Can I file PA UC weekly claim for husband in rehab with resea requirement? Urgent help needed!
I'm in a total panic - my husband started inpatient rehab treatment on July 23rd and will be there until August 11th. He has ZERO access to phone or internet while there, but he needs to file his weekly UC claim and mark that he's 'not available to work' during this time. Can I legally file on his behalf? And if I can, do I just need to do it once or every week he's in treatment? To make things worse, I just saw he got a RESEA appointment email and I have no idea what to do about that either! Will his benefits get cut off completely? He's the primary income and I'm freaking out about bills while he's getting the help he needs. Anyone been through something similar?

Call the UC service center ASAP. Its technically not allowed for u to file FOR him but there are exceptions for medical situations. Theyll probably tell u to get a note from the facility 2 prove hes there. My brother had similar thing when he was hospitalized.

•Thanks for responding! Do you happen to know if I need to do anything about that RESEA appointment thing? I'm worried if he misses it they'll stop his payments completely.

This is a situation where you need to contact the PA UC service center directly since it involves both medical unavailability AND a RESEA requirement. The good news is that temporary medical unavailability can be documented without losing benefits in many cases. For the RESEA appointment, you should call and explain the situation immediately - they can reschedule these appointments when there are documented medical reasons. Make sure to get documentation from the treatment facility that includes admission/discharge dates. Keep in mind you'll need to report this for each week he's unavailable, not just once.

•That's really helpful, thank you! I'll try calling them tomorrow morning first thing. Do you know if he'll need to do those work search activities for the weeks he's in treatment?

The same happened with my daughter last year! SO STRESSFUL!! Make sure you keep calling the UC office even if busy. When you finally reach someone ask them to add a note to his file about the rehab stay. They should put a medical exemption or something

Based on my experience, here's what you need to know: 1. For medical situations like rehab, your husband qualifies for a temporary medical exemption. He's still eligible for benefits but needs proper documentation. 2. The RESEA appointment is mandatory, but there's a process to reschedule due to medical reasons. This needs to be done BEFORE the appointment date. 3. You'll need to handle this situation week by week, not just once. The biggest challenge is reaching the PA UC service center. I struggled with busy signals for 3 weeks when I had a similar issue with my RESEA appointment. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through - they have a service that connects you directly to a UC representative without the constant busy signals. Saved me hours of frustration. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 Once you reach someone, explain both issues (the rehab stay and RESEA) in the same call to get everything sorted at once.

•Thank you so much for the detailed advice! I've been trying to call since posting this and haven't gotten through once. I'll check out that service - at this point I'd do anything to talk to a real person and get this figured out.

U CANNOT FILE FOR HIM!!! That's fraud and they will catch you! My cousin tried this and ended up with a overpayment of $4200!!! They check IP addresses and everything. DON'T DO IT!!!!

•This is incorrect information. PA UC policy specifically allows for assistance with filing in cases of documented medical inability. This is not fraud if properly reported and documented through official channels. The person needs to contact UC and follow their guidance, not avoid filing altogether.

dont stress to much about the resea thing. i missed mine cause i was in hospital for 3 days and they just rescheduled it. just make sure u call them and tell them whats going on. the important thing is gettin documentation from the rehab place with exact dates he's there.

Has he tried asking if the rehab facility has any accommodation for important legal/financial matters? Sometimes they will allow supervised computer access for things like this. Worth asking!

•That's a good idea - I'll call the facility tomorrow and ask if they have any way for him to handle this himself. I know they're pretty strict but maybe they have exceptions for stuff like this.

Just to follow up on my earlier comment - make sure when you talk to UC, you specifically ask about the work search requirements during medical unavailability. Typically, when someone has an approved medical exemption, they're also temporarily exempt from the work search requirements for those specific weeks. But you need to get this confirmed and documented in his case notes by a representative.

update: I finally got through to someone at UC today after calling for 3 hours straight! They told me I can submit a paper form on his behalf with a doctor's note from the rehab facility. They're also rescheduling his RESEA appointment for late August when he'll be out. Thank you all for the advice - it really helped me figure out what to do!

•That's excellent news! Make sure to get that doctor's note as detailed as possible with specific dates of treatment. And remember you'll still need to file weekly claims for each week he's in treatment (with proper documentation). Glad you got this resolved!
