PA UC disqualified me for 'insufficient' Career Link activities - anyone else?

Just got hit with a disqualification notice yesterday saying I didn't complete enough Career Link activities for the last 3 weeks. I'm freaking out! I've been documenting everything in my work search record - applied to 4 jobs each week through PA CareerLink plus did one virtual workshop. The notice says I needed 'qualifying activities' but doesn't explain what I did wrong. Has this happened to anyone else? I can't afford to miss these payments and I thought I was following all the rules. Can they really deny benefits for this? Do I need to appeal or just fix whatever I did wrong going forward?

I used the actual CareerLink site for everything! That's what's so frustrating - I thought I was doing it right.

There's been a recent change in how PA UC evaluates work search activities. Just applying to jobs isn't always enough - they're looking for diverse activities. Each week you need: - At least 1 job application through PA CareerLink - At least 1 activity that ISN'T just a job application (workshops, career counseling, job fairs) - Detailed documentation with specific info about each activity If you only did applications and one workshop total (not per week), that's probably why you were disqualified. You need to appeal within 15 days and provide documentation of additional activities if you have them.

Wait, so I need a workshop EVERY WEEK? The instructions weren't clear about that! I thought applying to jobs was the main requirement. This is so stressful.

They don't tell u this stuff on purpose I swear! UC is just looking for ways to deny peple. Happened to me too and I had to fight for WEEKS to get my benefits back.

LOL welcome to PA unemployment where the rules change CONSTANTLY but they never bother telling anyone!!!! I got hit with this exact thing in February. You absolutely MUST appeal within 15 days or you're screwed. The CareerLink activities have to be a MIX of different things - not just applications. It's ridiculous because most people don't know this until they get disqualified.

Did your appeal work? I'm worried they'll just deny it. Should I keep filing my weekly claims while waiting for the appeal?

I went through this exact situation last month. Here's what I recommend: 1. File an appeal immediately - you only have 15 days from the notice date 2. Continue filing your weekly claims and doing proper work search activities while appealing 3. For each week going forward, make sure you have: - At least 2 job applications - 1 different activity like workshops, resume reviews, or job fairs Most importantly, document EVERYTHING with specific details (date, time, contact person, job ID#, etc). Also, if you need to reach someone at PA UC directly to discuss your case, I recently found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes after I spent days getting busy signals. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 - saved me a ton of frustration during my appeal process.

Thank you so much for the detailed advice! I'll file the appeal today and be more careful with my activities. And I'll check out that service - I've been calling for days with no luck.

Does anyone know if they backdate the disqualification? Like do they take away benefits you already received or just stop future payments? This is making me paranoid about my own claims now...

I handle work search issues for clients all the time. The PA UC system has become much stricter about Career Link activities since January 2025. Here's what's happening: 1. Their automated system flags claims that don't show diverse work search activities 2. Disqualifications typically affect only the weeks with insufficient activities 3. Appeals have about a 60% success rate if you can show you misunderstood rather than neglected requirements The key is to demonstrate good faith effort. Document EVERYTHING going forward and attach all evidence to your appeal. And yes, absolutely continue filing weekly claims during the appeal process.

This is really helpful, thank you. I've put together all my documentation and submitted my appeal. I've also signed up for three different workshops for next week just to be safe. Fingers crossed this works out.

my friend said they r way more strict now cuz budget cuts. says they deny first and make u appeal so less people get paid. system is rigged tbh

THIS!!!! 💯 They're just trying to save money by hoping people don't appeal. Classic PA UC tactics!!

Just to clarify for everyone worried about this issue - the PA UC work search requirements have been consistent since 2023, but enforcement has gotten stricter. Here's the official requirement breakdown: - Each week, complete at least 3 work search activities - At least 1 must be a job application - The other 2 can be applications OR other qualifying activities - Other qualifying activities include: attending workshops, job fairs, taking skills assessments, creating/posting resumes, etc. If you received a disqualification, don't panic. File an appeal, continue your weekly claims, and make sure your future work search activities follow these guidelines exactly.

I went back through the UC website and you're right - the information is there, but it's buried in the FAQs. My appeal has been submitted and I've already completed 2 activities for this week. Thank you for spelling it all out!

does any1 else think its ridiculous they expect us to do all this just to get benefits WE EARNED through our jobs? careerlink workshops r mostly useless anyway & now we get punished for not doing them?? the whole system needs fixed

Just following up - has anyone heard back about your appeal yet? In my experience, these work search disqualification appeals are taking about 3-4 weeks to process currently.

Just got my determination letter yesterday - appeal approved! They're reinstating my benefits. I had to get pretty detailed with my documentation and explain that I misunderstood the requirements. Thanks to everyone here who helped me navigate this!
