Where can I sign up for unemployment benefits in NY - need help with the application process
Just lost my job yesterday and I have no idea where to start with filing for unemployment. I keep seeing different websites when I search online and I'm worried about using the wrong one. Can someone tell me the official site where I can sign up for unemployment benefits? Also, do I need to wait a certain amount of time before I can apply or should I do it right away? I'm pretty stressed about this whole situation and don't want to mess anything up.

The official website is my.ny.gov - that's the only legitimate site for NYS Department of Labor unemployment applications. Don't use any other sites that might charge you fees. You should apply as soon as possible after losing your job, ideally within the first week. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates of employment.

•Thank you! Should I gather all my pay stubs before I start the application or can I estimate the amounts?

Make sure you apply right away because there's a waiting week before benefits start. When you go to my.ny.gov, look for the unemployment services section. The application is pretty straightforward but take your time filling it out accurately. Any mistakes can delay your claim and you'll end up stuck in adjudication for weeks.

•This is so true about the delays. I made one small error on my application and it took 3 weeks to get it sorted out.

I had such a hard time getting through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor when I had questions about my application. The phone lines are always busy and the automated system just hangs up on you. I ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual person. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call on my own.

•That sounds helpful but is it legit? I don't want to give my info to some random service.

•Yeah it's legitimate, they just help you get through the phone queue. You still talk directly to NYS Department of Labor staff, they just make the connection happen faster.

ugh the whole unemployment system is such a nightmare!! i applied 2 months ago and STILL haven't gotten my first payment because they keep asking for more documentation. make sure you have EVERYTHING ready before you even start the application or you'll be waiting forever like me

•What kind of documentation did they ask for? I want to make sure I have everything ready.

Just a heads up that you'll need to do weekly certifications after your initial application is approved. Don't forget about those or you won't get paid for those weeks.
