When to apply for Social Security if my FRA is March 2025? Timing first check delivery

I just turned 66 and 10 months, which means my Full Retirement Age (FRA) is March 2025. I want my first Social Security retirement payment to arrive exactly in March - not earlier or later. The SSA website says benefits are paid the month after they're due, and I've heard you should apply a few months before you want benefits to start. I'm confused about the exact timing though. If I want my first deposit to hit my bank account in March 2025, when exactly should I submit my application? Has anyone here timed this perfectly? I don't want to leave money on the table by applying too late, but I also don't want benefits to start before I reach my FRA.

Social Security recommends applying 3-4 months before you want benefits to begin. Since you want your first payment in March 2025, you should apply in November or December 2024. When you apply, you'll select February 2025 as your benefit start month, and then your first payment will arrive in March. Remember that SS pays a month behind - the February payment comes in March, March payment in April, etc.

Thank you! So I need to specifically request February as my start month on the application? I didn't realize I'd need to select the month before what I actually want.

my sister just did this whole process and it was a MESS. she applied 2 months before her FRA and they started her benefits early by accident and she got reduced benefit amount!!! took her 6 calls to fix it. make sure you double check everything

Oh no! That's exactly what I'm worried about. Did she eventually get it fixed? Did they make her pay back the early payments?

Here's the exact timeline you need to follow: 1. Apply 3 months before you want benefits to begin (so December 2024) 2. In your application, specify February 2025 as your benefit month 3. Your first payment (for February) will arrive in March 2025 Important: Social Security pays benefits in the month following the month for which they are due. So February benefits come in March, March benefits in April, etc. Also, if you were born on the 1st of the month, your benefits actually start the previous month. If not, your benefit month is as expected.

This is super helpful, thank you. I was born on the 19th, so I guess the regular rules apply. Just to confirm - when I apply, I'll actually see a field where I can select February 2025 as my benefit month?

I planned my retirement last year and let me tell you, I wish someone had warned me about all the little details! When you file online, there's a specific question that asks when you want your benefits to start. Make ABSOLUTELY SURE you select February 2025 if you want the payment in March. Also, don't get confused if they ask about "month of entitlement" - that's the same thing as your benefit start month. Good luck!!!

Has anyone tried using Claimyr to get through to SSA on the phone? I had the same questions about benefit timing and couldn't get through on the 800 number for days. Someone at my church recommended claimyr.com and they got me connected to an agent in under 15 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU showing how it works. It was actually worth it to talk to someone directly about my specific situation instead of guessing.

I've tried calling a few times but keep getting disconnected after waiting 45+ minutes. I'll keep trying though.

When I applied last year I did it 4 months before FRA and everything went perfectly. The online application is actually pretty straightforward. One thing to know: if you're still working when you apply, make sure you're under the earnings limit or your benefits could be reduced even if you start at FRA. Also check if you qualify for 6 months of retroactive benefits before FRA - some people do! But that would reduce your benefit amount.

I retired completely last year, so no earnings issues. And I definitely don't want retroactive benefits - I specifically want to start right at my FRA to get my full benefit amount. Thanks for mentioning this though!

I tried to time mine perfectly last year and SSA still messed it up. They started my benefits a month AFTER I requested. Had to go to the field office in person to fix it. Make sure you print confirmation of everything and follow up if your online account doesn't show what you expected within a couple weeks of applying.

One more important detail: Social Security benefits are paid on different days of the month depending on your birth date. If you were born on the 1st-10th, you're paid on the second Wednesday; 11th-20th, third Wednesday; 21st-31st, fourth Wednesday. So your specific March payment date will depend on your actual birthday.

I was born on the 19th, so sounds like I'll get paid on the third Wednesday of each month. That's good to know for budgeting - thanks!

After reading all the comments, let me clarify the most accurate approach: 1. Apply in December 2024 (3 months before) 2. Specify February 2025 as your benefit start month 3. Expect your first payment in March 2025 4. Since you were born on the 19th, payments will arrive on the 3rd Wednesday of each month Follow up within 2 weeks of applying if your MySocialSecurity account doesn't show your application status. This is the most reliable way to time your benefits exactly as you want.

This is perfect - thank you for summarizing everything so clearly! I'll mark my calendar to apply in December and make sure to specify February as my start month.
