Approved for regular Social Security while my SSDI claim is pending - will I get disability backpay?
I'm so confused about what's happening with my benefits! I filed for SSDI back in February after my car accident left me unable to work (spinal issues). I just got a call yesterday from SSA saying my disability claim is still in 'redetermination' whatever that means, but they're going to start paying me regular Social Security retirement benefits beginning next month (January 2025). The lady said once my disability gets approved, they'll switch me over to the disability payments which would be about $875 more per month than the retirement. Is this normal procedure? I'm 62 and technically eligible for early retirement but I never applied for that - only disability. She said something about 'provisional benefits' but wasn't clear. Will I still get backpay from February when I first applied for disability? I'm grateful to start getting some income but I really need those disability benefits and the backpay would help with all the medical bills that have piled up. Anyone dealt with this before?

Yes, this is completely normal and actually good news! What's happening is the SSA is approving you for Retirement Insurance Benefits (RIB) while your Disability Insurance Benefits (DIB) claim is still being processed. Since you're over 62, you qualify for retirement, so they're giving you that in the meantime. When your disability is approved, they'll switch you to the higher SSDI amount. As for backpay - yes, you'll still get disability backpay from your original application date in February, minus any retirement benefits you received in the meantime. The difference between your retirement amount and disability amount will be paid to you for each month going back to your application date (or established onset date if that's different).

Thank you so much for explaining! When you say they'll subtract the retirement benefits from my backpay, does that mean they'll take back the retirement payments they're giving me now? I'm trying to budget and don't want any surprises.

This happened to my brother last year! Took them 14 months to approve his disability claim but they at least gave him the early retirement while he waited. The backpay was weird though - they didn't just give him all the money at once. They split it into 3 payments spread out over several months. Something about their payment system not handling large backpay amounts all at once.

Wow, 14 months? I'm already 10 months in and losing my mind waiting. Did your brother have to do anything special to make sure he got the backpay correctly?

Oh no, I didn't even think about Medicare implications. I'll have to ask about that specifically when I talk to them next. Thanks for the heads up!

What you're describing is a very standard procedure the SSA uses when someone might qualify for both retirement and disability. They call it \

Thank you for such a detailed explanation! I feel much better now. I was worried taking the retirement might somehow hurt my disability case, but it sounds like this is actually standard procedure.

I went through this exact situation in 2023. Filed for disability after a stroke, got early retirement while waiting, then eventually got approved for SSDI. Getting someone at Social Security to explain how the backpay worked was IMPOSSIBLE - every time I called, I'd be on hold for hours only to get disconnected or told different information.I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual person at SSA who could explain everything. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU - basically gets you to the front of the SSA phone queue. Was worth it because I finally got someone to explain exactly how my backpay would work and when to expect it.

YOUR GETTING SCREWED!!! Social security is doing this to avoid paying u the full backpay!!! THEY DID THIS TO ME TOO!!!!

This is incorrect information. The SSA isn't trying to avoid paying backpay. They're actually helping by providing some income while the disability determination is made. OP will still get all backpay they're entitled to - it will just be the difference between retirement and disability amounts for those months.

Did your disability examiner tell you how long redetermination might take? My claim sat in that status for 3 months before moving forward. My understanding is they're checking to make sure all the medical evidence supports your claim before making a decision. Having them offer retirement benefits in the meantime is usually a good sign - means they recognize you need income support.

No, she was really vague about timeline. Just said it was 'still being processed' and couldn't give me any estimate. I've sent in all my medical records from 3 different specialists plus the hospital records from my surgeries. Not sure what else they need at this point.

One thing I learned the hard way - make sure you keep documentation of EVERYTHING. When my disability was finally approved after getting retirement, there was confusion about the backpay calculation. I had to go back and forth with them multiple times to get it corrected. Write down every person you talk to, the date, what they told you. The SSA systems don't always communicate well between departments.

This is excellent advice! I had the same experience with my backpay calculation. Had to call multiple times and each representative gave slightly different information. Documentation was the only thing that saved me from getting shortchanged.

I'm going through something similar right now! Filed for SSDI in March after a workplace injury and just got approved for early retirement benefits while my disability claim is still pending. The waiting is so stressful, especially when you're dealing with medical bills and no income. One thing my case worker mentioned that might help you - they said the "redetermination" status usually means they're doing a final review of all your medical evidence before making a decision. In my case, they requested one additional medical report from my orthopedic surgeon before moving forward. Have they asked you for any additional documentation recently? Also, I'd definitely take everyone's advice about keeping detailed records. I started a simple spreadsheet tracking every phone call, who I spoke with, and what they told me. It's already come in handy twice when I got conflicting information from different representatives. Hang in there - at least getting some income while you wait is better than nothing, and it sounds like you're on the right track to get approved based on what others have shared here!

•Thank you for sharing your experience! It's really reassuring to hear from someone going through the same thing right now. They haven't asked me for any additional documentation recently, but now I'm wondering if I should proactively reach out to my doctors to make sure SSA has everything they need. Did your case worker give you any timeline estimate after they got that additional medical report from your surgeon? I'm definitely going to start that spreadsheet - seems like everyone who's been through this process recommends keeping detailed records. The waiting really is the hardest part, especially when you're trying to manage finances with reduced income. Thanks for the encouragement!

I'm dealing with a very similar situation right now! Filed for SSDI in January after a work injury left me with chronic back problems, and just last week SSA approved me for early retirement benefits while my disability claim is still under review. Like you, I never applied for retirement - only disability - but they explained this is their standard procedure when someone qualifies for both. The waiting is absolutely nerve-wracking, especially when you're dealing with medical expenses and lost income. What helped ease my anxiety was understanding that accepting the retirement benefits won't hurt my disability case at all - it's actually SSA's way of providing some financial support while they finish processing the more complex disability determination. I've been reading through all the advice here about keeping detailed records, and I can't stress this enough. I started documenting every phone call and conversation after getting conflicting information from different representatives early on. It's already saved me confusion twice. One question - have you considered getting a written summary of your current benefit status? When I asked for this during my last call, they were able to email me a brief explanation of what benefits I'm currently receiving and what to expect when/if my disability gets approved. It helped me feel more in control of the situation. Hang in there! The fact that they're providing retirement benefits while you wait seems like a positive sign that they recognize your need for support.

•Thanks for sharing your experience, Javier! It's so helpful to hear from someone who just went through this process. I'm definitely going to ask for that written summary you mentioned - having something in writing would really help me understand exactly where things stand. The conflicting information from different reps has been driving me crazy, so I'll start documenting everything from now on. Did they give you any sense of how long the disability review typically takes once you're already receiving the retirement benefits? I'm trying to manage my expectations while also planning for when the higher SSDI payments might kick in. Really appreciate the reassurance that accepting retirement won't hurt my disability case!
