Would former PA UC reps offering filing, IDme, and appeal assistance be worth paying for?
Just curious what people think - would you pay for help with your PA unemployment claim from someone who actually used to work for the system? I'm thinking about situations like complicated appeals, IDme verification issues, or filing problems that seem impossible to solve. The regular phone lines are ALWAYS busy, and my friend waited 7 weeks just to get an issue resolved. Seems like there could be value in having someone who knows the system inside out to guide you through it. What would be a fair price for something like that? Would it even be legal for former reps to help people this way?

I'd absolutely consider it depending on the cost. When my claim had that open issue last month, I spent literally HOURS trying to get through on the phone. Would've gladly paid someone who knew how to navigate the system. As long as they're not doing anything shady like promising approvals or trying to bypass legitimate requirements, I don't see why it wouldn't be legal. Former IRS employees become tax preparers all the time.

•Actually, there are already services that help you reach PA unemployment agents. I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) when I was desperate after two weeks of busy signals. They got me through to an actual UC rep in about an hour. You can see how it works in their demo video: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 But they just help with connecting - they don't offer advice or actual claim assistance. Having an ex-UC rep who could actually guide you through the process might be worth more, especially for complicated situations.

OMG I would pay SO MUCH for this!!! Been trying to file for 3 weeks and keep getting error messages. Called 27 times yesterday and nothing. Can't even get through to ask questions!

•The ENTIRE system is DESIGNED to be impossible to navigate!!! They WANT you to give up so they don't have to pay benefits!! I spent TWO MONTHS fighting an "open issue" that was THEIR mistake!!! Anyone promising they can fix this corrupt system is just looking to make a quick buck off desperate people!!!

•Thanks for the responses! I'm getting mixed signals here - some people seem desperate for help while others are skeptical. What about the ethical side? Is it weird for someone who used to work inside the system to then charge people for help navigating it?

I think the ethics really depend on what they're offering. If they're just explaining how the system works, helping fill out forms correctly, and explaining appeal processes - that seems totally fine and valuable. If they're claiming they can "pull strings" or get special treatment because they used to work there, that would be sketchy. As for pricing, maybe a tiered system would make sense? Like $25-50 for basic filing help, more for complex appeals or serious issues. I'd pay that in a heartbeat versus losing weeks of benefits because of a simple mistake.

•I had this issue with my claim last year and my cousin works for another state's unemployment and she helped me figure it out. Just having someone explain the codes and what the notices actually meant was super helpful! Not everyone has a connection like that tho

•Legal Aid is great but they're completely overwhelmed. When I tried to get help from them with my appeal last year, they had a 3-week waiting list just for the initial consultation. If you're about to miss an appeal deadline or you're months without income, waiting isn't always possible. Also, they typically only help with appeals and hearings, not with basic filing issues or IDme problems.

As someone who has been through the PA UC system multiple times, I think there's definitely a market for this service. The key would be transparency about what they can and can't do. They should be clear that they: 1. Can't guarantee approvals 2. Can't access your actual claim (they don't have system access anymore) 3. Can't speed up processing times What they COULD offer: 1. Explaining how to properly complete forms 2. Interpreting notices and claim statuses 3. Preparing for appeal hearings 4. Understanding job search requirements 5. Navigating IDme issues Those services would be valuable and completely ethical in my opinion. Many people struggle with the system not because they don't qualify, but because they don't understand the process or terminology.

•This is super helpful! I hadn't thought about the distinction between having system access vs. just knowledge of how things work. Those limitations make sense. So basically it would be like having a consultant who knows the system really well but doesn't have any special "powers" - just expertise.

am i the only 1 who thinks this is kinda wrong?? like these ppl worked for the govt and now wanna profit off the same broken system they were part of?? if they know all the secrets why didnt they make the system better when they worked there??

•EXACTLY!!! The system is INTENTIONALLY confusing and difficult!!! If these "experts" really cared, they'd be VOLUNTEERING to help people navigate the mess THEY helped create!!! Just another scheme to profit off desperate people!!!

I filed for unemployment back in January and made a small mistake on my application. Couldn't get through on the phone for weeks. Finally got my neighbor's daughter (who used to work at UC) to look at my paperwork and she immediately spotted the issue and told me how to fix it. Saved me weeks of waiting! I bought her dinner as thanks but would've paid actual money if needed. Sometimes you just need someone who knows what all those weird codes and terms mean.

•That's exactly the kind of situation I was thinking about. Glad it worked out for you! It's helpful to hear about real-world examples where this kind of expertise made a difference.

I think the bottom line is: would this service help people get benefits they're LEGALLY entitled to but might miss out on due to confusion, mistakes, or system complexity? If yes, then it seems valuable and ethical. If it's about helping people game the system or get benefits they don't qualify for, that's a hard no. Based on my experience with PA UC (three claims over the past 5 years), I think most people just need help understanding the process and avoiding simple mistakes that can cause weeks of delays. If former reps can provide that service at a reasonable price, I'd support it.

•That makes so much sense! I don't want to do anything wrong or illegal, I just want help figuring out why my claim keeps saying "pending" and nobody will answer the phone! I would definitely pay for someone to just help me understand what's happening!!
