TWC tax form 1099-G for early 2024 unemployment - will they mail it automatically?

I was collecting Texas unemployment for about 8 weeks during January-March 2024 after my construction job ended. Now I'm trying to get my tax stuff organized early (for once lol). Will TWC automatically mail me some kind of tax form showing how much unemployment I received? Is it a W2 or something else? And when should I expect to get it? Just want to make sure I don't miss anything important in the mail since I moved to a different apartment in May.

Yes, TWC will send you a 1099-G form, NOT a W-2. They usually mail them out by the end of January 2025. You need to make sure your address is updated in the TWC portal so it goes to the right place. If you've moved, login to your TWC account RIGHT NOW and update your mailing address!!! The 1099-G shows all your unemployment benefits which count as TAXABLE INCOME. I learned that the hard way last year when I owed a bunch to the IRS because I didn't have any taxes withheld from my benefits.

Thanks for the quick answer! I just logged into my TWC account and updated my address. Didn't even think about that. Do they also send it electronically or just by mail?

TWC will provide you with Form 1099-G for your tax filing. This form reports the total unemployment compensation paid to you during 2024. You should receive it by January 31, 2025. You have three options for getting your 1099-G: 1. Mail - sent to the address on file with TWC 2. Electronic - you can access it in your TWC online account 3. Request a reprint - if you don't receive it I recommend checking your online account in late January. You can print it directly from there without waiting for mail. Also, make sure any taxes you wanted withheld were actually withheld - you can verify this on the form.

Oh perfect! I didn't realize I could just get it online. That's much easier than waiting for mail. I'm pretty sure I did ask for taxes to be withheld when I applied, but I'll double check that on the form.

Same thing happened to me! I ended up having to file an extension because the 1099-G came so late and I needed it for my tax guy.

Quick question related to this - I'm still on unemployment from 2024 (benefits haven't exhausted yet). Will my 1099-G include payments through December 31 only, or will it somehow include January 2025 payments too? I'm confused about the cutoff date for tax reporting.

The 1099-G will only include unemployment benefits paid to you during the 2024 calendar year (January 1 - December 31, 2024). Any benefits you receive in January 2025 will be reported on next year's 1099-G form. The reporting is based on when you actually received the payments, not when you requested them or when the weeks of unemployment occurred.

I had this same question last year and called TWC about it. I waited on hold for THREE HOURS before getting disconnected. Then tried again the next day and same thing. Their phone system is completely useless when it comes to getting actual help. I ended up having to drive to a Workforce Center just to ask this simple question.

That's why I've been using Claimyr to reach TWC agents. It got me through to an actual person in less than 30 minutes when I needed clarification on my tax forms. Their system calls TWC for you and then connects you when they get through. Changed my life after spending days trying to get through on my own. There's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh or check out their website at claimyr.com. Totally worth it when you actually need to talk to someone at TWC.

Thanks everyone for the helpful responses! I updated my address in the TWC portal and now I know to look for the 1099-G at the end of January both online and in mail. Since I only collected unemployment for a couple months, I'm hoping the tax impact won't be too bad. Does anyone know if I can calculate approximately how much I'll owe based on the benefits I received?

You can estimate your tax liability by looking at your total benefits and your tax bracket. For rough calculations: - If your total UI benefits were $4,000 and you're in the 12% tax bracket, you'd owe about $480 - If you had 10% federal tax withheld, that would be $400 already paid Check your payment history in your TWC account to see if taxes were withheld. The withholding appears as a separate line item on each payment.

One time I never got my 1099G in the mail and when I called TWC they said it was returned as undeliverable even though I hadn't moved!! I had to request a new one and it delayed my tax filing by weeks. Definitely check your online account first!

This EXACT thing happened to me too! Even though my address was correct, somehow the post office returned it. So annoying. The online version is definitely more reliable.

I just remembered something I learned from my tax preparer last year - if you happen to receive unemployment in two different states (like if you moved mid-year), you'll get separate 1099-Gs from each state's unemployment office. Just mentioning in case anyone had benefits from another state before Texas.

Good to know! I was only on Texas unemployment, but that's helpful info for others reading this thread. I'm learning so much about this process - thanks again to everyone for all the tips!
