Update: I used Claimyr yesterday and was able to get through to an ESD agent in about 15 minutes. Changed my withholding to 10% federal and also asked about making a lump sum payment for taxes on benefits I've already received. The agent was really helpful and explained all my options.
Thanks everyone for all the helpful info. I'm definitely going to get my withholding changed and start setting aside money for taxes. Better to be prepared than get hit with a surprise bill!
Make sure you understand the difference between misconduct and just being unable to meet job requirements. Childcare emergencies often fall into the second category which is much better for your unemployment claim.
Just wanted to add that you should also file for other assistance programs like SNAP and WIC if you qualify. Don't rely on just unemployment while you're waiting for your claim to be processed.
Remember to file your claim as soon as possible after your last day of work. There's no waiting period in Washington but you want to get the process started right away to avoid any delays in payments.
If you're still unsure about your eligibility, you can always file an application and let Washington ESD determine if you qualify. They'll look at your actual wage records and let you know. There's no penalty for applying even if you don't end up qualifying.
Just want to add that if you have trouble reaching Washington ESD to ask about your specific situation, I had good luck with that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Got connected to an ESD agent in like 15 minutes instead of spending hours trying to call.

Just want to add that if you're denied benefits initially, you can always appeal the decision. I was denied at first because of a miscommunication about why I left my job, but I appealed and won.

•How long did the appeal process take?

•It took about 6 weeks total, but I eventually got all my back benefits paid out once I won the appeal.

Bottom line - just file your claim if you think you might be eligible. Washington ESD will determine your eligibility automatically and let you know. It's better to apply and find out than to assume you don't qualify and miss out on benefits you're entitled to.

•That's probably the best advice in this whole thread. I'm going to file my claim tomorrow. Thanks everyone for all the helpful information!

•Agreed, the worst they can say is no, but you might be pleasantly surprised.
