PA UC says 'no wages found' after 7 years of employment - urgent help needed
I'm trying to help my boyfriend navigate PA unemployment and we're hitting a total wall. He just got laid off after SEVEN YEARS at the same company, but when he filed for UC, the system says there are NO WAGES found under his SSN! How is that even possible? We know for a fact he's been on payroll this whole time (tax returns prove it). Then we tried going to PA CareerLink for assistance and the receptionist basically told him not to bother making an appointment because "they can't help with this kind of issue" and it would be a waste of time! I'm completely lost on what to do next. Has his employer not been reporting his wages correctly? Is this some kind of system error? How do we get this fixed so he can receive the benefits he's entitled to after working consistently for 7 years? Any advice would be deeply appreciated. We're getting desperate as bills are piling up.

This is a classic employer reporting issue. Your boyfriend needs to gather proof of employment right away - W2s for the past 18 months, recent pay stubs, and a letter from HR confirming his employment dates and wages if possible. Next, he should file an appeal immediately using the PA UC appeal form. There's a specific option for "wage investigation." In the explanation section, he should clearly state that he worked for [employer] for 7 years but the system shows no wages. Don't wait for this to resolve itself - these issues can take weeks to fix if you don't actively push for resolution.

•Thank you for the advice! We have all his W2s and pay stubs, but I didn't know about the wage investigation appeal option. Would you recommend calling UC first or just filing the appeal right away?

•Oh wow, that's concerning. I wonder if that could be our issue too? I'll have him check with HR about this. How long did it take your cousin to get it resolved?

Don't waste your time with CareerLink for this specific issue. They handle job placement services but NOT wage record problems. This is 100% a UC issue that needs to be addressed directly with the UC office. The PA UC system is COMPLETELY BROKEN and will NOT fix this automatically. You NEED to get through to an actual UC representative to resolve this. Call 1-888-313-7284 starting EXACTLY at 8:00 AM (not 8:01, not 7:59) and keep calling until you get through. When the automated system asks why you're calling, say "missing wages" very clearly. Good luck, you'll need it with this garbage system!

•I've been trying that number for WEEKS and can never get through. Always busy signals or it hangs up on me after waiting on hold. So frustrating.

•After struggling with the same problem of not being able to reach anyone at UC, I found this service called Claimyr that actually worked for me. They got me connected to a PA UC agent within about 30 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 They basically keep dialing for you until they get through, then connect you. Was totally worth it for me because this wage issue needed a real person to fix it, not the online system.

This is likely one of three issues: 1. Your boyfriend's employer has been misreporting his SSN on quarterly wage reports (most common) 2. His employer may be misclassifying him as an independent contractor rather than an employee (somewhat common) 3. The employer may not be reporting wages to PA at all (rare but serious) Here's what he needs to do in this specific order: 1. File a "Request for Wage Investigation" through his UC dashboard immediately 2. Upload PDF copies of his W2s from the past 18 months as supporting documentation 3. Continue filing weekly claims even though they'll show $0 benefit amount (this preserves his claim date) 4. Contact his employer's payroll department to verify his SSN is correct in their system 5. Request a "Wage and Separation Information" form from his employer Don't be surprised if this takes 4-6 weeks to resolve, but it CAN be fixed. These issues happen more often than you'd think.

•This is incredibly helpful, thank you! He just checked and can't find the "Request for Wage Investigation" anywhere in his dashboard. Is it under a specific section? Also, should he be contacting his old employer directly about this issue?

•The wage investigation request might be called "Monetary Determination Appeal" in some versions of the dashboard. Look under "Appeals" or "Issues and Appeals." And yes, he should absolutely contact his former employer's HR/payroll department. They may need to submit a wage correction to PA UC on their end as well.

Sorry to jump in but this reminded me of my own nightmare with PA UC last year. My problem wasn't exactly the same but also involved missing wages. The online system was USELESS for fixing it. I ended up having to get my state representative involved after 2 months of getting nowhere. Don't hesitate to contact your state rep if this drags on - they have special channels to UC and can often get things unstuck.

Make sure he's logging into the RIGHT website!!! There's the old UC system and the new one and sometimes people file on the wrong one. Double check he's on https://benefits.uc.pa.gov and not one of the older sites.

•Thanks for the suggestion! We double-checked and he's definitely on the correct site. It's showing his claim was processed but with $0 in wages for the base year. So frustrating!

One more critical thing - if your boyfriend worked for a multi-state employer, sometimes wages get reported to the wrong state. Ask him if his employer has locations in other states or if their headquarters is in another state. If so, he may need to request a combined wage claim that pulls in wages from multiple states.

•That's interesting - his company does have offices in Ohio and West Virginia as well as PA. Could that be causing the issue? How would we request a combined wage claim?

•Absolutely this could be the issue! Multi-state employers sometimes report all wages to their headquarters state. To request a combined wage claim, he needs to call UC and specifically ask for a "combined wage claim investigation." Have him mention that his employer operates in multiple states when he speaks with a representative. This could resolve the issue much faster than a standard wage investigation.
