When do the next unemployment numbers come out - need to track NYS Department of Labor statistics for job search
I've been tracking unemployment rates to help with my job search strategy and wondering when the next official unemployment numbers come out? I know NYS Department of Labor releases data but I can never figure out their schedule. Are these numbers helpful for understanding the job market when you're actively looking? My weekly claims have been going fine but I want to understand if the market is getting better or worse in my area.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics releases monthly unemployment data on the first Friday of each month, usually around 8:30 AM. NYS Department of Labor typically follows with state-specific breakdowns within a few days. The data is always for the previous month though, so January numbers come out in early February.

•Thanks! So the data is always about a month behind? That makes sense why it feels like the numbers don't match what I'm seeing in my job search.

honestly i never pay attention to those numbers, they dont seem to match reality when youre actually looking for work. my weekly claims show im still unemployed but the news says unemployment is low lol

•The official numbers only count people actively receiving benefits or actively searching. Once your benefits run out, you're not counted even if you're still unemployed. That's why there's often a disconnect between official stats and what people experience.

I've been trying to call NYS Department of Labor to ask about regional unemployment data for my county but can never get through. The hold times are insane and I keep getting disconnected. Does anyone know if they publish county-level data online somewhere?

•I had the same problem trying to reach NYS Department of Labor agents for weeks. Finally found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that actually gets you through to real agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

The unemployment numbers are all manipulated anyway. They don't count people who gave up looking or people working part-time who want full-time work. The real unemployment rate is probably double what they report.

•While there are different measures of unemployment (U-3, U-6, etc.), the methodology is consistent over time, so the trends are still useful for understanding whether things are improving or getting worse, even if the absolute numbers seem low.

Same here tracking the numbers! I noticed my job search has been way harder than the unemployment rate suggests it should be. Maybe it's just my field but the competition seems fierce despite supposedly low unemployment.

•I'm seeing the same thing! What field are you in? I'm in marketing and even "entry-level" positions want 3-5 years experience. Makes me wonder if certain industries are just more saturated despite the overall low unemployment numbers. Have you noticed any particular trends in your area or field that don't match what the official stats suggest?
