PA UC claim reopening issue - can't file for first 3 days after layoff in January

I'm so frustrated with the UC system right now! I was laid off on January 12th (last day of work), and I have a remaining balance on my benefit year from a previous layoff in June 2023. I spoke with a UC rep on Thursday who told me I could claim for BOTH weeks when I file on Sunday (today) - the week I was laid off plus this past week. But when I logged in this morning, the system is only letting me file for this past week! There's no option to claim for January 13th, 14th, and 15th from the first week. Has anyone dealt with this? How do I get paid for those first 3 days after my layoff? I can't afford to lose almost half a week of benefits right now.

u might have to call them agian. the online system is wierd with partial weeks

Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. I spent 3 hours on hold the first time I got through!

This is actually a common issue with reopened claims. When you reopen a claim mid-week (after being laid off on January 12th), the system often doesn't automatically give you the option to claim those partial weeks. The representative you spoke with should have filed that partial week for you while you were on the phone. You have two options: 1. Call the UC service center again and specifically ask them to file that partial week for you (they can backdate it) 2. Message them through your dashboard about the missing days, but this can take 2-3 weeks for a response Make sure to mention you were told you could file for both weeks but the system only allows for one. They should be able to manually enter those 3 days.

The same exact thing happened to me back in november!!! The tricky part is that first partial week. I ended up having to call and then they had to submit some kind of override because the system is stupid and doesn't handle partial first weeks right when reopening.

I had a similar issue last year and ended up spending THREE WEEKS trying to get through to someone at UC. It's ridiculous how hard it is to reach them, especially for something that should be simple like claiming a partial week. After constantly getting busy signals, I tried using Claimyr.com to get through - it actually worked and connected me with a UC rep in about 20 minutes. They have a demo video here: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 showing how it works. The rep was able to manually enter my partial week once I finally got through.

Is that service legit? I've seen it mentioned before but was worried it was a scam.

THE UC SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MAKE YOU GIVE UP!!!! I'm not even surprised anymore when people tell me stories like this. They make these "mistakes" all the time and hope you won't notice that they're shorting you benefits. ALWAYS call and make them fix it. They owe you that money! Don't let them get away with it!

While I understand your frustration, this isn't an intentional mistake. It's a limitation of the PA UC system that doesn't handle partial weeks well when reopening claims. The staff are generally trying to help, but they're working with outdated systems and overwhelming call volumes.

One more thing to be aware of - when you do get through to have them add those 3 days, make sure to ask if you need to complete job search activities for that partial week. In PA, you typically need to complete 2 work search activities each week you claim, but partial weeks sometimes have different requirements. Just don't want you to run into any issues with that!

That's really helpful, thank you! I did complete my 2 work search activities that week just to be safe, so I'll make sure to mention that when I call.

my cousin had this happen and they told her she had to wait till the next time she filed to get back pay for those days but then they never paid her so DEFINITELY call and keep bugging them until they fix it dont wait

Thanks for the warning - I definitely don't want to lose out on those days. Every bit helps right now.

I work as a career counselor and see this issue frequently. To clarify what others have said: 1. Partial first weeks when reopening claims often require manual processing 2. The initial 3 days you missed (Jan 13-15) need to be added by a representative 3. You'll still get paid for those days, but it requires a phone call One tip: when calling, immediately ask for a "partial week adjustment for a reopened claim" - using the right terminology can help get your issue resolved faster. Also, call as early as possible in the morning (7:30am when they open) for shorter wait times.

Thank you so much for this specific advice! I'll try calling right at 7:30 tomorrow morning and use that exact phrase.

UPDATE: I finally got through to UC this morning! I used the Claimyr service that someone suggested above and got connected in about 25 minutes instead of spending hours redialing. The rep was able to file the partial week claim for me and said I should see those 3 days of payment in 2-3 business days. She also confirmed that I did everything else correctly with reopening my claim. Thanks everyone for your help!
