PA UC direct deposit question - Do I need to update banking info yearly with Treasury?

I'm really confused about the direct deposit process with PA UC. Last year (around May 2024) I set up direct deposit for my unemployment payments. Everything was working fine until last week when I randomly got a paper check in the mail instead! Did something expire? Do we have to call Treasury every year to confirm our bank info? The instructions weren't clear when I initially set it up, and now I'm worried about future payments. Anyone else deal with this recently?

Yes, unfortunately PA Treasury requires you to revalidate your direct deposit information every 12 months. They don't send notifications when it's about to expire - the system just automatically reverts to paper checks. You'll need to call the Treasury Department at 877-869-8363 to set it up again. Have your bank account and routing numbers ready.

Ugh that's so annoying! They really should warn people before it expires. Thank you for confirming - I'll call them tomorrow morning.

Yeah me too! Got paper check after 13 months of direct deposit. Super annoying.

I've been through this EXACT nightmare 3 TIMES now! The Treasury dept and UC don't communicate with each other AT ALL. Even if you update your banking info with UC, the Treasury dept needs separate confirmation. And yes, it expires yearly with ZERO notification! What's worse is when you call that Treasury number, it's ALWAYS busy. I spent 4 days trying to get through last time.

If you're having trouble getting through to Treasury, I used Claimyr last time I needed to update my direct deposit info. It got me through to a Treasury agent in about 20 minutes instead of days of redialing. Saved my sanity honestly. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 and their website is claimyr.com. You still have to talk to Treasury yourself, it just helps you get through the phone system.

wait i thought you only needed to update direct deposit if you change banks? i've been on UC since january and haven't had any issues with direct deposit

Your 12-month reset hasn't happened yet. It's exactly 12 months from when you initially set up direct deposit with Treasury (not when your claim started). So if you set up direct deposit in January 2025, it would expire in January 2026.

Just to add some clarification here - there are actually TWO separate systems at play with PA unemployment payments. The UC system handles your claim and approves your payments, but the Treasury Department actually processes and sends the money. That's why updating info in your UC dashboard doesn't automatically update your payment method with Treasury. It's an incredibly frustrating system but that's how PA has it set up. And yes, the 12-month revalidation requirement is real. I believe it's a fraud prevention measure, but they really should send notifications before it expires.

This helps explain things - I thought updating my info in the UC portal would be enough. Is there any way to check when my direct deposit is going to expire next time so I can be prepared?

Unfortunately, there's no way to check the expiration date online. I've started putting a reminder in my calendar for 11 months after I set up direct deposit. When you call Treasury to reactivate it, you might want to ask them the exact date it will expire next time.

lol classic PA unemployment making everything 10x harder than it needs to be

IMPORTANT TIP: When you do call Treasury to update your direct deposit, SAVE THE CONFIRMATION NUMBER they give you at the end of the call. Write it down somewhere safe. If there are any issues later, having that confirmation number is the only proof you have that you completed the process. Learned this the hard way when they claimed I never updated my info even though I had!

Thanks for this tip! I definitely wouldn't have thought to save the confirmation number. I'll make sure to write it down.

Unfortunately, no. While you can do almost everything else online through the UC portal, direct deposit setup/updates with Treasury can only be done by phone. It's one of those bureaucratic disconnects that hasn't been fixed yet.

Update: I finally got through to Treasury this morning after about 45 minutes on hold. They confirmed my direct deposit had expired after exactly 12 months. Got it set up again and they said my next payment will be direct deposit. Thanks everyone for your help!
