PA UC Appeal Hearing Mystery - No Location Listed in Dashboard

I'm freaking out a little here. I've got an appeal hearing scheduled for this Friday (3 days away!), but when I logged into my PA UC dashboard to double-check the details, there's NO LOCATION listed anywhere. I just see the date and time. I naturally assumed it would be held at my local CareerLink office, but now I'm not sure. Do they hold these hearings anywhere else? The paperwork I received weeks ago doesn't specify a location either. Should I call the UC service center to confirm? Has anyone dealt with this before? I'm worried about showing up at the wrong place and missing my hearing entirely - I really need this appeal to go through.

Is there a phone number listed on your hearing notice? Most PA UC appeal hearings are being conducted by phone now in 2025, not in person. Check your notice carefully - it should say "telephone hearing" somewhere on it. If so, the referee will call YOU at the number they have on file at the scheduled time.

OMG I just went and looked at the notice again. It DOES say telephone hearing at the top but I completely missed it! Thank you so much. Do I need to do anything special to prepare? I've never done a phone hearing before.

To prepare for your telephone hearing: 1. Have all your documents ready and organized (pay stubs, separation notice, communications with employer, etc.) 2. Be in a quiet place where you can speak freely 3. Take notes during the hearing 4. Answer only what is asked - don't volunteer additional information 5. Speak clearly and respectfully 6. If you have witnesses, they need to be available by phone as well The referee will explain the process at the beginning. Make sure your phone is charged and you have good reception!

Thank you for these tips! I have my termination letter and some emails from my manager that I think will help my case. Should I send these to the referee beforehand or just have them ready to reference during the call?

My hearing was supposed to be a phone one too but the referee never called me and when I tried calling the number on the notice it just rang forever. Ended up getting disqualified because they said I "failed to appear" even though I was waiting by my phone for 2 hours!!! The whole system is rigged against us.

That's terrible! You should immediately file for a reopening of your case based on good cause (referee's failure to call). There's a specific form for this on the PA UC website under Appeals. You only have 15 days from the decision date to file this, so don't delay.

To answer your original question - if for some reason it IS an in-person hearing (which is rare these days), they're usually held at the UC Referee Office, NOT at CareerLink. There are UC Referee offices in most major PA cities. But as others said, it's almost certainly a phone hearing.

Any documents you want considered MUST be submitted before the hearing. Your notice should have instructions on how to submit evidence. If you haven't done this already, call the referee's office IMMEDIATELY - the deadline is usually 2-3 days before the hearing date. I had a similar situation where I couldn't reach anyone at PA UC for weeks to ask questions about my appeal. I found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual UC representative in about 20 minutes instead of spending days calling and getting busy signals. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 Worth considering if you need to talk to someone about submitting documents before your hearing date.

Thanks for this info! The notice says I should have submitted documents 5 days before the hearing date, which was... yesterday. I'm going to try calling first thing tomorrow morning. If I can't get through I might try that service you mentioned - at this point I'm desperate to make sure my appeal goes smoothly.

My appeal hearing was by phone last month and the referee was actually super nice! I was nervous but she explained everything clearly. Just make sure your phone is charged and be somewhere quiet. Mine lasted about 25 minutes.

Update: I managed to get through to someone at the Referee Office this morning. They confirmed it's a phone hearing and that they'll use the number on file. I also asked about submitting my documents late, and the person said I could email them today with "URGENT" in the subject line and my appeal number, and they'd try to get them to the referee before Friday. Fingers crossed everything works out! Thanks everyone for your help.

That's great news! Just a tip - at the beginning of the hearing, confirm with the referee that they received your documents. If they didn't, ask if you can briefly describe the content of the documents during your testimony. Good luck with your appeal!

I had an appeal last year and my employer didn't even show up for the call! Made it so much easier and I won automatically. Hope you get lucky like that!

That's not entirely accurate. You don't automatically win if the employer doesn't participate, though it does typically make things easier. The referee still needs to determine if you meet eligibility requirements based on the evidence and testimony available.
