What was unemployment benefits process like before - NYS Department of Labor changes over time?

I'm trying to help my mom understand the current unemployment system since she hasn't filed a claim in over 15 years. She keeps asking me what was unemployment like back then versus now with NYS Department of Labor. I know the online system is completely different now but I'm curious - what were the biggest changes? She remembers having to mail forms and wait weeks just to get a response. Is the my.ny.gov system actually better or just different? Any older folks here who can compare the old process to what we have now?

oh wow your mom is lucky she hasn't had to deal with unemployment in so long! the old system was terrible - you had to physically mail paper forms and it took forever. now at least you can file online through my.ny.gov and see your claim status immediately

That's what I told her! She's amazed you can check your weekly claim status online now instead of waiting for letters.

The transformation has been significant. Pre-2010, claimants had to mail or fax their initial applications and wait 2-3 weeks just for acknowledgment. Weekly claims were done by phone through an automated system that frequently crashed during high-volume periods. The current my.ny.gov portal allows real-time application submission, immediate claim status updates, and digital document uploads. However, some processes like adjudication still take similar timeframes - that hasn't improved much. Job search requirements are now tracked digitally instead of through paper logs, which is more convenient but also more strictly monitored.

Wait so adjudication still takes forever even with the new system? I thought technology was supposed to make everything faster

Unfortunately yes - adjudication involves human review of complex eligibility issues, so automation hasn't reduced those timelines significantly. The technology helps with data collection and initial processing, but final determinations still require manual review by NYS Department of Labor staff.

I filed for unemployment back in 2008 during the recession and it was absolutely horrible. You'd call the phone line and get busy signals for HOURS. When you finally got through, the automated system would crash halfway through your weekly claim. At least now with online filing you don't have to deal with that phone tree nightmare every week.

OMG that sounds awful! My mom mentioned something about busy phone lines but I didn't realize it was that bad.

The biggest improvement is definitely the transparency. Before, you'd submit paperwork and have no idea what was happening with your claim. You'd just wait and hope. Now you can log into my.ny.gov and see exactly where your claim stands - whether it's pending, in adjudication, or approved. The job search tracking is also much better integrated. Instead of keeping paper logs that you'd mail in, everything syncs digitally with the Workforce One system.

yeah the job search thing is so much easier now, you just log your activities online instead of writing everything down

Sure the online system is more convenient but it's created new problems too. Now if there's ANY technical glitch with my.ny.gov you're completely stuck. At least with the old paper system if you mailed something you had proof it was sent. These days the website crashes during peak times and then you miss filing deadlines through no fault of your own. Plus they expect everyone to be tech-savvy which isn't fair to older workers.

That's actually a good point about older workers. My mom is pretty computer literate but I know some people her age really struggle with online systems.

If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor agents to explain the system differences to your mom, there's actually a service called Claimyr that can help get you connected to speak with someone directly. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Sometimes talking to an actual person is the best way to get these kinds of historical questions answered, especially when you're trying to help someone understand the changes.

Thanks! I'll check that out. It would be great if she could talk to someone who could walk her through the current process.
