Will I get unemployment benefits approved by NYS Department of Labor?
I'm really stressed about whether my unemployment claim will actually get approved. I lost my job two weeks ago when my company had layoffs and I filed right away through the NYS Department of Labor website. My claim status just says 'under review' and I haven't heard anything back yet. I keep reading horror stories online about people getting denied or stuck in adjudication for months. I worked at the same place for almost 3 years and never had any issues with attendance or performance - they just eliminated my position due to budget cuts. I'm worried there might be something I don't know about that could disqualify me. Has anyone been through this recently? What are the chances I'll actually get benefits?

The NYS Department of Labor typically approves claims for involuntary job loss pretty quickly. The 'under review' status is normal for the first 1-2 weeks while they verify your employment history with your former employer. same thing happened to me last month after my restaurant closed permanently. took about 10 days to get approved once they confirmed with my old boss that it was a layoff and not me quitting or getting fired for cause

The key thing is making sure your employer doesn't contest the claim. Most legitimate layoffs go through without issues, but if there's any dispute about the reason for separation, that's when you get stuck in adjudication hell. Since you said it was clearly budget cuts, you should be good to go.
