Medicare billing me for months before I enrolled - SSA says they need to fix it. Help!

I just got my first Medicare bill and I'm so confused. They're charging me for months before I even signed up! I started Medicare on January 1st this year, but the bill shows premiums starting from last October. I called Medicare to fix it, but they told me I have to talk to Social Security instead. Has anyone else dealt with this? Any advice on how to get this sorted out?

Ugh, classic government bureaucracy. You're definitely not alone in this mess. I had a similar issue when I first signed up. Here's what you need to do: 1. Call the Social Security Administration (SSA) and explain the situation clearly. 2. Have all your paperwork ready - your Medicare card, the incorrect bill, and any other relevant documents. 3. Be patient but persistent. You might need to speak to a supervisor if the first person can't help. 4. Ask them to adjust your Medicare start date in their system. 5. Request a written confirmation of the change. 6. Follow up with Medicare after a few weeks to ensure they received the updated info from SSA. Good luck! The system is a nightmare, but keep at it and you'll get it sorted.

This is solid advice 💯 I wish I had known this when I first dealt with Medicare. Took me months to fix a similar issue!

Quick question - do you know if theres a specific department at SSA that handles these Medicare date issues? Or just the general customer service line?

In my experience, the general line should be able to handle it. But if they seem confused, ask to speak with someone in the Medicare enrollment department specifically.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone without waiting forever. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the link: https://www.claimyr.com

Sounds like a scam. Why would you pay $20 just to make a phone call? 🤔

I get the skepticism, but after spending hours on hold multiple times, it was worth it to me. Time is money, you know? But yeah, do your own research.

How long did it take for them to get someone on the line for you?

It took about an hour and a half, but I didn't have to sit there listening to hold music the whole time. They called me when an agent was on the line.

This happened to my mom too! She ended up having to pay for those extra months 😡 Make sure you don't let them bully you into paying for time you weren't even enrolled!

Oh no, that's terrible! I'm definitely going to fight this. There's no way I'm paying for months I wasn't even eligible for Medicare.

Pro tip: keep a log of every person you talk to, including their name, ID number (if they have one), and what they tell you. It'll help if you need to escalate the issue later.

This! 👆 Documentation is key when dealing with any government agency. I learned that the hard way.

have you tried reaching out to your local congressperson's office? They often have staff dedicated to helping constituents with federal issues like this. Might be worth a shot if SSA gives you the runaround

I hadn't even thought of that! Great idea, I'll look into it if I can't get anywhere with SSA directly.
