PA UC claim stuck in review for 7 weeks - employer not contesting - normal wait time?

I'm seriously starting to worry about my PA unemployment situation. My claim has been stuck in review for 7 whole weeks now, even though my former employer isn't contesting it (I confirmed this with HR). Every week I dutifully file my weekly certification, but still nothing but 'in progress' status. My Money Network card is still empty and my savings are almost gone. Does the state really take this long to make a decision? My rent is due next week and I'm panicking. Should I keep waiting or is something wrong with my claim? What's the normal timeframe for a decision when there's no employer dispute?

7 weeks is a long time but not unheard of in PA. Mine took 5 weeks last fall. did u call them?

I've tried calling at least 20 times but can't get through - just busy signals or the automated system hangs up after saying they're experiencing high call volume. Should I just keep trying?

Seven weeks is definitely on the longer side, but PA UC has been experiencing significant backlogs lately. When you say "in review," does your dashboard specifically show "pending" or does it say "open issue"? These are different statuses that could indicate different problems. Also, have you received any correspondence in your dashboard mailbox that might indicate why there's a delay?

It says "open issue" but doesn't explain what the issue is. I've checked my dashboard mailbox every day and there's nothing there except the confirmation that I filed my initial claim. Should I be looking somewhere else for details about the open issue?

SEVEN WEEKS IS RIDICULOUS!!!! The system is BROKEN!!!! I waited 9 weeks last year and had to contact my state rep to get ANYTHING done. They don't care that people can't pay their bills!!! The whole PA UC system is designed to make people give up. Try calling your state rep's office - that's literally the ONLY thing that worked for me after WEEKS of trying to reach someone.

yep the system sucks but my state rep didn't help at all, just gave me the same number to call that never answers

I went through something similar in March. My claim got stuck with an "open issue" for 8 weeks even though my employer confirmed they weren't contesting it. The problem was I had a part-time job for 3 weeks during my base year that I didn't remember to report on my initial application. That triggered a review. What finally worked for me was using Claimyr to reach a live agent. I was skeptical at first, but after weeks of trying to call with no success, I tried it and got through to a real person within 30 minutes. They resolved my issue immediately once I explained the situation. Check out their website at claimyr.com or this video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 Might be worth trying if you're desperate like I was.

That seems like it could help! Did they tell you what the specific open issue was when you finally got through? I'm wondering if maybe I made some small mistake on my application that's holding everything up.

i had a claim stuck in open issue for like 2 months last year. turned out they needed to verify my identity but never sent me the notice to upload my documents to idme. keep filing your weekly claims tho!!! you'll get backpay when it finally processes. my claim was $4200 when it finally came through all at once

Thanks for the advice about keeping up with weekly claims. I've been doing that religiously. The identity verification thing is interesting - maybe that's my issue too. Did you have to do anything special to find out about the IDme requirement?

To answer your question - yes, when I got through to the agent, they told me exactly what the issue was. In my case, it was a discrepancy between what I reported and what was in their system from employer records. The agent was able to update it right there on the phone and my payments started processing within 48 hours, including all my back weeks. And I second what the other person said - definitely keep filing your weekly claims! As long as you're consistently certifying each week, you'll get all the back payments once your claim is approved.

This is good advice. Just to add some additional clarity: "open issue" status typically means there's a specific question about your eligibility that needs to be resolved. Common causes include: 1. Identity verification requirements 2. Separation reason verification (even if employer isn't contesting) 3. Work search documentation review 4. Wage/employment history discrepancies 5. Potential eligibility for another program that needs to be ruled out first The fastest resolution is definitely speaking with a claims examiner directly. Once resolved, back payments process quickly.

my friend had this same problem and it turned out she checked the wrong box about being able to work full time or something. easy fix once she got someone on the phone but took forever to get through!!

I found out after WEEKS of waiting that my claim was sitting there because I had checked "yes" that I was in school even though it was just a one-day professional certification class!!! The system flagged my entire claim for THAT! So frustrating! Make sure you didn't check anything unusual on your application that might have triggered a review.

Oh that's a good point! I did recently take a 2-week online course to improve my skills while job hunting. I marked that I was in training on those weeks. I wonder if that's causing the hold-up? So frustrating that such a small thing could cause such a big delay!

That could definitely be part of the issue. When you indicate you're in training or school, PA UC often puts a hold on your claim to verify that the training doesn't affect your availability for work. This is a standard review process, but unfortunately it does add time. Your best course of action is to: 1. Continue filing your weekly claims without fail 2. Contact a claims examiner directly to explain your training situation 3. Be prepared to provide details about your course (hours, schedule, purpose) 4. Ask specifically what documentation they need to resolve the open issue Once you explain that it was short-term training to improve employability (not a full degree program), they should be able to process your claim.

Update: I FINALLY got through to someone at UC today! You were right - the open issue was related to my training program AND a question about my separation from my employer. The rep said they've cleared both issues now and I should see payments starting next week, including all my back weeks! Such a relief. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!
