TWC denied benefits showing only one employer - new to Texas & confused about appeal
So frustrated right now! I moved to Texas about a year ago from Michigan and recently lost my job. I applied for unemployment and just got a denial letter in the mail that only shows ONE of my employers from the last 6 months. I worked at Amazon warehouse for 3 months and then at a local restaurant for 4 months before being laid off. The TWC determination letter only mentions the restaurant job and says I don't have enough wages to qualify. I KNOW I should qualify if they counted both jobs! Do I need to appeal this? Is there a special process for someone who moved from another state? The letter gives me 14 days to respond but I'm already a week in because it sat in my mailbox while I was staying with my sister. Any help would be really appreciated because my savings are almost gone.

Yes, you definitely need to appeal this determination! When you file an appeal, make sure to specifically state that you had another employer (Amazon) that wasn't included in your base period wages. Include any documentation you have from that job - paystubs, W-2, or employment verification. Since you moved from another state, TWC might not have all your wage information automatically. You'll need to file the appeal within the 14-day deadline (which is crucial), and then separately contact TWC to make sure they have your complete work history. Did you mention the Amazon job when you initially filed?

•Thank you! I'm pretty sure I mentioned Amazon when I filed but maybe there was confusion. I have all my Amazon paystubs in my email so I can definitely include those. Should I mail the appeal or is there a way to submit it online? The letter mentions both options but the website is so confusing to navigate.

You need to file a Combined Wage Claim since you worked in Michigan before Texas. When you moved states, your wage credits didn't automatically transfer. Call TWC and specifically request a CWC (Combined Wage Claim) so they can pull your Michigan wages into your Texas claim. This is probably why only one employer is showing up. Do this ASAP while also filing your appeal as a backup. The appeal can be filed online through your TWC account under "Appeal a Decision" or by mail/fax using the form that came with your determination letter.

•Oh wow, I had no idea about the Combined Wage Claim! The TWC website never mentioned anything about that when I applied. I'll definitely call them tomorrow about this. So even though I've been in Texas for a year, I might still need to file this special claim? Does it take longer to process than a regular claim?

GOOD LUCK GETTING THROUGH TO ANYONE AT TWC!!! I spent TWO WEEKS trying to call them about missing wages on my claim. Either busy signal or 3+ hour wait times and then getting disconnected!!! The system is COMPLETELY BROKEN!!! Even if you get through they'll probably just tell you to file an appeal and wait ANOTHER month for a hearing. They don't care that people have bills to pay!!

I had a similar issue when I moved from California. The key is filing that Combined Wage Claim that someone mentioned - it's not automatic! For anyone struggling to reach TWC by phone, I recently discovered a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to a TWC agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending days trying. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh. It was the only way I could get my wage issues fixed without waiting weeks for an appeal hearing. Just make sure you have all your documentation ready when you finally get through!

•Thanks for this tip! I just watched the video and might try this if I can't get through tomorrow. It would be worth it to get this resolved faster since I really can't wait another month for my benefits. Did they help you file the Combined Wage Claim when you got through to them?

just a quick thought but have you checked your base period? twc uses a weird system where they look at wages from like 3-15 months ago not the most recent months. so if you just started that amazon job 6 months ago it might not even count for your current claim anyway

•Good point about the base period. TWC uses the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you filed. So if OP filed in July 2025, the base period would be April 2024 through March 2025. If the Amazon job was within that timeframe, it should count toward the claim.

I had to deal with this exact situation last year! Definitely file an appeal AND call about the combined wage claim. The frustrating thing is that you have to talk to the right department. When you call (if you can get through), specifically ask for the "Interstate Claims" department. They're the ones who handle combined wage claims for people who worked in multiple states. Don't let them transfer you to regular claims processing because those agents often don't know how to handle multi-state claims properly.

•Thank you for this specific info! I didn't even know there was an Interstate Claims department. I'll definitely ask for them when I call. Did it take a long time to get your benefits after they processed your combined wage claim?

Also, make sure you keep requesting payments every two weeks even while your appeal is pending! A lot of people don't realize you still need to do this. If your appeal is successful, they'll pay you retroactively for any weeks you properly requested payments for.

•I didn't know this either! The determination letter didn't mention anything about continuing to request payments. This whole system is so confusing, especially coming from another state where things worked differently. Thank you!

•The TWC offices are a JOKE!!! I went in person TWICE and both times was told they couldn't help with my issue and I had to call the same number I'd been trying for weeks!!! Complete waste of gas and time! They're just glorified receptionists at those offices!

Just to clarify for everyone: The Combined Wage Claim (CWC) is specifically for combining wages from multiple states. If your Amazon job was in Texas, you don't need a CWC - you just need to appeal and explain that TWC is missing one of your Texas employers. If the Amazon job was in Michigan before you moved, then yes, you need to request a CWC. Either way, filing the appeal within the deadline is crucial to protect your rights while you sort this out.

•That makes more sense now. My Amazon job was actually in Michigan right before I moved to Texas, so it sounds like I definitely need the Combined Wage Claim. I'm going to file the appeal online tonight just to make the deadline and then try to call about the CWC tomorrow. Thank you for explaining this so clearly!
