PA UC waiting week affected by doctor's note at end of school year?

So I'm freaking out a bit about my first PA unemployment claim. My teaching contract ended June 12, 2025, but I was technically on doctor-ordered medical leave for the last few days of school (got released June 13). When filing my first weekly claim, I honestly reported this medical situation, but now I'm worried I messed up. This is my waiting week and I don't know if mentioning the doctor's note will disqualify me or cause problems with my claim.\n\nI have all the medical documentation if they need it, but now I'm second-guessing whether I should have reported it at all since I was technically still employed through June 12 anyway. Will this affect my eligibility? Has anyone dealt with medical documentation during their waiting week? I'm so confused about how to handle this correctly!

omg don't worry too much i had something similar happen last year. school year ended but i was on jury duty the last 2 days. as long as you have doc proof your fine. waiting week is just that - waiting. you dont get paid anyway so doesnt matter that much

Thanks for responding! So you think it won't affect anything beyond the waiting week? I'm mostly worried they'll put some kind of 'issue' on my account that delays everything.

You did the right thing by being honest. The doctor's note covering those final days shouldn't impact your claim negatively, especially since your contract was ending anyway. The waiting week is unpaid regardless, so there's no financial impact there. Just make sure you have your documentation ready if they request it.\n\nThings that would affect eligibility are availability for work going forward, whether you're actively seeking employment, and if you left your job for valid reasons (which contract ending is). Medical documentation from before your unemployment officially started isn't typically a problem.

This is absolutely right! My husband is a teacher and goes through this every summer with temp layoffs. As long as your contract officially ended and you're available for work NOW, you're good to go!

Two important things to understand about PA UC:\n\n1. The waiting week is unpaid regardless of your situation, so even if there's an issue with that specific week, it doesn't affect your future payments.\n\n2. Being under doctor's care only affects UC eligibility if it makes you unavailable for work DURING the weeks you're claiming benefits.\n\nSince your medical situation ended June 13 and your job ended June 12, you're just dealing with overlapping end dates. This is actually quite common with school employees. The system might flag it for review, but having your documentation ready will resolve it quickly if they ask.\n\nKeep filing your weekly claims as normal, and make sure you're completing your work search activities (applying to jobs, attending workshops, etc.) - that's what matters most going forward.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! That makes me feel a lot better. I've already started my work search activities and have been keeping track of everything. So even if they review my waiting week, it sounds like my future payments should still come through normally?

While errors can cause delays, they're usually fixable with the right documentation. Medical documentation for a period that overlapped with employment ending by just one day isn't typically grounds for denial, especially when disclosed honestly upfront.

Hey I had a similar situation but with a work injury. If you have all your paperwork, you should be fine, but actually reaching someone at PA UC is literally IMPOSSIBLE these days. I spent 3 weeks trying to get through on the phone and kept getting disconnected or busy signals.\n\nI finally found this service called Claimyr that got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes. It basically keeps calling for you until it gets through, then connects you. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 \n\nTheir website is claimyr.com if you end up needing to talk to someone. I wouldn't have bothered if my situation hadn't been complicated, but it saved me so much frustration.

I've used Claimyr too when I had an open issue on my claim. Way better than spending days trying to call myself. But OP might not need it yet - sometimes things process automatically without needing to call.

Update: Just wanted to let everyone know what happened! I checked my claim status today and everything seems to be processing normally. The waiting week shows as

That's great news! Most issues that people worry about end up resolving themselves. Glad it worked out smoothly for you.

my anxiety always gets the best of me with these things too lol. but really waiting week is waiting week, they dont pay you anyway so as long as you were honest youre good. keep up with the job search requirements thats the most important part or they will definitely deny benefits!!
