Social Security sent email about new messages but nothing shows up - phishing scam?
Just got an email saying "You have a new message at my Social Security. You may log in to your account to view new Message Center items." But when I logged in, there was absolutely nothing new in my message center! Has anyone else experienced this? Could this be some kind of system glitch? The email didn't ask for any personal information or have suspicious links, but I'm still concerned. Should I report this to SSA somehow?

•That's somewhat reassuring! Wonder if they're having technical issues with their notification system...

ALWAYS be suspicious of ANY emails claiming to be from Social Security!!! They are notorious for scammers trying to get your personal info. Even if this one didn't ask for anything, it could be testing to see if you'll click links from them in the future. My neighbor lost her entire bank account after clicking a "Social Security" email last year!!

•Oh no, that's terrible about your neighbor! This email didn't have any links to click though - it just said to log in to my account (which I did by going directly to ssa.gov, not through the email). I'm more worried it's some kind of system error or maybe they're planning to send me something important.

This is probably just a timing issue. The notification system sometimes sends alerts before the message is actually processed into your account. I've experienced this several times. Wait 24-48 hours and check again. The message will likely appear. SSA's systems don't always sync up perfectly between the notification triggers and actual message delivery.

•That makes a lot of sense - thank you! I'll check again tomorrow and see if anything shows up by then.

I had this exact same problem last week. I tried calling SSA to ask about it but of course got stuck on hold forever. I finally got through using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of the usual 2+ hour wait. The agent told me it was a known system issue where notifications are being sent prematurely or erroneously. They're working on fixing it. You can see how the service works in this video: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU - saved me so much frustration!

•Thanks for the tip! I might try that if I keep getting these phantom notifications. Was the SSA agent able to tell if there was actually a message trying to come through for you?

•The agent checked my account while I was on the phone and confirmed there weren't any pending messages or alerts that should have triggered the email. He said it's happening to a lot of people right now - their email notification system is experiencing some kind of technical problem where it's sending alerts when it shouldn't.

Social Security Administration IT specialist here. This is a known issue with our notification system that began approximately two weeks ago. The system is erroneously sending email alerts even when no new messages have been posted to accounts. Our technical team is working to resolve it. There's no security concern, and you don't need to report it. We apologize for any confusion this has caused. Just to be clear, you should always access your my Social Security account directly through ssa.gov rather than clicking links in emails.

•Thank you so much for the official explanation! That's very reassuring. Any idea when this might be fixed?

•We're expecting it to be resolved in the next system update, which is scheduled for the end of this month. In the meantime, you can safely ignore these notifications if you log in and don't see any new messages.

Is anyone else worried about this?? I mean what if there ARE important messages but they're not showing up?? I'm on SSDI and terrified I'm going to miss something important about my benefits. What if they're trying to notify us about reviews or something we need to respond to but the system is broken??? This is making my anxiety so much worse...

•There's no need to worry about missing important messages. Even if there are notification issues, SSA still sends official correspondence through postal mail for anything that requires action or response. The online message center is supplementary, not the primary method of communication for time-sensitive matters. Your benefits won't be affected by this technical glitch.

Just as an update for everyone - this issue was mentioned in the SSA's system status update posted yesterday. They acknowledged the erroneous notification emails and indicated they're working on a fix. You can check system status anytime at https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/system-status.html to see if there are known issues with the portal or messaging system.

It's reassuring to see the official explanation from the IT specialist and know it's a widespread issue they're working on. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences - it really helps to know we're not alone in dealing with this glitch. I'll just keep ignoring the emails until they get it fixed at the end of the month.

I'll definitely bookmark that system status page someone mentioned too - seems like a useful resource for future reference.

This is such a relief to read! I got one of these emails three days ago and have been checking my account multiple times daily wondering if I'm missing something important. I even called the main SSA number but gave up after being on hold for over an hour. It's really reassuring to hear from the IT specialist that this is a known issue and there's no security concern. I'll stop obsessing over it now and just wait for the fix at the end of the month. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - this community is so helpful!

•I'm so glad this thread exists too! I just joined this community after experiencing the exact same thing - got the notification email two days ago and have been worried sick that I missed something important about my benefits. It's such a relief to know it's just a technical glitch and not something I need to stress about. The waiting on hold with SSA is the worst - I tried calling yesterday and gave up after 45 minutes. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences here, especially the official confirmation from the IT specialist. Makes me feel much better about just ignoring these phantom emails until they get it sorted out!

•Welcome to the community! I'm new here too and had the exact same experience yesterday - got the notification email, panicked a bit, logged in to find nothing there. This has been happening to me for about a week now! I've gotten three of these phantom notification emails and each time I log in expecting to see something important, but there's absolutely nothing there. At first I thought maybe it was a phishing attempt, but the emails were definitely coming from the legitimate SSA domain and didn't contain any suspicious links. I'm so relieved to read the official explanation from the IT specialist - it's reassuring to know this is a widespread technical issue and not something I need to worry about. I was starting to get really anxious that I might be missing critical information about my Social Security benefits. •Welcome to the community! I totally understand that panic - I had the exact same reaction when I got my first phantom notification email a few days ago. Being on benefits makes you extra cautious about missing anything important, so when you see that notification and then find nothing there, it's natural to assume the worst. I was convinced something was seriously wrong with my account too! This thread has been such a blessing for all of us dealing with this glitch.
