Can I apply for Social Security survivor benefits online or do I need to call SSA?
My husband passed away last month, and I'm trying to figure out how to apply for survivor benefits. I'm 62 and not ready for full retirement yet, but I know I'm eligible for something now. Can I just do the application online through my Social Security account, or do I have to call and make an appointment? The local office is an hour away, and their phone is always busy. I've looked through the SSA website, but I'm getting confused about whether survivor applications can be done online or not. Has anyone gone through this process recently?

I'm so sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, you cannot apply for survivor benefits online. The SSA requires you to either call to schedule an appointment or go in person. This is different from retirement benefits which can be done online. They need to verify more documents for survivor claims.

•Thank you for the information. That's what I was afraid of. Do you know what documents I need to bring when I go? I have his death certificate, our marriage license, and both our Social Security cards. Is there anything else?

•Same here when my husband passed. The whole process is awful when you're already grieving.

You'll need his death certificate, your marriage certificate, both Social Security cards, your birth certificate, and your most recent tax returns. Also bring any information about his earnings if he was still working. If either of you were married before, bring divorce decrees too.

•Thank you! I don't have my birth certificate handy - will need to order that. Do they need the original or will a copy work? And we were both previously married, so I'll dig up those divorce papers too.

I went through this last year and it was a NIGHTMARE trying to get through on the phone. I finally gave up and drove to the office just to make an appointment, only to be told I needed to call! Circular madness!!! The whole system is BROKEN.

•I had the same circular problem! It's like they deliberately make it hard to claim benefits that you're entitled to. And when you're grieving it's the last thing you need to deal with.

I used a service called Claimyr when I needed to apply for my survivor benefits last year. It got me through to a SSA agent in about 15 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU - it helped me schedule my appointment without the endless busy signals and disconnections. Made the process much less stressful during an already difficult time.

•Thank you for suggesting this. I'll check out the video. At this point I'm willing to try anything that makes this process easier.

BTW you're smart to apply now even though you're not at your FRA yet. A lot of people don't realize you can take reduced survivor benefits at 60 (or 50 if disabled) and then switch to your own retirement at FRA if it's higher. Or vice versa!

•That's an excellent point. Unlike regular retirement benefits, survivor benefits can be taken as early as age 60 with a reduction. And the really important strategy here is that you can switch between survivor and your own retirement benefits to maximize your lifetime payout - one of the few remaining claiming strategies after the 2015 law changes.

just wanted to mention that they will need originals or certified copies of all documents, not photocopies. learned that the hard way and had to reschedule my appointment!

•Oh that's really good to know! I'll make sure to order certified copies of everything. Thanks for the tip - would have hated to make the hour drive just to be turned away.

I'm going through this exact process right now. Just had my appointment last week. Make sure to also bring proof of your husband's death benefit payment from the funeral home if they received the $255 payment directly. And if you had any children under 18 with him, bring their birth certificates too as they might qualify for benefits until they graduate high school. The agent I talked to was actually really helpful once I finally got an appointment.

•That's good to hear that the agent was helpful. We didn't have children together, but I did pay the funeral home directly and they said something about applying for that $255 payment. I'll check with them about the status of that before my appointment.

dose anyone know how long it takes to get the first check? i waited like 6 weeks after my appointment

•It typically takes 2-4 weeks after your application is approved, but it can sometimes take longer if they need to verify additional information or during busy periods. Six weeks is longer than average but not unusual.

Make sure you ask about retroactive benefits too! They don't always tell you that you can get up to 6 months of retroactive survivor benefits from your application date IF you're past your FRA. They never volunteer this information!

•That's partially correct. For survivor benefits, you can get up to 6 months of retroactive benefits regardless of your age. For regular retirement benefits, retroactive benefits only apply if you're past FRA, and then it's up to 6 months. But it's absolutely true they don't always volunteer this information.

Thanks everyone for all this helpful information. I've called SSA three times today and can't get through. I'm going to try that Claimyr service to get an appointment scheduled. I've gathered all the documents mentioned and ordered certified copies of my birth certificate and our divorce papers. I'll update once I get an appointment and go through the process in case it helps someone else.
