Social Security benefit amount lower than expected - when will 2024 earnings be calculated?

Has anyone dealt with this situation? I worked until November 2024 and applied for my Social Security retirement to start in May 2025 when I turn 67 (my full retirement age). I just got my approval letter yesterday and noticed the monthly benefit amount is about $180 less than what the SSA calculator estimated. Looking at my earnings record online, I realized my 2024 wages aren't showing up yet in the system. I earned roughly $72,000 in 2024 before retiring. Will SSA automatically recalculate my benefit once my 2024 earnings are posted, or do I need to contact them? And any idea when 2024 earnings typically get added to their system? I was counting on that higher amount for my budget planning. I've tried calling twice but got disconnected after waiting over an hour each time.

Yes, the SSA will automatically recalculate your benefit once your 2024 earnings are processed. This typically happens around September-October 2025 after employers submit all W-2s and self-employment tax returns are processed. You'll receive any increase retroactively to your first month of entitlement. The adjustment happens without you needing to do anything as long as your earnings were from W-2 employment (if self-employed, make sure your tax return gets filed on time).

Thank you! That's a relief to hear it'll happen automatically. So if I understand correctly, once they add my 2024 earnings around Sept/Oct, I'll get a lump sum payment for the difference going back to May when my benefits started?

The same thing happened to my husband! He worked through 2024 and started benefits in January 2025. His payment was like $200 less than expected and we were worried. But sure enough, in October they sent him a letter saying his benefit increased AND they gave him back pay for the months he'd been getting the lower amount. Be patient!

Not always automatic tho!! My uncle had to CALL them when his 2023 earnings didn't get added by Nov 2024! They blamed his employer for late reporting but turns out SSA just didn't process it right. Don't just sit back and wait forever.

Your situation is actually very common. SSA calculates your benefit based on your highest 35 years of earnings, adjusted for inflation. When your 2024 earnings are processed (usually by late summer/early fall 2025), SSA will automatically recompute your benefit if those earnings increase your monthly amount. Two technical points: 1. The recomputation is called an Automatic Earnings Reappraisal Operation (AERO) 2. If your 2024 earnings replace a lower year in your top 35, you'll see an increase You'll receive retroactive payments back to your entitlement date (May 2025). No need to contact them unless it hasn't happened by December 2025.

Thanks for the detailed explanation! I didn't know about the AERO process. Is there any way to see which years are currently being used in my top 35? I'm curious if 2024 will definitely increase my benefit or if it might not be high enough to replace one of my existing years.

I went through this EXACT thing! Was missing almost $250/month because my last year of work wasn't counted. SSA is ALWAYS behind on processing recent earnings. Waited 7 months with the lower amount until suddenly got a deposit for $1,700+ (the back pay) and a letter explaining my new higher monthly amount. BUT trying to call SSA is IMPOSSIBLE these days!! I tried for WEEKS and either got disconnected or waited 2+ hours. Finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me a callback from SSA within 2 hours instead of waiting on hold forever. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU Totally worth it for peace of mind to confirm everything was processing correctly with my benefits.

is that service really legit? seems weird to pay someone else just to talk to social security. what info do they need from you?

It's definitely legit - they just help you get a callback instead of waiting on hold. You don't give them any personal info about your SS account or anything like that. They just help navigate the phone system to get you in the callback queue faster than doing it yourself.

Thanks everyone for the helpful information! I feel much better knowing this is normal and will eventually be corrected. I'll watch for the adjustment in the fall and follow up if nothing changes by December.

Glad we could help! One more tip - when the adjustment happens, you'll receive a mailed notice called an AERO notice explaining the change in your benefit amount. It's a good idea to keep this with your important papers as it shows the recalculation of your benefit amount.

My neighbor said to check that your employer actually reported your 2024 wages correctly! His company messed up and it took forever to fix!!! Maybe call your old HR department just to make SURE everything was submitted right??

That's a good point. I'll double-check with my former employer to make sure everything was reported correctly. Better safe than sorry!

The WHOLE SYSTEM is designed to pay you LESS than you deserve!!! I've been fighting with them for 2 YEARS about my benefit calculation and they keep giving me the runaround. They're HOPING you won't notice or follow up so they can keep underpaying you. DOCUMENT EVERYTHING and keep calling until they fix it!!!

While I understand your frustration, this specific situation is actually a normal part of SSA's annual processing cycle. They're not intentionally underpaying - they simply can't include earnings that haven't been reported and processed yet. The system is designed to automatically adjust benefits once those earnings are processed, typically in the latter part of the following year.
