When you apply for unemployment how long does it take NYS Department of Labor to process?
Just submitted my unemployment application through my.ny.gov yesterday after getting laid off from my job at a retail store. The website said I'd get some kind of confirmation but I haven't heard anything yet. How long does it usually take for NYS Department of Labor to actually process your application and let you know if you're approved? I'm getting nervous because I need to start getting benefits soon to pay my rent. Should I be worried that I haven't heard back yet or is this normal?

The initial processing time varies but typically takes 1-2 weeks for NYS Department of Labor to make an initial determination on your claim. You should receive a Monetary Benefit Determination letter first, which shows your benefit amount if approved. Then if there are no issues, you'll get your first payment after filing your first weekly claim certification.

•Thanks! Do I need to do anything while I'm waiting or just sit tight until I hear something?

I applied about 3 weeks ago and mine went into adjudication which is taking forever. If you get selected for adjudication it can take 4-6 weeks or even longer. Really depends if they need to verify anything with your employer or if there are any red flags in your application.

•What exactly triggers adjudication? I'm worried mine might get stuck too.

•Things like quitting vs being laid off, if you worked in multiple states recently, or if your employer disputes the reason you left. Sometimes it's random though.

The NYS Department of Labor system is SO SLOW right now it's ridiculous! I've been waiting 3 weeks just to talk to someone about my claim status. The phone lines are always busy and the online chat never works.

•I had the same problem trying to reach NYS Department of Labor agents. I ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to them faster. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI. Worked for me when I needed to check on my adjudication status.

mine took about 10 days last year when i got laid off from my warehouse job, but that was before all the recent changes to the system

Just want to add that you should start filing your weekly claims right away even if your initial claim isn't approved yet. You can't get paid for weeks you don't certify, so don't wait! Log into my.ny.gov every Sunday to file your weekly claim.

•Oh wow I didn't know that! So I should start filing weekly claims this Sunday even though I just applied yesterday?

•Yes absolutely! The weekly claims are separate from your initial application. You need to file every week to establish your waiting week and be eligible for payment once approved.
