online, make sure you answer all the questions completely and accurately. If you're unsure about something, it's better to explain too much than too little. You can always clarify later but incomplete information can cause delays.

•Good advice. I tend to be too brief in forms but I'll make sure to be thorough with this one.

Hope everything works out for you. The unemployment system isn't perfect but it's there for situations exactly like yours. You worked, you paid into it, and now you need it. That's how it's supposed to work.

•Thank you. It's reassuring to know that the system is designed to help people in my situation, even if it doesn't always feel that way.
