TWC waiting week payment after exhausting benefits - what happens to my final $788?
I'm down to my final payment request for my TWC benefits. My account shows I have $788 remaining, but I typically receive $754 after taxes. I'm wondering what happens with the waiting week payment? Will I actually get the full $788, or will it be less because of the waiting week they held back at the beginning? Will I get that waiting week payment separately after my benefits are exhausted to zero? I'm trying to budget for next month and need to know exactly what to expect for this final payment.

i think u only get the waiting week when u go back to work for 6 weeks full time or something. they dont just give it to u when ur benefits run out

•Really? I thought they just held the first week and then paid it at the end. So I might not get that money at all?

The waiting week works differently than what you're thinking. You have to return to full-time work for 6 consecutive weeks and then request the waiting week payment. It doesn't automatically pay out when you exhaust benefits.

•Oh I had no idea! So if I don't find a job right away, I might never get that waiting week money?

Just to clarify since there seems to be some confusion: For your final payment, you'll receive whatever amount remains in your benefit balance, up to your regular weekly benefit amount. If you have $788 left and normally get $754 after taxes, you'll likely receive your regular payment amount one last time. Regarding the waiting week: You're correct that TWC holds back your first week as a "waiting week." However, to receive that payment, you must: 1. Return to full-time work 2. Work for at least 6 weeks 3. Specifically request the waiting week payment after those 6 weeks The waiting week is not automatically paid when you exhaust benefits. You'll need to find new employment and then follow the process to claim it.

•Thank you for explaining so clearly! So my final payment will just be my regular amount, and I'll only get that waiting week if I find a job and work 6+ weeks. Guess I need to adjust my budget then.

I went through this last year and was SO FRUSTRATED because nobody told me about the waiting week rules! I exhausted my benefits and thought they would automatically add the waiting week, but NOPE. When I finally found work again, I almost forgot to request it after my 6 weeks. Make sure you mark your calendar!

•Thanks for the warning! I'll definitely make a note to request it when I find work. Did you just call the regular TWC number to request yours?

When I was trying to get my waiting week payment, I couldn't get through on the TWC phones AT ALL. I tried for days but kept hitting busy signals and getting disconnected. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to TWC in about 25 mins. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh. Worth it so I could get my waiting week payment processed correctly.

•I actually used Claimyr too! The regular TWC line kept disconnecting me after waiting for like 2 hours. With Claimyr I got through pretty fast and didn't have to keep calling back.

•Thanks for the tip! I'm bookmarking that site for when I need to contact them about my waiting week.

•If the remaining balance is $788 and their regular weekly benefit amount (after taxes) is $754, they'll just receive $754 one last time. TWC only pays up to your weekly benefit amount, even if your remaining balance is slightly higher.

OK so TECHNICALLY the waiting week is still YOURS but TWC makes it nearly IMPOSSIBLE to claim it!!! They KNOW most people never go back and request it after finding work. It's just another way they KEEP YOUR MONEY!!! I bet MILLIONS of dollars in waiting weeks never get paid out because of this ridiculous 6-week work requirement!!! So frustrating!!

•While the system isn't perfect, the 6-week work requirement is designed to encourage reemployment. The waiting week policy has been part of Texas unemployment for years - it's not designed to keep your money, but rather to verify you've successfully returned to the workforce before paying that additional week.

•It's still a BARRIER designed to make it harder to get YOUR money! Why not just pay it automatically when you report 6 weeks of work? Instead you have to REMEMBER to request it and navigate their horrible phone system! It's intentionally difficult!

For your planning purposes, here's exactly what will happen with your final payment: 1. You'll receive your regular weekly benefit amount ($754 after taxes) one last time 2. Your claim will then show as exhausted 3. If you're still unemployed, you should immediately file for EB (Extended Benefits) if they're currently available in Texas 4. Remember to continue your work search activities (minimum 3 per week) even during the transition Don't forget that once you do find employment, you need to work for 6 consecutive weeks and then specifically request the waiting week payment. Mark your calendar with a reminder as many people forget this step.

•Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! I wasn't aware of Extended Benefits - I'll look into whether those are available right now. And I'll definitely set a reminder about the waiting week for when I do find work.
